Frustration 2.0

2nd November 2023

Another Blank...

Another grim day on the river. "Wetter than an otters pocket" is an apt phrase.

The fish that we had in the beat have either moved on, or were keeping their heads down.

On the upside, the river is rising again!

Sighs.

2nd November 2023

After rising to 3' 9" last night, the river has dropped to 2' 9" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 6°C (43°F) and Water Temp is 8°C (46°F)

Drizzle this morning with an upstream breeze.

We are hoping that the heavy rain from Storm Ciaran stays to the East of us and doesn't cause a big rise in the river.

1st November 2023

Nothing Today...

A challenging day, weather wise and tales of woe again for Cecil D in the Bridge Pool.

Cecil hooked his fish and everything seemed to be going to plan until the fish decided to move into the fast water and managed to get around some rocks. This resulted in the poly tip of Cecil's line snapping due to abrasion on the rock.

If it wasn't for bad luck, Cecil would have no luck at all.

The river is rising and was 3' on the gauge at close of play.

We now brace ourselves for the arrival of Storm Ciaran. Great.

Steve had mop the hut after lunch because of the water from everyone's kit.

Nothing for the catch book but we have seen more travelling fish.

Nothing today...

Other than the odd plucks and takes, a dry net for Steve.

We have seen hundreds of fish running the beat today, after the last few years it has been a sight to behold.

The conditions over the past few weeks have been in favour of the fish.

The river had dropped to 4' 2" but has risen back to 4' 8" at close of play.

What we would give for the river to be 1' 4" on the gauge.

3rd November 2022

2 Today...

Cecil D was top rod again today. Cecil landed a 7lber and lost a couple of others in the Bridge Pool.

Cecil's second fish is the biggest he has ever caught.

Just as the light was starting to go, Cecil hooked his fish in the top of the Clure.

The fish ran down through the Clure and into the Gooselandale, Cecil had to clamber out of the river in the Clure, go through a gate and along the riverbank into the Gooselandale.

His fish then decided it wasn't happy in the Gooselandale and ran further downstream, over the weir and into the Cauld Hole. All the while Cecil following along on the riverbank.

The fish then decided it wasn't happy in the Cauld Hole, so made its way into the runners, where finally Cecil was able to land it.

Cecil's fish measured 44" in length and had a girth of 21"

After consulting the Tweed Foundation length to weight chart and much deliberation between Steve and Cecil, the fish was given an estimated weight of just over 33 pounds.

Well Done Cecil.

The river has now dropped back to 4' 3" at close of play.

Clear blue skies with no wind this morning.

A delayed start this morning until the river condition improves and thankfully, no more forecast.

2nd November 2022

3 Today and a Sea-Trout...

In what can only be described as foul conditions with heavy rain, galeforce winds and leaves by the waggon load. The river looked more like the North Sea.

The team did however manage to land fish.

Cecil D was top rod in terms of numbers. Cecil landed a 18lber in the Bishops and a 5lbs Sea-Trout in the Cauld Hole.

Heaviest fish goes to Derek S who after a long battle in the Cauld Hole, landed our biggest fish of the season, measuring just over 41" and weighed at 28lbs.

Our last fish was landed by Eric R, who is recovering from a recent hip replacement and landed a 16lber in the Clure.

15th November 2021

Due to us having no rods on the river due to illness and Steve has a bout of the flu, there will be no updates until Wednesday morning.

I would have been on the beat, but the DVLA, going against all of the advice of my doctors, have revoked my driving license.

I have managed to get an appointment with the Pope, but I still can't get anyone at the DVLA to answer the telephone.

When life gives you Lemons, add Vodka...

It all went a bit pear shaped after a quiet morning session.

The brisk downstream wind changed to a fully blown hoolie, so strong it was lifting our anglers lines from the river.

The wind brought the autumn curse, leaves!!! So many it was snowing leaves.

The final nail in the coffin, torrential rain. Heavy enough for our anglers to call Steve on the radio for collection in the Mule, so they could retreat to the hut.

The river is on the rise again.

7th November 2020

Our Last Fish...

Well Done to Gary K who landed a 18lber in the Bishops.

We have have taken to difficult decision to make this our last day of the season.

The remainder of our booked rods are all living in England ,which meant they are unable to travel to Scotland due to the lockdown rules. This along with some other factors made us come the decision to close our season early.

Thank you to all the rods that have chosen to roll over their fishing until next season. Those rods that were unable to commit to next season have been given a full refund.

After having the best September and October on record it was with a degree of sadness when we locked up tonight but one thing is for sure, we will back next season, better and stronger.

An end of season report will be posted shortly.

Tight Lines to everyone still managing a cast.

20th November 2019

That's All Folks...

As Steve hangs up his landing net and Sandra puts the soup pot away, we finished our season with a blank.

Other than a couple of brief offers and the odd pluck and pull, nothing for the catch book today.

We finish with 47 Salmon and 14 Sea-Trout.

Not a great score but it is a very much improved outlook.

We have have seen a lot more fish this season compared to the previous 3 seasons and it is easy to say, more like night and day compared to last season.

This season the water levels have been in the favour of the fish and we have had plenty of fish in the beat, but reduced numbers of anglers fishing for them.

A full review in December.

Frozen...

With the temperature not going above freezing all day, the warmth of the hut outweighed the thoughts of standing in cold water and having to de-ice the rod rings every cast.

It is forecast to be slightly warmer tomorrow, for our last day of the season.

A Sea-Trout...

A small but perfectly formed 3lbs Sea-Trout for Paul L today, from the Clure.

Time will tell.

4 Today...

Like yesterday, first out of the blocks was David T with a 5lber from the Clure this morning.

Eric R also added to Steve's catch book this morning with a 8lber from the Bridge Pool.

The weather has been a bit on the manky side this morning so the team were grateful for the warm fire and one of Sandra's bowls of soup.

This afternoon is was Patrick W taking all the glory landing 2, a 14lber and a 8lber in the Bridge Pool.

David T lost 2 fish in the Bridge Pool this afternoon, his excuse was he left them for Patrick !!!

A nice 13lber today for yours truly from the Bridge Pool.

John W landed a cracking 4lbs Sea-Trout from the Bishops and Cecil D landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout in the Bridge Pool.

A season with very few fish around, so much so that we still don't have any resident fish.

The water colour has improved but tomorrows forecast is for a lot of rain coming in from the West.

Double Sigh!!!

9th November 2018

A Sea-Trout...

A challenging day with an upstream Hoolie blowing in your face but we avoided the blank with Diccon J landing a 2lbs Sea-Trout in the Clure.

It has starting raining (17:30) and we are forecast a lot of rain overnight.

Steve has been singing the praises of our team of anglers who stuck it out and fished on until the end in the poor weather conditions.

Richard B lost what has been described as a very big fish in the Clure. Richard had it on for 20 minutes and then ping!!!

6 fish hooked for our team but only one landed.

I think Steve wants a wig for Christmas as he has pulled all of his hair out.

Back up to the beat today and another day of frustration with our team losing fish.

Brian W lost a fish in the Bishops.

Brian W.

Paul L also lost a fish in the Bishops.

Fish on for Paul L, but not for long...

If you are reading this Matt C, I think in need a new set of front teeth!!!

13th November 2017

Tales of Woe...

2 fish lost today.

A very large fish led Brian W a merry dance in the Clure, before throwing the hook and Paul L also lost a fish in the Bishops.

The air has been two shades of Blue, one with the temperature and the other other with the expletives used after dropping the fish!!!

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge.

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge.

Air temp is -1C (30F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

A hard frost this morning and the strong NW wind has dropped away.

10th November 2017

One for the Ghillie...

As we are now down to 3 rods, Steve had a cast in the Weavers and landed a 9lber.

I still say if Steve fell in a muddy puddle, He'd come out with a Salmon!!!

Simon C also lost a fish in the Lower Runners.

Still lots of fish moving through.

10th November 2017

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) and falling.

Air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 7C (45F)

Well done to Simon C today, Simon landed a 10lber in the Bishop's

Simon C.

Arnold S also had an offer in the Island Pool.

Arnold S.

We are still seeing plenty of fish moving through as the river was slowly rising, getting them to play is a different matter.

John B lost a fish in the Lower Runners whilst our other rods had some brief encounters that sadly came to nothing.

8th November 2017

The river has fallen back to 1' 11" (58cm).

Air temp is -1C (30F) and water temp is 6C (43F).

A cold, bright and frosty morning.

7th November 2017

A Wash Out...

I headed back up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and during the drive up I rang Steve to see how things were going.

His response wasn't what I wanted to hear, " it's rising rapidly. "

I crossed the Teviot and it was running clear, but the Tweed was a different story and was carrying colour.

I arrived when the team were having lunch and everyone was keeping an eye on the height gauge.

The team were keen to keep trying and went back out after lunch.

Top rod yesterday Lewis T.

Graham B and John B putting the world to rights.

The river continued to rise and was becoming more and more coloured, large logs and branches were coming down stream and it got to a point where you were hooking leaves every cast and our rods called it quits.

A rapid rise.

The river peaked at 4' 2" (1.21m) and as we locked up the river was beginning to fall.

With a cold night forecast we are expecting a good drop in the river level, but more important for us is an improvement in the water clarity.

7th November 2017

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) and rising.

Air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Graham also lost a fish in the Island Pool after his polyleader loop burst open.

6th November 2017

The river is 1' 2" on the gauge.

Air temp is -2C (28F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

Ed the Dig takes all the glory again today landing all of our fish.

Ed the Dig in action.

Nothing for the book today.

Double Sigh....

2nd November 2017

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge after a small rise last night.

Air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

1st November 2017

A Sea-Trout...

David S added another fish to his account, a 6lbs Sea-Trout from the Weaver.

Both Steve and I are disappointed for our team over their 3 days as we have no shortage of fish in the beat, but we can't tempt them.

A new team tomorrow...

1st November 2017

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) and steady on the gauge.

Air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

30th November 2016

That's All Folks...

A blank but enjoyable last day of the season where a very strong downstream wind certainly blew away the cobwebs.

I've yet to do a full recount, but it looks like 71 Salmon and 12 Sea-Trout which at the moment means we are the top beat on Upper Tweed and have even caught more than some of the lower prime beats.

A full end of season report in December.

30th November 2016

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

The final push...

29th November 2016

One for the Ghillie...

Steve saved us from a blank with a 25 lber in the Cauld Hole.

Cecil D lost 3 today, due to big fish snapping his hook on one occasion and another bending the hook open.

Cecil needs two new front teeth after the expletives!!!

A lot of fish moving upstream today and some serious lumps among them.

29th November 2016

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

28th November 2016

1 Today...

One for the book today with Gerald G opening his account after a 30 minute tussle with a 28 lber in the Cauld Hole. Gerald also lost another 2.

Close but no cigar for Cecil D who also lost a fish in the Cauld Hole. Cecil had just flicked his fly into the water and was stripping line from his reel ready to cast when he realised his line was shooting upstream, he tightened in and up the fish came and spat out the fly.

Cheeky bugger.

We have also seen good numbers of fish travelling upstream today.

