2 fish lost today, David P lost a fish in the Clure after it swam straight towards him.

Dom F lost another fish in the Bridge Pool.

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse...

As forecasted, the river has risen to 2' 3" and turned dirty.

The river is 1' 5" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 10°C (50°F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

Dull and overcast this morning and the very strong wind has eased.

We had very heavy rain last night, so we are expecting the river to rise.

6th October 2022

Small but perfectly formed...

A nice 4lbs Grilse for Alan W from the Bishops.

Unfortunately for Alan, when playing his fish he got the Caberston Diving Competition underway and went for a dip.

Steve scored him a 7 but awarded an additional bonus point for landing his fish afterwards.

Dom F landed a 3lbs Sea-Trout in the Bridge Pool.

Dom also lost a much bigger fish that ran downstream, went around the bridge support and the rest is history.

In the afternoon Dom landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout in the Bishops and also lost another.

Difficult conditions today in the very strong wind. The river is still carrying some colour.

Air Temp is 10°C (50°F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

Funny story of the Day...

Earlier this morning, Steve thought he spotted someone fishing in the Bridge Pool.

Steve jumps into the Kawasaki, rushes down there to discover that it's a plant pot with a tall shrub inside that had lodged on the small island at the top of the pool.

30th October 2021

Early Doors...

With the river sitting stubbornly at 6' 6", remaining coloured and still raining, our rods decided to call it a day and head for home.

It is very much an unknown for us to be washed off for 3 consecutive days.

The rain stopped not long after lunchtime and it was nice to see some sunshine.

The river is starting to rise again from this mornings rain and the forecast for Sunday is for another downpour.

Oh Joy.... and the clocks go back, so we get an extra hour..... of more rain.

29th October 2021

Nothing Today...

Our 2 rods gave it a try for a couple of hours when the river dropped back to 6' 9" on the gauge.

David T did manage a nice brownie, so we know fish can see the fly.

We have had heavy rain for most of the day, causing the river to rise again and was up to 7' 3" and becoming more coloured when we called it a day.

All eyes on the gauges.

29th October 2021

As a cautionary note to anyone fishing the beat in the near future, following this weeks flood.

A lot of our riverbanks will be very soft and potentially unstable and undercut.

Likewise some of once familiar pools may have changed or may have submerged debris in them.

As always, please use a wading staff and wear a lifejacket.

Steve will keep you informed of any potential dangers that become apparent as the river level drops.

After rising to around the 10' last night, the river is 7' on the gauge this morning and is falling. The river has turned from a dirty brown to a milky grey "roadwash" colour.

Air Temp is 11°C (52F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54F)

Fishing is on hold until the river drops enough for Steve to assess the riverbanks.

28th October 2021

Update...

As of 15:00, the river was well over our gauge at 7' 6" and is estimated to be well over 9' and the heavy rain continues.

Hard to believe that the river was well below summer level last month.

28th October 2021

Washed Off...

The river is 7' on the gauge and rising.

The river is very dirty, full of leaves, trees and god knows what else.

It is still raining very heavy this morning.

As always in this situation, our rods will be offered some trout fishing on a local stillwater at our expense. We supply all the tackle for the day.

Or they can enjoy the warmth of the fire with plenty tea, coffee and biscuits in the hut.

27th October 2021

Nothing Today...

The conditions got the better of us today.

The river came up to 2' 9" on the gauge and turned dirty with a lot of leaves and branches coming down in the strong downstream wind.

Derek S did get an offer, fishing the sides in the Bishops, but it didn't stick.

The river has dropped to 2' 3" (17:30) and the forecasted heavy rain hasn't arrived as yet.

All eyes on the gauges for tomorrow.

16th October 2021

Early Doors...

Our team left the river early today, a combination of low water, lack of fish and long journeys to be made, being the deciding factors.

Steve even isn