28th November 2016

The river is 1' 9" (53cm) on the gauge,air temp is 0C (32F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

26th November 2016

4 Today...

Top rod today in terms of numbers is Ed "The Dig" M with 3 fish, 2 from the Cauld Hole weighing 15 and 21 lbs. His third weighing 18 lbs from the Bridge Pool.

Top honours for the heaviest fish goes to Roger C with a 30 lber from the bottom of the Cauld Hole which he landed in the Weavers.

An eventful day for Roger as he then spent a couple of hours in A&E with a hook well and truly stuck in his finger.

26th November 2016

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge, air temp is -2C (28F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

25th November 2016

Nothing today...

Another bitterly cold day on the river and we managed to lose another 3 fish. Ed M losing 2 and Scott L losing another.

The river is still holding a 1' 10" and we could do with another 6" off it.

25th November 2016

The river is 1' 10" (56cm) on the gauge, air temp is -5C (23F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

24th November 2016

Shaking hands...

With the river back at an awkward height for us and a delayed start due to the sub zero temperatures which caused the rod rings to ice up, nothing for the catch book today.

Scott L did manage a brief handshake in the Gooselandale, which he later discovered was due to his hook being tangled up on his intruder style fly.

Likewise Ed M had a brief handshake in The Weavers but nothing stuck.

Hopefully another cold night will shrink the river back to a better level for tomorrow.

24th November 2016

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge, air temp is -5C (23F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

23rd November 2016

2 today...

Old Jimmy M strikes again with a 14 lber in the Bridge Pool and our second fish, a 8 lber for Frank C in the Cauld hole.

23rd November 2016

The river is 3' 4" (1.01m) and falling, air temp is -3C (27F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

Another hard frost this morning, the river is still carrying some colour but it is clear at the sides.

22nd November 2016

A wash out...

The river continued to rise and peaked at the 5' (1.52m) mark and remained dirty.

It will also be the first test for the Bridge Pool riverbank.

Hopefully it will be fishable tomorrow.

22nd November 2016

The river is 4' 6" (1.37m) rising and very dirty, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

Yuck!!!

21st November 2016

Seven today, plus a Sea-Trout...

A good day for the catch book today, Scott H claiming top rod with 3 fish. Scott landed a 22 lber and a 20 lber in the Lower Runners along with a 8 lber in the Cauld Hole.

Steve landed 2 fish weighing 15 and 12 lbs in The Weaver.

Old Jimmy M landed a 26 lber in the Lower Runners and claimed the sweep for the heaviest fish.

Tom W landed a 12lber in the Cauld Hole and Scott W landed a 7 lbs Sea-Trout in The Clure.

All returned, well done men.

21st November 2016

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge, air temp is -5C (23F) and water temp is 2C (36F)

A blanket of frost this morning, picture postcard stuff. Steve and his team are having a delayed start to allow the temperatures to rise up.

19th November 2016

Another blank...

Nothing today and the fish were very thin on the ground. David D did get a pull in the Gooselandale, but nothing came of it.

The river is dropping slowly and should be a perfect height for Monday.

19th November 2016

The river is 1' 8" (51cm) on the gauge, air temp is 2C (36F) and water temp is 5C (41F).

18th November 2016

Nothing today...

Back up visiting our team of 4 rods today and the river was holding at 2' (61cm) on the gauge. This is an awkward height for us as it allows the fish to run through without having to pause.

It was also very much on the chilly side and when I arrived our team were enjoying warming bowls of Sandra's soup and the feel of a hot fire in the hut.

Snow on them there hills.

It was that toasty Steve had to force the team back out onto the river after lunch.

Stan M in Shaws.

Mark C in the Bridge Pool.

Other than John W losing a fish in the Bridge Pool, a blank day.

18th November 2016

The river is 2' (61cm) on the gauge, steady and running clear. Air temp is 1C (34F) and water temp is 7C (45F)

17th November 2016

4 Today and a Sea-Trout...

I've got to admit, after speaking with Steve this morning for the river report, I thought we were buggered.

But what do I know....

Steve got our rods out to fish the sides and slack water with big bright flies.

John W had a great start landing 3 fish and losing another 2. John landed a 11 lber and a 9 lber in the Gooselandale, later on he landed a 8 lber in the Bridge Pool.

David D landed a 16 lber in the Bridge and also lost another in the Gooselandale.

As we only have 4 rods again, Steve had a cast and landed a 4 lbs Sea-Trout in Shaws.

It's good to see our high water pool, the Gooselandale producing fish for the first time this season.

That's the beauty of Caberston, we have pools for all different levels of water.

17th November 2016

The river is 3' 1" (94cm) on the gauge, dirty and rising. Air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

Just what we didn't want.

16th November 2016

One of one and two of another...

A grim day weather wise today with some torrential showers being carried on very strong winds that had our rods taking shelter in the hut.

We did add more fish to the catch book, John N landing 3 fish. A 12 lbs Salmon and 2 Sea-Trout weighing 4 and 5 lbs, all in the Bridge Pool

We are expecting a rise in water tonight after all of the rain.

Fingers crossed not too much.

16th November 2016

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

It is blowing a downstream hooley which will make casting a challenge and it will also put a lot of leaves in the river.

Oh Joy!!!

15th November 2016

3 and 1...

I travelled back up to the beat today to visit our team of 4 rods and I was greeted with good news.

Our team were growing increasingly frustrated with the number of fish both in the beat and running through and as we only have 4 rods fishing Steve decided to "bear arms."

Brian W

I wasn't long before Steve had a 5lber and a 3 lber out of The Weaver and a 4 lbs Sea-Trout out of the Bridge Pool.

Paul L

Not to be outdone Paul L then proceeded to land a 15 lber from The Weaver.

15th November 2016

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

Bizarre temperatures for November.

14th November 2016

Another blank...

Frustration isn't even close. Lots of fish either sploshing around or running through but not even a pull, the fish at the moment are just not interested.

Also the big shift in air and water temperatures from cold to unseasonably warm is not helping matters.

14th November 2016

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge, air temp is 13C (55F) and water temp is

8C (46F)

12th November 2016

Blankety Blank...

The conditions proved our undoing today. The river peaked at 2' 3" (69cm) but was very dirty.

On the up side, a lot of fish have been seen on the move and sploshing around including some fresh ones.

Looking forward to Monday.

12th November 2016

The river is 2' (61cm) on the gauge, coloured and rising, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 7C (45F).

11th November 2016

Not even a pull...

Up on the beat again today to visit our rods and the moment you stepped out the car you felt the cold.

David D wrapped up in the Weaver.

With the water temperatures on the low side it is always a challenge to get an offer and you need to get your fly down to the fish.

Graham B in The Bridge Pool

I think Steve will have our rods fishing hard tomorrow as looking at the catch returns, fish have been caught above and below us.

11th November 2016

The river is 7" (18cm) on the gauge, air temp is 0C (32F) and water temp is 3C (37F)

A hard frost this morning with clear blue skies.

10th November 2016

5 lost...

What a day, 5 different rods lost a fish each today so Steve has offered new hooks and sharpening stones!!!

On the up side we have saw a lot more fish today and Graham B reported a pod of fresh grilse bombing through the Bridge Pool.

10th November 2016

The river is 7" (18cm) on the gauge, air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

A new team today.

9th November 2016

Oh dear...

Close but no cigar today for Andrew B, who lost a fish just as he was getting ready to net it in the Weaver.

If it wasn't cold enough, the air was turned even more blue.

Another blank day.

9th November 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 1C (34F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

We have rain, sleet and snow coming down at the moment, the surrounding hills are covered in snow.

We are expecting a rise of water today.

8th November 2016

Another blank...

Back up on the beat again today and winter is certainly tightening its grip, reaching a daytime high of 4C (39F)

The fish are no where near as visual as last week and this may be due to the cooler water temperatures.

Andrew B in The Clure

Another blank day for our 2 rods as the low, cold and crystal clear water makes things a challenge. Snow, sleet and rain is forecast tonight so we will wait and see if we get a rise of water and hopefully a change of fortunes.

8th November 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 0C (32F) and water temp 4C (39F)

7th November 2016

Nothing today...

A blank day for our 2 rods, not even so much as a take.

Grrrrrrr.

7th November 2016

The river is 7" (18cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 4C (39F)

5th November 2016

Rubber hooks...

Nothing to report other than tales of woe, Ed M lost fish in The Island Pool, Bishop's and The Weaver and Graham M lost a fish in the Bishop's

Ah well, you win some, you lose some.

5th November 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 5C (41F).

Cloudy with a brisk NNE wind.

4th November 2016

3 Today...

Back up on the beat to visit our rods today and it was noticeably colder than my earlier in the week visit.

Apparently the team were a bit fuzzy this morning after copious amounts of whiskey and G&T's were consumed last night.

Steve told me that the fish seemed to be keeping their heads down today but that hadn't stopped Neil S landing a 9 lber in The Weaver just before lunch and Ed M losing a fish in The Bishop's.

After lunch the weather turned wet and cold and we could see signs the river was rising, more leaves were coming down and the river was starting to carry a tinge of colour.

Ken F in "Stealth Mode"

That didn't have an effect on the fishing as yesterdays top rod Ed M landed a 6 lber in The Clure and lost another 2.

The Dig

Eric Le R also added to his score with a 9lber in The Bridge Pool.

Steve made a noteworthy point, so far this week we have caught the same amount of salmon as we caught during all of last season!!!

4th November 2016

The river remains at 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

Looks like a day of blue skies.

3rd November 2016

What a difference a day makes...

It's as if someone flicked a switch, maybe the temperature change, all I do know is we've had a great day.

Ed the Dig leading the way with 5 salmon, Ed had a 8, 12 and 13 lber from The Clure, a 26 lber from the Island Pool and a big 32 lber from The Bishop's.

Ed also lost a fish in the Bridge Pool, but we won't hold that against him.

Michael R also got on the scoresheet today with 2 salmon, a 15 lber in The Clure and a 8 lber in The Weaver.

Tales of woe for Eric Le R and Neil S.

Eric lost a fish in The Bishop's and also lost what he describes as a "pig of the deep" in the top of The Weaver, the fish after being on for a while decided to turn downstream and off it went and all Eric could do was watch the line, then the backing disappear from his reel and around the corner at the rugby club gate and the rest is history.

Neil lost his fish in the top of The Bishop's and turned the air blue.

7 for Steve's book and 4 lost.

3rd November 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 5C (41F)

Cloudy and overcast this morning with a strengthening NW breeze and rain is forecast.

2nd November 2016

Nothing today...

The fish simply didn't want to know today, we saw plenty of fish on the move but not so much as a take.

A new team tomorrow.

2nd November 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

Looks like another bright and chilly day.

1st November 2016

3 of one and one of the other...

Back up on the beat today to visit our team of rods and once again we were blighted with clear low water and bright sunshine from an almost cloudless sky.

However we did manage to put some fish in Steve's catch book.

Eric Le R, fishing Caberston for the first time landed 2 Salmon this morning, a 16 lber and a 14lber, both from The Clure.

John E, an old hand at Caberston, also had a couple of fish, a 11 lber in The Clure, and a very plump 12 lbs Sea- Trout from The Bishop's.

Well done men.

1st November 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

30th November 2015

That's all folks...

Well as par for the course this season nothing for the book on the last day of the season.

Our end of season report will be posted next week.

As some of you are aware I was elected as a proprietor commissioner to the River Tweed Commission this year and we have a meeting on the 7th December and I would like to see if they have any insight as to what has went fundamentally wrong this season.

30th November 2015

The river is 4' 5" (1m 35cm) and gravy coloured, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

28th November 2015

Another blank...

Our team fished hard until the very end and in some horrendous wind and rain, all for no reward.

One more day of fishing on Monday and I can tell you 2 people who will be very pleased to see the end of the 2015 season.

Til Monday.

28th November 2015

The river is 2' 6" (76cm) on the gauge and is slightly coloured, Air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

27th November 2015

Wet and Windy...

Nothing today for our team, it has been blowing a downstream hooley all day then with it came very heavy rain.

The river is rising and is 2' 2" (66cm) and turning dirty. (16:30)

27th November 2015

The river is 1' 8" (51cm) on the gauge, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

We have a strengthening downstream wind and looking at the forecast, we have heavy rain forecast. Just as the river is approaching a perfect height for us, more water!!!

Par for the course this season (sigh).

26th November 2015

Nothing today...

Other than a brief handshake from a fish in The Cauld Hole for Cecil D, nothing for the book today.

It is encouraging that we have seen small pods of fish running the beat.

26th November 2015

The river is 1' 9" (53cm) and falling, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

25th November 2015

Another blank...

Nothing for the book again today and we barely saw a fish all day.

Where are the fish ????

25th November 2015

The river is 2' (61cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

24th November 2015

Nothing today...

A very quiet day on the river today, we didn't even see fish moving until this afternoon and we really need a good 1' of the gauge as these water heights are historically known as very poor for us.

The river has dropped back to 2' 3" (67cm)

24th November 2015

The river is 2' 6" (76cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

23rd November 2015

2 today...

Ed M was top rod today landing both our fish, Ed landed a 15lber in The Clure this morning and then landed a 20lber this afternoon in The Bridge Pool.

Also worth mentioning is that Ed had 4 Grayling, he was definitely in the zone.

The river has remained steady at 2' 3" (67cm) today.

23rd November 2015

21st November 2015

At last !!!!

We have finally added a fish to the book, Andy R landed a 6lber in the Bridge Pool, Andy landed another fish in the Bridge Pool but discovered it was hooked in the pectoral fin so a no counter.

John E and William E both practised long distance catch and release, John losing a fish in The Gooselandale and William losing his in The Bishops.

It's good to be able to enter a fish in the book after losing a good few lately, so good in fact Steve has smiled or it could be wind!!!

21st November 2015

The river is 3' 2" (97cm) on the gauge, air temp is -1C (30F) and water temp is 7C (45F)

We have a covering of snow this morning.

20th November 2015

2 Lost...

Back up to the beat today and the forecasters had once again got the weather right with some heavy showers moving through and it was noticeably colder today.

Everyone was pleased to see the glowing fire in the Bothy and during lunch some of our team reported seeing fish whilst others hadn't seen a thing all morning.

After being warmed outside by the fire and inside by Sandra's soup, our team were back out on the river.

Derek C in The Clure

Once again it was tales of woe, Jeff S lost not one but two fish in the Gooselandale this afternoon. Gary T did manage to get a fish on the bank, a Grayling that gave a good account of itself using its large fins to good effect in the strong flow.

Gary T with a Grayling in The Bishop's

The river was showing signs of rising when I left and this was later confirmed with Steve as he told me the river was up to 3' 10" (1m 17cm) this evening.

It was also apparent that our first taste of winter was on its way as the gritters were out in force during the drive home, hopefully this will lower the water temperatures to slow the fish up.

20th November 2015

The river is 3' 6" (1m 7cm) and holding steady, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

19th November 2015

3 Lost...

A day of rubber hooks, Jeff S lost a fish in the Upper Runners, William E lost a fish in the Gooselandale and John E lost a fish at the Bus Stop.

It's got to a point where The Samaritans won't even talk to Steve!!!

On the bright side the river is dropping and is 3' 11" (1m 19cm)

19th November 2015

The river is 4' 6" (1m 37cm) and falling after rising to 6' 6" (1m 98cm) last night.

Air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

We also have a very strong downstream wind.

18th November 2015

Up she comes again...

We have had torrential rain showers today, the team came in for lunch like "drowned rats"!!!

Then this afternoon the river began to rise rapidly and turned dirty chocolate brown, the river is currently over the 5' (1m 52cm) mark.

Words escape me.....

18th November 2015

The river is 3' 9" (1m 14cm) and rising, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

17th November 2015

Nothing today...

Back up on the beat today to visit our rods and it is nice to see them fishing after being washed off yesterday.

Storm Barney had yet to make his presence felt when I arrived and after cutting the pitch of the rugby club I joined our team for lunch in the Bothy.

The eagle eyed readers might spot a tin of salmon on the table, Stan M's contribution as the only salmon he is likely to get!!!

As we finished lunch the heavy rain arrived but this wasn't dampening the spirits of the team with Stan M and Mark C first out of the blocks and heading down to the Bridge Pool.

The rain got heavier and David D joked across the river "just what we need, more water"!!!

John W fishing The Gooselandale spotted small pods of very fresh fish crossing the weir and quickly came back down to the Bothy to change tactics but all to no avail for him and the rest of our rods but it is encouraging seeing fresh fish in the river.

When I left for home the river had slowly dropped back to 3' 6" (1m 5cm) but and this season there is always a but, the gauges this evening are now rising again with the heavy rainfall.

"Sigh"

17th November 2015

The river is 3' 9" (1m 14cm) and falling, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

The river is carrying a slight tinge of colour but is fishable.

Yes, back in the game !!!

16th November 2015

Washed off...

The river conditions didn't improve and continued to rise up to 6' 1" (1m 85cm) before dropping back to 5' 9" (1m 75cm).

The river however is very coloured and out team waited in the Bothy till after lunch to see if there was any improvement but no change.

Steve is expecting the river to be fishable tomorrow.

16th November 2015

The river is 5' 10" (1m78cm) coloured and rising. The river was off the gauge yesterday and flowing through the carpark. Air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

From no water to too bloody much !!!

14th November 2015

Lost 2...

Our "good run" continues, John N lost a fish in the Gooselandale, his fish was heading downstream towards the weir and whilst trying to apply pressure to stop it, the hook came out!!!

David S also lost a fish in The Bridge Pool, David's fish being hooked beside the burn decided to turn downstream and after stripping nearly 100 yards of line of the reel it slipped the hook!!!

I'm off to sit in a darkened room and suck my thumb whilst rocking backwards and forwards, the asylum awaits!!!

14th November 2015

The river is 3' 8" (1m 12cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

13th November 2015

Unlucky for some...

Back up on the beat today and the weather had changed to what we consider normal, sheets of sleet and snow carried on a strong downstream gale, the only thing being after having weeks of mild weather you don't 'arf feel it.

The two shovelfuls of coal I put on the fire were well received by our team as they returned to the Bothy for lunch, why is it when you start to walk back, a big squall of weather hits, it's not much fun walking upstream into a downstream wind that is battering you with sleet and snow.

I can't decide if it's a good or bad thing having a roaring fire and hot bowls of soup as sometimes it makes it a struggle to leave the cosy shelter and head back out to the river, especially as the snow was now starting to dust the hill tops.

But head out they did and when I got back in the office and rang Steve for the report, once again it was tales of woe.

Brian W hooked into a large cock fish in Shaws and after fifteen minutes of tug of war with the fish coming close to the bank and then powering away time and time again, the fish was just to powerful and after another run it slipped the hook.

Well it is Friday the 13th.........

13th November 2015

The river is 2' 2" (66cm) and falling after rising last night, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Steve's forecast.........."Batten down the Hatches" !!!

12th November 2015

And another blank...

I'm starting to feel like Les Dawson with all these Blankety Blanks!!!

We saw very few fish today, the ones we did see were running hard and not interested.

The forecasters got it right and Abigail is making her presence felt, giving us a howling downstream gale and very heavy rain.

Steve is expecting a big river tomorrow........BUGGER!!!

12th November 2015

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

The weather forecast for this afternoon ain't pretty. Hang on to your hats!!!

11 November 2015

Another blank...

Another tough day for Steve and our rods, we saw plenty of fish, but they are running hard and not interested in any of our teams offerings.

It's worth noting that before packing in our rods are reporting very fresh fish coming into the Bridge Pool.

A new team tomorrow, will it come good for them???

11th November 2015

The river is 3' (91cm) and falling on the gauge, after rising back up last night. Air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

The downstream wind has dropped to a more manageable level.

10th November 2015

Nothing today...

I was back up on the beat today and when I dropped down the hill at Clovenfords and saw the river, it was an Oh No moment, the river was a dirty brown colour and as I drove along the A72 running parallel with the river it was very much same until about a mile east of Walkerburn it didn't look as bad.

As I arrived at the gate I was expecting all our rods to be in the Bothy, how wrong was I, they were all out fishing, the river although coloured was fishable, particularly at the sides which is just where we would expect the fish to be in this height of water.

The river had dropped a couple of inches from this mornings report and there was plenty of flotsam and jetsam coming down the river.

The weather is certainly all to pot this season, it was so mild for the time of year, yes it was blustery in the wind but you certainly couldn't say it was cold. The downstream wind was making casting challenging and was rattling through bands of light rain, normally at this time of year bands of sleet would have been the norm.

When I left this afternoon the river had dropped to just under the 3' 6" (1m 7cm) and when I spoke to Steve this evening it was continuing to drop.

Hopefully we will get a fish tomorrow as I fear "dry rot" is setting in on Steve's net!!!

10th November 2015

After rising to 4' 4" (1m 32cm) yesterday the river is 3' 10" (1m 17cm) and dropping this morning, air temp is a balmy 16C (61F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

We still have the strong downstream wind but it is not as strong as yesterday.

9th November 2015

Nothing today...

A better day for flying a kite rather than fishing, the wind was bad enough but the river dropped and inch, then came up 2 inches, then dropped again and so on. At the moment it is 2'9" (84cm) and rising.

We have saw a lot of fish today, all colours, all sizes and not stopping for toffee!!!

Steve says "I think we would have struggled to buy a fish today"!!!

Hopefully they'll stop tomorrow.

9th November 2015

The river is 2'5" (74cm) and holding steady, the river was up to 4'6" (1m37cm) yesterday. Air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

To say it is windy is an understatement !!!

7th November 2015

A Sea-Trout...

Another day of the fish tormenting us, lots of fish running with the rising water and not looking at the fly.

Jimmy M did manage to convince a 6lbs Sea-Trout to take in The Bridge Pool.

The river is 1'3" (38cm) and rising, it has also turned dirty and with the amount of rain we have had, we are expecting a much needed clear out.

Roll on Monday.

7th November 2015

The river is 5" (13cm) on the gauge, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

It raining heavily and Steve and Jimmy have said "the fish are on the move" !!!

6th November 2015

Nothing today...

I went up to the beat today, I arrived a bit later than normal and found our rods just finished their lunch and getting ready to go back out, nothing this morning but all reported that they were seeing a lot of fish.

As I watched Graham B in The Clure it was easy to see that there was a lot more fish in the beat than earlier in the week.

The fish were tormenting Graham and one fish jumped so close to him, he could have put his hand out and caught it !!!

Graham B in The Clure

It was becoming very clear that we have a lot of fish in the beat but at the moment they are not interested in taking. Everyone is waiting for that moment when they decide to switch on and take.

Can I say a big thank you to Iain Wilson at Borders Gunroom for helping us out by supplying a replacement rod section for one of our anglers.

Can I also congratulate Tom C and his family, whilst fishing yesterday Tom received news that his 9th grandchild had been born. Welcome to the world Emma.

6th November 2015

The river is 4" (10cm) on a the gauge, air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

We are expecting the river to rise at some point today.

5th November 2015

One more...

Ken F opened his account today, Ken on his second visit this season landed a 6lbs Sea-Trout in The Bridge Pool.

We are seeing a lot more fish in the beat today, no doubt helped by the rise in water. We are waiting to see if we get another rise from today's rain.

5th November 2015

The river is 4"(10cm) on the gauge, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

We are expecting the weather to take a turn for the better (if you are a Tweed Fisher) with lots more rain forecast later today.

4th November 2015

One today...

Conditions could not have been any more different than our two previous days, today we had cloud cover and drizzle. It was noticeable from early on that the river was slowly rising as a lot more leaves were coming downstream and it was becoming tiresome having to keep removing them from your fly.

The fish were a lot more visual today, no doubt enjoying not being blinded with bright sunshine, we did see small numbers of fish running through the beat as well as the current group of "residents" who have now been given pet names.

We are hoping the forecast heavy rain allows them to move on and also clear the very slippery riverbed.

Andrew B continued his good form and saved us from a blank today landing a 9lber in The Weavers.

Once again all eyes will be on the gauges.

4th November 2015

The river is 3" (7.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

We have had some overnight rain and it is cloudy and overcast this morning.

3rd November 2015

One today...

We have been blighted again with the same weather conditions as yesterday, fog early on then clear blue skies and blazing sunshine which when coupled with low and clear water, never makes for good fishing.

The weather however didn't stop Andrew B being top rod, landing a 3lbs Grilse in The Weavers, Andrew also had a couple of offers in The Bridge Pool and Gooselandale.

3rd November 2015

The river is 3" (7.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

2nd November 2015

It is November isn't it ???

Apologies for no river condition report this morning, I left home in the early hours to be on the beat and have 3 days fishing.

The river was 4" (10cm) on the gauge, air temp was a chilly 3C (37F) and water temp 8C (46F) and we had very thick fog.

However by 9:30, the sun had burnt off the fog and we had clear blue skies. It got hotter and hotter and all of us were shedding layers, when we came back to the bothy for lunch the air temperature was 18C (64F)!!!! for heavens sake its meant to be November.

Tales of woe again I'm afraid, Andrew B lost a fish at the net in The Bishop's and lost another in The Clure. Peter S also had an offer in The Gooselandale.

We are seeing fish but getting them to play is a different story.

Thats all folks...

Cecil D landed our last fish of the season, a 10lber in The Bridge Pool.

Roger C hooked into a good fish in The Bishop's.....and the bugger got off!!!

Roger realised it was pilot error after checking his leader, he was only using 13.6lbs!!!

More photos etc to follow as I have had a virtually non existent internet connection at the hotel.

29th November 2014

The river is 11" (28cm) and falling, air temp 9C (48F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

The final push...

28th November 2014

1 Sea-Trout...

Cecil D added another fish to his tally this morning, a 1 1/2lbs gleaming Sea-Trout in The Bishop's.

Our last day of the season tomorrow, can we finish on a high?

28th November 2014

The river is 12" (30cm) and falling, air temp 7C (45F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

27th November 2014

3 Today...

The weather can only be described as dreek today, we had very low cloud, heavy drizzle which would change to rain and back again, however there always is a silver lining.

Scott L landed 2 today, a 10lber in The Bishop's this morning and a 15lber in The Weavers this afternoon.

Cecil D also landed a 4lber in The Clure.

Cecil also lost an estimated 20lber today after having it on for over 5 minutes, it jumped twice then turned broadside to the current and slipped the hook. On closer inspection the hook had bent out......Bugger!!!

27th November 2014

The river is 12" (30cm) and falling, air temp 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

26th November 2014

Nothing today...

Nothing today for our team of rods, most of which left at lunch time for the long journey home.

We welcome a new team tomorrow for the final 3 days of the season.

26th November 2014

The river is 1'1" and holding steady, air temp 4C (39F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

25th November 2014

Bizarre...

Nothing for our team today as it appears the salmon have thrown the rule book out of the window.

Today we have seen a lot of fish and have threw everything, including the kitchen sink at them and had not so much as a pull.

Our rods have been standing in the river watching groups of about 6 and 7 fish moving slowly upstream past them, not the usual head and tailing you would normally associate with running fish but just slowly moving upstream just beneath the surface and completely ignoring our offerings.

It gets even stranger, at lunch time, Steve was trying out a rod in the runners and whilst stripping the fly back to recast a fish came off its lye and made 2 attempts at the fly!!!

Aha we thought, cracked it, that's what they want...............nope!!!

Then late this afternoon Cecil D reported that he watched a pod of fish swim past him in The Bridge Pool, in 6" of water, completely avoiding the deeper channel.

Bizarre.........is it Sunday yet?

25th November 2014

Well the frost we wanted didn't come and the air temp is 6C 43F,water temp is 7C 45F and the river is 1'1" (33cm) and falling.

24th November 2014

Nothing today...

Nothing for the book today and although we have saw fish today, they were no where near a visible as they have been in previous weeks.

Hopefully tonight's forecast frost and a falling river will improve our chances for tomorrow.

24th November 2014

This river is 1'4" (41cm) and falling, air temp 7C (45F) and water temp is 7C (45F).

22nd November 2014

1 Today...

The river has been on a very slow rise over the course of the day, we started at 1'6" (46cm) and at the end of the day it was holding steady at 1'8" (51cm)

This didn't stop John E landing another fish, a 15lber from the Upper Runners.

A day of rest tomorrow, then a new team on Monday.

22nd November 2014

The river is 1'6" (46cm) and rising, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

21st November 2014

Big mouth...

Well, me and my big mouth must have jinxed it today, so much for long may it continue.

Our team of rods didn't even have a single offer.

This season is like a rollacoaster, without any up and down bits...... in Holland.

21st November 2014

The river is 1'6" (46cm) and falling. air temp 5C (41F) and water temp is 7C (45F)

20th November 2014

3 Today...

John E re-opened his account today on his second visit to Upper Caberston this season.

John landed and returned 2 Salmon, a 15lber in The Gooselandale and a 8lber in the Lower Runners.

Derek C also got on the scoresheet today, Derek landed and returned a 13lber in The Bishop's.

Also worthy of a mention was Geoff T, fishing at Upper Caberston for the first time.

Geoff had what he described as the biggest thumping take of his life in The Bridge Pool. Geoff counted 1,2,3 and lifted into the fish and unfortunately after a brief "handshake".....the bugger got off!!!

3 Today...long may it continue.

20th November 2014

The river is 1'7" (48cm) and holding steady, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

19th November 2014

Hip,Hip,Hooray...2 Today...

Steve has been pulled from depression with 2 fish today, all though he did have to roll the pen between his hands to get the ink flowing as it has been a while since he last used it to write in the catch records!!!

David D landed a 7lber in The Gooselandale, this was David's first Tweed Salmon and John W landed our second fish, a 4lber in The Clure.

Stan M had a brief "handshake" in The Weavers.

Well done men.

We welcome a new team tomorrow.

19th November 2014

The river is 1'9" (53cm) and falling, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

18th November 2014

and the bugger got off...

Does anyone else detect a trend this season!!!

Mark C lost a fish in The Bishop's after having it on for a few minutes.

We have seen a lot of clean fish today and with the river dropping our team remain hopeful and are looking forward to tomorrow.

18th November 2014

The river is 2'3" (69cm) and falling, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

17th November 2014

Nothing today...

With the river on the rise yet again, we only have brief encounters to report for Arnold S in the Lower Runners and for David D in The Clure.

Once again we have seen lots of running fish in all colours and sizes, we really could do with some settled water levels.

Is it to much to read anything into it that Dryburgh L have had 5 salmon today, the biggest being 9lbs.

Could it be a late Grilse run?

Poor Steve has The Samaritans on speed dial.

17th November 2014

The river is 2'3" (69cm) and holding steady, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

15th November 2014

Nothing today...

With the river being at a historically awkward height for us, there is nothing to report for our team of rods other than a brief 'handshake' in The Bishop's for Brian W.

The river has dropped back to 2'7" (79cm) tonight but we could really do with a foot and a half off that.

This high and unseasonably warm water is letting the fish run straight through us.

Steve has given our team 10 out of 10 for sticking in and not giving up.

Well done lads.

15th November 2014

After peaking at 5'6" (1.68m) last night, the river is 3'3" (99cm) and falling, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

14th November 2014

Manky weather, manky water...

The weather gods weren't playing nice today and the weather was described as the kind you wouldn't put the bin out in.

This sent the river on the up and turned it very dirty, not just the main river but also the burns running into it were also very dirty.

We did see some big fish running tight to the riverbank before it became to coloured and filled with flotsam and jetsam.

The river is 3'9" (1.14m) and rising........Bugger!!!

14th November 2014

The river is 2'3" (69cm) and falling, air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp 11C (52F)

We have a strong upstream wind this morning.

13th November 2014

You've guessed it...

Tom C hooked a fish in The Bridge Pool.....and the bugger got off!!!

Brian W hooked a fish in The Bridge Pool.....and the bugger got off!!!

Steve says our team of rods fished hard, right into darkness for no reward.

We've ordered Des O'Connor's album and some underwater speakers to see if we can get them to jump into the net!!!

13th November 2014

The river is 2'5" (74cm) and falling, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

12th November 2014

1 for the Ghillie...

The river continued its slow rise and peaked at 2'6" (76cm) today and once again we saw lots and lots of fish running the beat.

As some of our rods left early for the journey home, Steve had a cast in The Bridge Pool and 3rd cast he hooked and landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout.

As Steve says "it was just a case of right place, right time." Steve was using a floating shooting head with a 15' 3ips tip and a RS Super Snaelda.

12th November 2014

The river is 2'2" (66cm) and rising, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

11th November 2014

Lot's a fish about, but taking nowt...

Nothing for our team of rods today, once again we are seeing them but getting them to take is a different matter.

The river has slowly crept up to the 1'9" (53cm) mark and after heavy rain this morning and Steve tells me it is raining heavy at the moment, we are expecting the river to rise tonight.

11th November 2014

The river is 1'7" (48cm) and is steady on the gauge, air temp 9C (48F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

We have heavy rain this morning.

Anglers 1 - 1 Salmon

Congratulations to Andrew B who opened his account today with a 6lber in The Bridge Pool

Malcolm S hooked a fish in The Bishop's.........and the bugger got off!!!

Our team have once again been tormented by seeing a lot of clean fish, one jumped cheekily under Andrew's rod tip and was promptly given the V sign, cheeky bugger!!!

We really could do with the river dropping to hold them up.

10th November 2014

The river is 1'10" (56cm) and falling, air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Quite foggy this morning.

8th November 2014

Nothing today...

Our run of involuntary catch and release continues with Lewis T losing a fish in The Weaver's and Ray S losing his in The Cauld Hole.

Once again we have had fish running through the beat and not stopping for anything, hopefully a lower and colder river on Monday will turn things around.

8th November 2014

The river is 2'6" (76cm) and falling, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

7th November 2014

2 Sea-Trout...

The good news for Peter S, was that he landed a 2 1/2lbs Sea-Trout in The Bridge Pool.

The bad news for Peter was he lost a fish, estimated at 25lbs in The Clure, he hooked his fish in the top part of The Clure and it went absolutely ballistic, bending his rod almost double and had his reel screaming as his backing was soon whizzing through the rings, by this time his fish was in The Gooselandale and you've guest it.....the bugger got off!!!

To add insult to injury he then went back into The Clure and lost another fish estimated at 12lbs.....double bugger!!!

As Peter says, the memory of that fight will stay with him for a while.

Robert M also lost a fish in The Bridge Pool, just when he thought it was ready for landing...triple bugger!!!

Thankfully Shane M landed our second Sea-Trout of the day, a 3lber from The Bridge Pool.

Steve tells me that they saw a lot of clean fish running the river this morning, no doubt helped by the rising water which peaked today at 4'1" (1.24m)

7th November 2014

The river is 2'7" (79cm) and rising, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

It has been raining all night and is forecast not to stop until late afternoon, we also have a strengthening upstream wind.

6th November 2014

Now you see them, now you don't...

Nothing for our team today who had to contend all day with rain and a cold upstream easterly wind.

Graham B lost a big fish in The Bridge Pool.

Graham thought he had snagged on the bottom, he gave it a yank and a big fella came out of the water like a Polaris missile with his fly in its mouth, this then resulted in a load of slack line.....you guessed it......the bugger got off!!!

Steve said that he barely saw a fish today, had the temperature change switched them off, had they all moved further upstream, or are they just keeping their heads down?

Stay tuned for tomorrow...

6th November 2014

The river is 1'7" (48cm) on the gauge, air temp 4C (39F) and water temp is 6C (43F).

5th November 2014

One today...

Dr. Peter S spared us a blank today, Peter landed and returned a 7lber in The Bridge Pool.

His fish was most welcome as he has had a few blank years at Caberston.

Well done mate.

Dennis F hooked a good fish in The Gooselandale and as what seems to be par for the course this season......the bugger got off!!!

Steve say there is a lot more fish running the beat at the moment and they are not as coloured as the fish we have seen earlier in the season.

5th November 2014

The river is 1'11" (58cm) and falling, air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Bright and sunny this morning.

4th November 2014

2 Today...

Ed M added another 2 to his scoresheet, a 24lber from The Bridge Pool and a 16lber from the Lower Runners.

Steve says both of Ed's fish gave really good accounts of themselves, hooking his 24lber in the top of the Bridge Pool, it was finally netted in the tail of the pool.

Ed's 16lber took off from the Lower Runners just below the submerged island and was finally landed sometime later in The Weaver.

Both fish returned.

The weather turned nasty again this afternoon, with heavy rain and dropping temperatures.

On the bright side, the team have saw a lot of fish running through the beat today. Getting them to take is the challenge.

4th November 2014

The river is holding steady at 2'6" (76cm), air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

3rd November 2014

4 Today...

Top rod honours for today goes to Ed M, Ed landed a 25lber and a brace of 4lb Grilse, all in The Bridge Pool.

Ray S also opened his account with a Salmon of 171/2 lbs from The Bishop's.

All fish returned.

Dennis F also lost a good fish in The Gooselandale after a good fight.

We have had a rise in water and some rain this afternoon, hopefully nothing to spoil tomorrow's fishing.

3rd November 2014

The river is 2'3" (69cm) and falling, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

Thankfully the air and water temperatures are more realistic but we could have done without yesterday's rise of water which has given us a historically difficult river height today.

1st November 2014

One of each...

John E finished his visit to Caberston with a 5lber from The Bridge Pool taking his tally for his 3 days to 2 Salmon and 3 Sea-Trout.

Michael E landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout from The Gooselandale.

Tales of woe for Graham M who lost a very big fish in The Gooselandale, likewise for Hugh N, fishing Caberston for the first time also lost a good fish in The Bishop's.

Hopefully the river will drop tomorrow and with cooler temperatures forecast, the fish will be held up and be more prepared to take our new teams offerings on Monday.

1st November 2014

The river is 2'1" (64cm) and rising, air temp is 15C (59F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

A New Beat Record!!!

Steve added another 2 fish to the book today giving us a new beat record of 151 Salmon.

Steve landed a 10lber in The Bishop's this morning and a 3lber in The Clure this afternoon.

Jimmy M lost a fish in The Bridge Pool.

I think it is a very fitting reward for Steve to land our record breaking fish as when I took over the reins of Upper Caberston in 2009, Steve had a wish and a very strong belief that Caberston could achieve a 5 year average of 100 Salmon and this season it became a reality.

I can just picture him now, at home in his chair with his feet up, a glass of whiskey in his hand and nodding off with a wry grin on his face.

Sleep well you deserve it my friend.

30th November 2013

The final push...

The river is 4" on the gauge, air temp 1C, water temp 38F.

My update will be late this evening as I will be travelling home, thankfully to a usable internet connection.

29th November 2013

1 Today and a broken record

A very strong downstream wind made casting interesting today and with it came more leaves in the river.

Steve Dickson landed our only fish today, a 10lber from The Bishop's. Steve's fish means we have beaten the beat record of 148 Salmon in one season.

Jimmy M lost a fish in The Bridge Pool.

We are looking forward to the challenge of raising the beat record on the last day of the season.

28th November 2013

8 Today...

Ed the Dig finished on a high this morning landing 4 before heading home, Ed landed a 6lber and 2, 5lbers from The Bridge Pool, he also had a 8lber from The Weaver.

Cecil D landed a 5lber from The Clure, Cecil also lost a Big fish in The Bishop's this morning. After a savage take, his fish tore off downstream and all he could do was hang on as he saw his running line, then backing empty from his reel, he managed to turn his fish but unfortunately it threw the hook. On inspection, the fish had bent out his hook!

As there was only myself and Cecil fishing in the afternoon, we invited Steve the Ghillie for a cast and Steve landed a 15lber from The Bishop's and a 8lber from Shaw's, he also lost a couple this afternoon.

Yours truly also landed a 13lber from The Clure.

We have equalled the beat record of 148 Salmon and we have 2 days remaining!

No pressure then!

27th November 2013

3 Salmon and 2 Sea-Trout...

Ed the Dig spared our blushes today, landing all our fish.

Ed had a 8lbs and a 10lbs Salmon plus 2, 3lb Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool. He had a 6lbs Salmon from The Bishop's.

The rest of us had a day of frustration, losing a couple of fish and occasional 'handshake's'. We were however spurred on by the number of fish showing throughout the beat.

Ed the Dig continued his excellent form landing 5 today, Ed had a 20lber, a 8lber and a 13lber from The Bishop's, he also landed a 15lber and a 4lber in The Bridge Pool.

Fish of the day goes to Cecil D with a personal best fish of 30lbs from The Island Pool.

Roll on tomorrow!

25th November 2013

7 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout...

Another cold day and even with a delayed start we suffered from the rod rings icing up.

Yours truly got things underway with a 15lber on my third cast from The Gooselandale.

Ed "The Dig" M had a very good day landing 5 Salmon and a Sea-Trout. Ed had a 20lber and a 6lber from The Clure, he also had two 6lbers, a 5lber and 3lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

Cecil D landed a 18lber from The Bishop's. Cecil also lost a big fish in the Upper Runners, his fish took of like a freight train downstream before coming back up stream and seeking refuge in some boulders which then resulted in a game of"gain some line, lose some line," all the while his leader was rubbing on the boulders which resulted in a break and the rest is history.

Bob L also lost a couple of fish today.

We already have achieved our second best season on record, with 5 days remaining can we beat our 2010 record season?

4 Today...

Nathan F finished his last day on a high landing 2 Salmon, a 12lber from The Cauld Hole and a 14lber from The Bridge Pool.

John E landed a 12lber in The Bridge Pool, taking his total to 5 fish for his 3 days.

Last but by know means least, Derek C landed a 13lber in The Bishop's.

It is hard to believe that we are into the last week of the season on Monday.

22nd November 2013

3 Today...

A bitterly cold day today and our team of rods had a delayed start after trying first thing, we were plagued with frozen rod rings. A couple of coffees later and we were back in business.

Terry C got things under way with a 10 1/2 lber from The Bishop's.

John E added another to his scores he et with a 5lber from The Bridge Pool.

Nathan F also opened his account with a 10lber from The Gooselandale.

William E still struggled to get a fish on the bank, losing 2 today.

21st November 2013

4 Today...

I went up to the beat again today to visit our new team of rods and this time I remembered to put the memory card in the camera.

Sally and Ally enjoying The Bridge Pool

John E had a very good day on his second visit to Caberston this season, John landed 3 salmon, a 20lber from The Cauld Hole, a 6lber from The Gooselandale and a 5lber from The Bishop's. John also lost a fish in The Bridge Pool.

Derek C opened his account today with a 4lber from The Island Pool.

Derek fishing The Cauld Hole.

Also worthy of a mention is William E who practised involuntary catch and release on 3 occasions today.

Winter was starting to make itself known as we had a couple of snow and hail flurries today, the roaring fire and a hot bowl of soup in The Bothy was a welcome relief.

Our first dusting of snow.

20th November 2013

Nothing today...

I went up to the beat today to visit our rods and they were fishing in, at times, some horrible conditions. We had a rising river which was starting to colour, as it was rising it was collecting the leaves from the river banks and add into the mix, a biting strong downstream wind.

Two of our rods left after lunch for the journey home, another 2 rods succumb to the calls of the bar, which left us with our remaining 2 rods who stuck at it and fished until the very end, but unfortunately for no reward.

Apologies for the lack of photographs, but a certain somebody forgot to put his memory card in the camera. Doh!!!

We are looking forward to more settled conditions tomorrow.

The river is 6" on the gauge, air temp 4C, water temp 41F.

16th November 2013

2 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout...

The horrible downstream wind returned today and once again it made casting difficult, but it didn't stop us from catching again today.

A good day for Michael K, Michael landed 3 fish, all from The Bridge Pool, Michael landed a 20lber, a 5lber and a 4lbs Sea-Trout.

Michael also lost a large fish in The Bishop's, he thought he had snagged up on a rock and give his rod a yank which resulted in a shock, as a big Salmon leaped out of the water with his fly in it's mouth, the fish continued to motor upstream and he couldn't get the slack line on the reel quick enough and the rest is history.

Paul L also lost a fish in The Weaver.

The fish in the beat were a lot more visual today and we don't know if the wind rippling the water was agitating them, whatever the reason it spurred on our rods.

16th November 2013

The river is 6" on the gauge, air temp 11C, water temp 41F.

15th November 2013

4 Today...

Brian W continued his good run, landing 2 today, Brian had a 12lber from The Cauld Hole and a 5lber from The Weaver.

Paul L got off the mark with a 10lber from The Weaver

A good fish today for Tom C, a 25lber from The Bishop's. Tom's fish was his first ever Scottish mainland salmon after previously catching a salmon on the Isle of Lewis and smashed his personal best by 16lbs.

14th November 2013

1 Today...

A bitterly cold and very strong downstream wind spoiled things today, the wind made casting very difficult for our team of rods.

Even more frustrating was one of our rods developed a major leak in his waders and had to leave in search of a new pair and another beat a hasty retreat as he was frozen to the bone from the cold wind.

It was good news however for Brian W, Brian was overjoyed after breaking his 2 year "fish drought" after he landed a 20lber from The Weaver on his 3rd cast this morning.

Michael Kitson lost a fish this afternoon in The Upper Runners.

We are seeing a lot of fish throughout the beat, getting them to take is a different matter.

14th November 2013

The river is 6" on the gauge, air temp 5C, water temp 40F. We also have a very strong and cold downstream wind. Winter is on it's way.

13th November 2013

1 Today...

Andrew B finished on a high, landing a 12lber from The Gooselandale.

Andrew has landed a fish on each of his 3 days at Caberston, he had a 5lber on Monday, a 3lbs Sea-Trout yesterday and a 12lber today.

12th November 2013

2 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout...

I went up to see our team of rods today and as I arrived in the car park, M "Donny"Donovan had just landed a 9lber from The Weaver.

Donny and John were having a laugh winding up their mate Paul as he hadn't had a fish yet.

Paul "No Pressure" N

Donny relaxing after catching his 9lber earlier today

We had a very cold and strong downstream wind and it was nice to get back to The Bothy for the warmth of the fire and some lunch.

Packed lunch, Caberston style

This afternoon John H landed a 5lber in The Gooselandale.

Peter B lost 2 fish in The Bridge Pool.

We did have a sharp frost first thing this morning but the temperature has risen quite quickly.

9th November 2013

4 Salmon and 2 Sea-Trout...

Ray S ended his week on a high landing 3 Salmon, Ray landed a 12lber, a 9lber and a 5lber all in The Clure.

Jimmy M also had an enjoyable day, Jimmy landed a 5lber in The Upper Runners and a 5lbs and 4lbs Sea-Trout in The Bridge Pool.

We had a slight rise in water this afternoon which we believe is from snow melt. The tops of the hills had their first covering of snow this morning and as the temperature came up, the hilltops cleared.

This afternoon we also saw a lot of fresh Grilse in the 5-6lbs bracket running the river.

Fingers crossed for next week.

9th November 2013

The river is holding at 10", air temp 4C, water temp 39F

8th November 2013

Nothing today...

I went up to see our team of rods today and as we only have 5 rods fishing, I also decided to have a cast.

With the exception of Lewis T getting 6 offers, but non of them sticking, things were pretty quiet for us, every now and then fish would start splashing about in the pools and then go quiet.

That didn't stop our team enjoying themselves and this evening when I left The Bothy for the drive home, they had broke out into song!

It just goes to prove that there is more to fishing than fish.

7th November 2013

1 Sea-Trout...

There is one thing you can say about salmon fishing, it certainly keeps you guessing.

We started the day with great expectations, based on the 3 days previous catches and our rods were reporting pulls and plucks at their flies.

Lewis T opened his account on his first visit to Upper Caberston with a 5lbs Sea-Trout this morning from The Bishop's.

Just before lunch the river started to rise and was beginning to carry some colour, there must have been some heavy showers to the west of us. Steve says "the fish seemed to have switched off, we barely saw a fish all afternoon let alone a offer."

Salmon fishing, don't you just love it!!!

7th November 2013

This river is 1'3" this morning, air temp 6C, water temp 41F.

6th November 2013

14 Salmon and a new biggest fish record!!!

Our team of rods had a red letter day, so much so I don't know which fish to report first!

Here goes...

Andrew P landed his first Caberston Salmon, a 14lber from The Bridge Pool.

Ray S landed a 20lber from The Clure.

Dennis F landed a 6lber from The Bridge Pool, Dennis also lost 2 fish.

Ed "The Dig" M continued his great run landing 6, a 6lber and a 8lber from The Bishop's, a 5lber from The Gooselandale, a 6lber from The Clure and a 10lber from The Bridge Pool.

Ed also landed our first "Blue Back" of the season, a 20lber from The Bishop's. Ed has landed 16 fish in his 3 days!

Today is a day that will be etched in the memory of Michael R for the rest of his life.

Michael landed 5 fish today, he had 3, 5lbers and a 6lber from The Gooselandale, 4 fish from one pool is great by any standard, but it pales into insignificance with one fish.

Michael not only achieved a personal best but also set a new biggest fish record for Upper Caberston with an estimated 40 lbs Salmon!!! from The Bishop's

After a epic 25 minute 'tug of war' battle and with not just Steve in the water with a net but also Ed the Dig, Michael landed his fish of a lifetime.

Michael's salmon measured 49" long!!!

"Fish of a lifetime."

Well done men.

6th November 2013

The river is holding steady at 1'2", however we are expecting a rise as the gauging stations further upstream are rising. Air temp 6C, water temp 41F.

5th November 2013

6 Salmon and 7 lost...

I went up to the beat to meet our team of rods today, they are a great group, a laugh is never far away, even more so when the drams are flowing, for medicinal purposes you understand.

Ed "The Dig" M continued his good run landing 4,this morning Ed landed a 12lber from The Clure, a 12lber from The Bridge Pool, then this afternoon he landed a 12lber and a 10lber from The Bridge Pool. He also lost 3 fish today.

"The Dig" in action as Michael Reay looks on.

Michael R lost 2 fish today, he changed everything, including his trousers to try and get a fish on the bank.

Dennis F landed a 14lber in full tartan from The Clure this afternoon, his fish put up a great fight and as soon as Dennis put it back in the water it was off like a bullet.

Nearly there..

Dennis and his 14lber

Dennis also lost 2 fish today.

Ray S also added another fish to his scorecard, a 5lber from The Bridge Pool.

The beat is looking stunning at the moment and sometimes you just have to sit down and enjoy it.

Ed "The Dig" M had a cracking day landing 6 Salmon and a Sea-Trout!

Ed had a 18lber, two 6lbers, two 5lbers and a 3lbs Sea-Trout all from The Bridge Pool and this afternoon he added a 12lber from The Cauld Hole, he also lost a fish in The Bishop's.

Ray S also opened his account today with a 5lber from The Gooselandale.

Dennis F lost a big fish in The Bridge Pool after playing it for 10 minutes and Michael R also lost a fish in The Clure.

All our anglers have reported getting lots of plucks and pulls at their flies.

Dr. Patrick W, still smiling from his beautiful 13lber yesterday landed a 12lber in The Clure.

4 Today including a first fish...

I went up to visit our team of rods today and it was a very special day for one angler.

At the ripe old age of 12 years old, Sasha E landed her first ever Salmon under the expert guidance of her father Michael Evans, Sasha landed a 13lber from The Weaver. (Photo to follow)

Team Evans

Not content with one fish, Sasha then landed another from the same pool.

Steady, Steady.

Sasha's second fish a 9lber

When Michael was able to prise the rod from Sasha, he landed a 7lber, also from The Weaver.

Also on today's scoresheet with a cracking 13lber was Dr. Patrick W who landed his fish in The Gooselandale.

30th November 2012

REEL BAD LUCK.

We fished the last day in sub zero conditions, we started at -5 C and got to the tropical high of -2 C!

Matthew G hooked a fish in The Cauld Hole and as the fish tried to take line, to Matthew's horror, his reel was frozen solid! 'ping' and the rest is history.

It has certainly been a poor season for the angler,I fished the last 8 days with not so much as a pull, but I am hearing good reports that it has not been a poor season for the Salmon.

More on this when I post our end of season review in the coming weeks.

The river is 1'8" this morning, water temp 38 F, air temp -5 C

29th November 2012

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY.

Nothing for the book today although Cecil D lost a fish in the Upper Runners, bitterly cold again today causing the rod rings to ice up, but enjoyable all the same.

29th November 2012

The river is 2' this morning, water temp 39 F, air temp -3 C

28th November 2012

NOT EVEN A PULL.

A hard day at the office, bitterly cold and not many fish showing and not one of us even got so much as an offer, Golf anyone?

28th November 2012

The river is 2'4" and dropping, water temp 40 F, air temp 0 C.

27th November 2012

CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE SALMON KIND.

Nothing today other than a few brief 'handshakes'. It felt really 'fishy' today, it was overcast and the air temperature started to rise, it just felt 'fishy', however the fish did not agree.

27th November 2012

The river is 2'9" and rising this morning, water temp 42 F, air temp 4 C.

26th November 2012

AT LAST A FISH!!!

Never has a fish, been so welcomed by a beat owner, and caught in weather you wouldn't put your bin out in!!!

We had a very strong upstream wind to contend with and added to the mix, at times, heavy rain. Then this afternoon, the wind couldn't make its mind up which way it wanted to blow, which resulted in some interesting casts.

To the fish, a 5lber for Paul L from The Bridge Pool, which he returned to "go and make babies".

At last a fish!

26th November 2012

The river is 3' this morning, water temp 41 F, air temp 5 C

24th November 2012

CLOSE BUT NO CIGAR!

Derek C managed to hook and land a 10 lber in The Bridge Pool, but is was foul hooked and therefore not a countable fish and was safely returned.

We are seeing fish which is encouraging but not in the numbers we would normally expect.

24th November 2012

The river is 3' on the gauge this morning, water 40 F, air temp -1C. We have a hard frost this morning.

23rd November 2012

ANOTHER BLANK.

The river was dropping steadily today,we started on 5'6" and finished at 4'3", the downside was that the river, surprisingly, remained coloured all day.

23rd November 2012

The river 5'6" and holding steady after rising to well over 7' last night! water temp 41 F air temp 4 C

22nd November 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

We had what only can be described as foul weather today, although the wind did not get as strong as forecast, it was still problematic, one minute downstream, then upstream and then everything in between.

The rain however was at times, so heavy, you could feel the vibrations from the raindrops hitting the rod through the handle!

We managed to get a couple of pulls before lunch but nothing solid, during lunch the river started to colour and rise rapidly.

Some of our rods tried some of the likely ambush points on the beat and even got a couple of pulls. As the river continued to rise and become more coloured, we called it a day and as we left, the river was approaching 5'6" and still rising!

22nd November 2012

The river is 2' this morning, water temp 43 F, air temp 9 C

21st November 2012

ONE TODAY.

John E added another Sea-Trout to his account, a 2 1/2 lber from The Bridge Pool, he also landed another Grayling from the same spot this one 2 lbs.

21st November 2012

The river is 2'6" this morning after rising last night, water temp. 42 F, air temp 5 C

20th November 2012

A MIXED BAG!

John E had a good session today, a 5 lbs Grilse, 2 Sea-Trout of 3 and 4 lbs and a Grayling of 3 lbs, all from The Bridge Pool.

We also lost a couple of good fish, one of which was hooked in The Bishop's, ran down through The Clure, through the Gooselandale, crossed the weir in to The Cauld Hole and threw the hook!

20th November 2012

The river has dropped back to 2'9" this morning, water temp 43 F, air temp 10 C

19th November 2012

ONE TODAY.

I went up to the beat today to meet our rods, I already knew the river was rising after speaking to Steve in the morning and my heart began to sink on the journey up as all the rivers and burns I crossed where dirty, so I was not expecting good news when I arrived on the beat at lunch time.

When I arrived the river was 3' and rising and beginning to colour, but it was welcome relief to hear the news as our rods returned to the Bothy for lunch.

Terry C had a 5lbs Grilse from The Clure and John E, with us for the second occasion, was well practised in involuntary catch and release, he managed to lose 3 Salmon and a Sea-Trout!

After lunch the river continued to rise and became even more coloured, the team stuck at it, nothing for them in the afternoon. At close of play the river was 4'6" and still rising.

19th November 2012

The river is 1'10" and rising this morning, water temp 42 F, air temp 7 C.

17th November 2012

THE DROUGHT CONTINUES.

A blank 3 days for our team of rods, as I let out a sigh as Steve tells me the news, I ask him how are they taking it? Everyone is talking about how they can't wait to come back next year! was the reply.

Thank you men.

17th November 2012

This river is 2' on the gauge this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 4 C.

16th November 2012

ANOTHER BLANK!

Other than Tom C losing a fish in The Bridge Pool, I'm afraid to say, nothing to report.

I wonder if The Samaritans have a special department for Ghillies!

16th November 2012

This river is 2'5" this morning, water temp 43 F, air temp 3 C.

15th November 2012

NOT EVEN A PULL.

We welcomed a new team of rods today and I went up to meet them, some of our rods arrived yesterday and saw the river very high and very dirty. Oh No!

So it was with a welcome degree of relief when the river was 3'4" and dropping this morning but more importantly the colour had cleared nicely.

Although they saw a lot of fish, none of the fish were tempted to their offerings.

At close of play this evening the river had dropped to 2'9" and was continuing to fall.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring an end to our lean spell.

15th November 2012

The river is 3'4" this morning and has cleared nicely and is perfectly fishable. Water temp 45 F, air temp 6 C.

14th November 2012

WASHED OFF!

The river continued to rise today, half our rods left this morning, and the other half left mid afternoon after trying in vain. The river is 6' and still rising, it is still a very dirty brown. Bugger!!!

14th November 2012

The river is 4'10" and rising and looks like Ox Tail Soup! Air temp 9 C. Steve has not taken the water temperature in fear of losing the thermometer.

13th November 2012

ANOTHER BLANK.

Other than a brief handshake in The Bishop's, nothing for the book.

More frustrating is that we are seeing a lot of fish but can't get a take.

I can't decide what Steve will lose first, his hair or his marbles!

13th November 2012

The river is 1'1" this morning. water temp 42 F, air temp a balmy 13 C.

12th November 2012

LOST 2.

We dropped 2 fished today, both to David D rod, he lost his first fish in The Bridge Pool, he lost his second fish in The Bishop's, just as it was coming to the net!

12th November 2012

The river is 1'2" on the gauge, water temp 40 F, air temp 4 C.

Steve says he has already seen a few fish splashing outside the Bothy.

10th November 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

Another day with no fish to report, our rods went through the flybox, changed tactics and so on.

A day of frustration considering we have saw a lot of fish but can't tempt them to the fly.

10th November 2012

The river is 1'6" this morning, water temp 40 F, air temp 3 C.

9th November 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

Not for the want of trying, our team of rods fished until dark with no reward.

I went up to the beat today, to pay my rods a visit. They were in good spirits and have seen a lot of fish, including one estimated at 40lbs! Steve first saw it crossing the weir and later on Steven H saw it in The Gooselandale.

Could it have been ' The Beast of Bemersyde" caught at the end of October?

9th November 2012

The river is 1'5" this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 8 C.

8th November 2102

TWO MORE.

We welcomed a new group of rods today.

Arnold S opened his account today with a 14 lber in The Bishops, he hooked his fish and it turned broadside to take advantage of the fast water, then took off like a missile down river, at one point he had 200 yards of backing out!

Arnold had to follow it through the bottom part of Bishops, then he had to go through a gate, then through The Clure Pool and into The Gooselandale, after 30 minutes he managed to land it before it slipped over the weir into The Cauld Hole!

Ray S, spending 6 days with us, added another fish to his tally, a 11 lber from The Bridge Pool in the very last shimmers of daylight.

Shane M and Alfie R both lost fish today.

8th November 2012

The river is 1'10" and steady this morning as we had rain to the West last night, water temp. 43 F, air temp 8 C.

7th November 2012

TWO TODAY.

Ray S added another fish to his scorecard, a 24 lber from The Bishops.

Neil S was rewarded today on his first visit to Upper Caberston with a 16 lber also from The Bishops.

Both fish returned.

7th November 2012

The river is holding at 1'3" this morning, water temp 42 F, air temp 9 C.

6th November 2012

TWO TODAY.

Ray S got things underway today with a 5 lb Grilse from The Weaver. This fish was most welcome as it made up for yesterday, as he had a slight accident which resulted in a treble hook stuck in his hand and had to pay a visit to the local GP to have it removed.

Nick E also scored today with a 14 lber from The Bridge Pool, Nick hooked his fish in last few slivers of daylight.

Both fish returned.

I was up on the beat today, visiting our team of rods after being overseas for 2 weeks.

The lads are in very good spirits and are seeing a lot of fish, the banter and leg pulling around the table in the Bothy this evening was very enjoyable, no doubt helped along with a little 'whiskey alchemy' going on and great to hear and see glasses raised in a toast to Ray and Nick on their success today.

6th November 2012

The river is 1'3" on the gauge, water temp 40 F air temp 7 C

5th November 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

A blank day for our team of rods, although we saw plenty of fish, getting one to take was a different story.

5th November 2012

The river is 1'3" this morning, water temp 42 F, air temp -1 C

3rd November 2012

ONE TODAY.

One fish today for Ed (The Dig) M, a 5lber from The Clure, Ed also lost a couple of fish this morning.

3rd November 2012

The river is 1'11" on the gauge this morning, water temp 43 F, air temp 1 C

2nd November 2012

3 TODAY.

Peter S caught a 9 lber today in The Cauld Hole.

Robin W had 2 today, a 9 lber from The Clure and a 27 lb cock fish, dressed in full tartan from the Lower Runners, which was safely returned.

We have also had a lot of pulls and plucks from fish today.

2nd November 2012

The river is 2'8" this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 5 C.

1st November 2012

2 Grilse and a Sea-Trout.

Dennis F fishing for the first time at Upper Caberston was rewarded with a 5 lbs Grilse from The Clure.

Michael R had 2 today, a 4 lbs Grilse and a 5 lbs Sea-Trout, both from the Bridge Pool.

We also lost 3 fish today, all in the Bridge Pool, they were using the fast water to their advantage and we were unable to hold on to them.

Steve says there are a lot of Grilse running the beat at the moment.

I've noticed FishTweed are having some technical problems at the moment so for anyone wanting to know the river height, we were 2'4" on the gauge and dropping at 17:00.

1st November 2012

The river is 3'1" and dropping this morning after rising to 6' yesterday, water temp 44 F, air temp 1C.

The river is still carrying a lot of colour, but is clearing at the edges so Steve is putting our new team of rods on the bends and clearer spots this morning.

30th November 2011

WASHED OFF!

We were unable to fish the final day of the season after the flood. The river was to dirty and there was debris everywhere.

The water was over 1' deep in the carpark. You can see from the pictures below the debris and where the the branch is wedged in the fence how high the water came up.

Just spare a thought for poor Steve who now has to start clearing the debris.

I will be posting a full end of season report in December.

30th November 2011

The river is 6' on the gauge and falling after rising to 10' last night. Steve had to empty the tool shed as the river was lapping at the steps of the bothy.

The river this morning is un-fishable as it looks more like a torrent of hot chocolate than a river.

Air temperature is 4 degrees.

29th November 2011

ONE SEA-TROUT.

In what can only be described as horrendous conditions we managed a Sea-Trout this morning before calling it a day after lunch.

Daryl E caught a 2lbs Sea-Trout from the Bridge Pool and lost another, just in the slack water as the Walkerburn enters the Tweed.

We started the day at 4' and finished at 6' and rising by lunchtime. We had rain, torrential at times, driven by nearly storm force winds. As the morning progressed the water got higher and dirtier and we unanimously called it a day.

Hopefully the water will be fishable for the last day of the season tomorrow.

29th November 2011

The river is 4' and rising, air temperature is 7 degrees and we have gale force South, South Westerly winds.

28th November 2011

ONE TODAY.

An 8lbs Salmon for yours truly today from the Weaver's. Unfortunately this was one of the diseased fish and it fought like a wet rag. I returned the fish to let mother nature decide its fate.

28th November 2011

The river is 2'6" and dropping after rising to 5' on Sunday. The river has a 'tea like' colour and the air temperature is 6 degrees with a light South Westerly breeze.

26th November 2011

TWO TODAY

Cecil D was on the score sheet again today, Cecil caught 2 Grilse, a 5lber from the Upper Runners and another 5lber from the Clure.

We had horrendous weather conditions today, gale force winds all day, some gusts strong enough that you thought you were going to be blown into the river, then this afternoon we had heavy rain.

Still we managed 2 fish and others had brief 'hand shakes' with some fish.

Yesterday only one fish was recorded on Fishtweed to our four!

26th November 2011

The river is 2'4" and falling this morning, air temperature is 10 degrees and we have gale force winds.

25th November 2011

FOUR TODAY.

Cecil D had a red letter day catching 3 Salmon, a 25lber from the Upper Runners, a 16lber from the Bishop's Pool and a magical, gleaming silver,'Blueback' Salmon of 14lbs from the Bridge Pool.

3 fish weighing 55lbs, I think Cecil might just stop grinning a week next Friday.

And last but by no means least, Ed the Dig caught a 10lbs Salmon from the Bridge Pool.

A fantastic day by any ones standards, but our rods had to contend with high, dirty water, gale force winds with heavy rain and hail showers.

The rods at Upper Caberston are made of the good stuff.

Well done lads.

25th November 2011

The river is 3'6" and rising, the water is coloured but fishable and the air temperature is 3 degrees with a strong downstream wind.

Well done to our rods catching 6 fish yesterday, on Fishtweed only 7 fish were caught on entire system.

24th November 2011

SIX TODAY.

Ed (the dig)M continued where he left off at the beginning of the month by catching four today, he had Salmon of 12lbs,8lbs and another of 12lbs from the Clure and a 6lbs Grilse from the Bridge Pool.

Robin W decided to blow the cobwebs of his waders and landed a 5lbs Grilse from the Bridge Pool and Steve had a cast in the Bridge Pool and caught a 9lbs Salmon.

We also lost nine fish today!

24th November 2011

The river is 1' on the gauge and we are expecting a rise later as we had a lot of rain last night. The air temperature is 12 degrees!

23rd November 2011

ONE TODAY.

Well done to William E who again landed another Salmon, considering he only caught his first ever Salmon on Monday, he has managed to catch a Salmon on every day of his 3 days on the beat.

William caught a 8lbs Salmon in the top of the Upper Runners.

We also lost a few fish today.

23rd November 2011

The river is sitting at 9" this morning. The air temperature is back up to 10 degrees and we have a very strong south westerly wind.

22nd November 2011

TWO TODAY AND A KELT!!!

After catching his first ever Salmon yesterday, William E scored again today catching a 6lbs Grilse from the Bridge Pool.

John E (Williams father) caught a 16lbs Salmon from the Cauld Hole, then later he caught a 13lbs Kelt, also from the Cauld Hole.

Steve says the Kelt was in good condition and was released hopefully to return to the sea and pay us another visit in the future.

22nd November 2011

The river is sitting at 9" on the gauge this morning and the air temperature is 7 degrees.

21st November 2011

WE CLAIM ANOTHER VIRGIN!

Two fish today, congratulations to William E on catching his first ever salmon, an 8lbs bar of silver from the Clure. William also lost a fish this morning in the Bridge Pool.

Our second fish fell to Derek C, this time 10lbs of Tweed silver from the Bridge Pool.

We a starting to see a lot more fresh fish enter the beat and our new team of rods can't believe the numbers of Salmon in the beat.

21st November 2011

The river is sitting at 10" on the gauge this morning, cloudy and overcast with the air temperature of 8 degrees.

19th November 2011

NOTHING TODAY.

Another frustrating day and for some of our rods, a frustrating week. I fear I'm starting to sound like a stuck record! The beat again stuffed with fish, from bars of silver, to old kippers and everything in between, yet not taking the fly.

Steve said today, he watched pods of fish stop on the gravel bar outside the hut, then push forward, only for another pod of fish to arrive 5 minutes later.

If anyone knows a good wig maker, they could make some money from Steve as I don't think he has any more hair to pull out!

19th November 2011

The river is 1'8" and dropping on the gauge this morning after dropping back from 3'1" yesterday. The river looks to be clear of leaves and fish are splashing around in the pools.

It is a lot cooler this morning with the air temperature at 5 degrees.

18th November 2011

ONE SEA-TROUT.

One Sea-Trout today for Stan M, a 4lber from the Bridge Pool.

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and as I crossed the Tweed downstream of Galashiels my heart sank as I saw the river was a dirty chocolate colour, but I was reassured as I dropped down the hill from Clovenfords and saw the Upper Tweed was high but not dirty.

Our team of rods were struggling with leaves fouling the hook, but were in good spirits. The river was continuing to rise and after lunch Stan landed his Sea-Trout but as time passed the river began to turn coloured and soon became un-fishable.

We did however manage to view a pod of fish seek refuge from the dirty water and pull into the clean water flowing from the Walkerburn itself. Four of us stood and watched from no more than 6' away one of the wonders of nature. A large hen Salmon being courted by 5 or 6 cock Salmon and even some Sea-Trout joining them to see what was going on.

To see such a thing, more than makes up for a poor days fishing.

18th November 2011

The river is 1' on the gauge and rising and the air temperature is 13 degrees!

Hopefully this little flush of water will switch the fish on.

17th November 2011

BLANKETY BLANK.

Another frustrating day, the one fish we did manage to hook, got off!

Steve says the Bishop's was boiling today with fish, but not one took the fly.

I think we have a new strain of fish in the river, 'B*#=!?D FISH!!!

17th November 2011

The river is sitting a t 8" this morning and the air temperature is 8 degrees.

16th November 2011

A BLANK TODAY.

Nothing for the book today, we still have the beat stuffed with fish, yet not one of our rods had a single pull.

Frustrating is putting it mildly.

16th November 2011

The river is sitting at 6" this morning and it is cooler with the air temperature, 6 degrees.

15th November 2011

ONE TODAY.

We had one today for Andrew B, a 12lber from the Weaver. The fish were quiet today but our team managed to shake hands with a couple of fish.

It was a little cooler today with an easterly breeze, but the temperature still held at 8 degrees. This time last year it was snowing.

15th November 2011

The river is sitting at 9" on the gauge this morning, overcast and an air temperature of 8 degrees.

14th November 2011

ONE SEA-TROUT.

We had one Sea-Trout today, a 4lber from the Clure for Tom M.

Our team of rods had good day practicing involuntary catch and release, so much so, they did it on 10 occasions!

It seems that the fish in the beat are now switching on and are taking the fly (at last).

14th November 2011

The river is sitting a 10" on the gauge this morning and it is slightly cooler with the air temperature at 7 degrees.

12th November 2011

AT LAST.

We finally managed to bank some fish after a frustrating 2 1/2 days for our team.

Arnold S catching a 14lb Salmon (pic below) from the Bishop's and Shane M had a frantic 2 hour session in the Bridge Pool, hooking 7 fish, but only succeeded to land 2, a 5lbs Grilse and a 9lbs gleaming silver Salmon.

One of the fish Shane lost was an estimated 25lber, but it managed to get in the fast water and the rest is history.

3 fish for the day is most welcome, but it does not reflect on the shear numbers of fish in the river.

12th November 2011

The river level this morning is 1'6" and rising after heavy rain last, the air temperature is already 10.5 degrees.

Whilst driving home from the beat last night the air temperature never dropped below 9 degrees even when crossing the highest points on the A68. Normally I would expect close to freezing at the least.

It's also worth noting that only 46 fish were caught on the Tweed system yesterday.

11th November 2011

OBSCENE.

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and to have a cast as we had a rod spare. The number of fish splashing around in the beat was obscene, we saw a couple of 30lbs+ fish as well as 20lbs+ fish and pods of fresh grilse but yet again, they would not readily take the fly. Shane M managed to 'shake hands' with a few fish. Whilst others didn't even get a pull.

After lunch it was as if someone flicked a switch and the beat went very quiet with just the odd fish showing. I think by the end of the season Steve will be bald, he is so frustrated at all these fish which refuse to play the game.

11th November 2011

The river is sitting at 11" on the gauge, it is overcast an mild again this morning.

10th November 2011

TALES OF WOE.

No fish for the book today, but plenty fish lost. Our rods and Steve just can't believe how many fish are in the beat. It is simply an amazing site to see so many fish moving in the beat and on their way to spawn.

10th November 2011

The river is sitting a 8" on the gauge, overcast and the air temperature is 12 degrees. Whilst standing outside the hut, awaiting the arrival of our new rods, Steve said he has saw at least 25 fish and that our November run of fish has started.

9th November 2011

TWO TODAY.

A 5lbs Grilse for Andrew R from the Bishop's Pool and another 5lber from the Bridge Pool for Jamie (full name to follow). We have a lot of fresh silver grilse moving in the beat today so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

9th November 2011

The river is sitting at 11" on the gauge and it is overcast and the temperature is 9 degrees again.

8th November 2011

ONE TODAY.

One today, a 15lber caught by James H from the Bishop's pool. We lost 4 or 5 fish today.

8th November 2011

The river is sitting a 1' on the gauge this morning and it is overcast and misty, air temperature is 9 degrees.

7th November 2011

TWO TODAY.

Two fish today, a 5lbs Grilse for James H from the Bishop's and a 15lber for Andrew R from the Weaver.

Our rods had challenging conditions today, this morning they suffered with ice forming in the rod rings, once the temperature rose we had bright blazing sunshine and crystal clear water, then as the sun dropped so did the temperature causing har (mist/fog) to form on the water.

7th November 2011

The river is sitting at 11" this morning and we have a very hard frost. We have a new team of rods this morning and they are all ready set up and are raring to go.

5th November 2011

13 TODAY, YES YOU READ IT RIGHT!

We had an excellent day today, with the river dropping to a height that holds up the fish added with the much cooler temperatures, a good days fishing was on the cards.

Ed (the dig) M leading the way again with 8 Salmon/Grilse, a 14lb,12lb and a 5lber from the Clure, a 5lber from the Gooselandale, another 5lber from the Cauld Hole, then a 6lb,5lb and a 51/2lber from the Bridge Pool.

Michael R had 3 Salmon, two 8lbers and a 10lber from the Bridge Pool.

And last but not least, Steve once again handed the rod from Robin W landed two Salmon, a 10lber and a 8lber from the Bridge Pool.

Steve reports that every pool must have 50-60 fish in them, a lot of large hens and a lot of fresh grilse that have arrived later than normal.

As yesterday the tactics were very fast sinking lines and flies with a hint of blue in the dressing.

Roll on Monday!

5th November 2011

The river is sitting at 11" on the gauge this morning and we have had a very hard frost. These conditions are just what the doctor ordered, well hopefully for Peter and Phillip.

SIX TODAY.

Ed (the dig) M led the way today with five Salmon, a 12lber from the Cauld Hole, a 12lber from Gooselandale, a 5lber from the Weaver,a 12lber from the Bridge Pool and a 11lber from the Bishop's. Two of these fish had to be dispatched, one fish had a torn gill and the other was deeply hooked and bleeding badly so the most humane thing to do was to kill them.

Our sixth fish was caught by Steve, who again was handed the rod from Robin W and proceeded to catch another 12lber from the Bridge Pool.

The winning tactics today were a very fast sinking line and a conehead tube with red, black and a touch of blue in the dressing.

4th November 2011

The river is sitting at 1'1" this morning and it is overcast and still warm and humid.

With the river sitting at a perfect height and a few days of settled weather forecast prospects are looking excellent, I hope someone tells the fish!

I have been doing some number crunching regarding the river height during October and the average water height was 2'2" which Steve tells me is unheard of.

3rd November 2011

THREE TODAY.

2 fish for Ed (the dig) M today, a 12lbs Salmon from the Bishop's and a 8lbs Sea-Trout from the Bridge Pool. Ed also lost a estimated 20lbs + Salmon that he hooked in the Clure and the fish took him through the Gooselandale, then the Cauld Hole and finally managed to slip the hook in the bottom of the Upper Runners, this fish was a gleaming bar of silver.

Our third fish was caught by Steve, he was given the opportunity of a cast from Robin W and fourth cast Steve hooked and landed a gleaming 10lbs Salmon from the Bridge Pool.

All our rods witnessed a large pod of very clean fish entering the Bridge Pool this evening and I hope this will start to silence some of the 'profits of doom' on some of the internet fishing forums saying that the run of salmon is a couple of months early and all the back end fishing is finished with only kippers and diseased fish left in the river.

3rd November 2011

The river is sitting at 1'2" but we are expecting a rise as we have had heavy rain all night an it is still raining this morning. It is still mild, almost clammy and virtually no wind.

2nd November 2011

ONE OF EACH.

John E caught two fish today, a 10lbs Salmon from The Clure, followed by a 5lbs Sea-Trout from the same pool. John also lost a couple of fish today and Patrick W lost one in the Bridge Pool, after the frustration of seeing all these fish over the past three days he said it was nice to lose one!

2nd November 2011

The river is 1'6" on the gauge and is dropping, a bit cooler and overcast this morning.

1st November 2011

NOTHING TODAY.

A blank day today, although John E did manage to 'shake hands' with fish on three occasions.

I went up to the beat today to visit our rods and to have a cast. I have never seen so many fish in the Bridge Pool, literally fish showing everywhere, almost like the Varzuga river in Russia, but the fish did not want to take the fly. We went through the fly box and fished with intermediate to hi-d lines, all to no avail.

I suppose that's why they call it fishing and not catching.

1st November 2011

The river is sitting at 2'3" This morning and we have bright sunshine.
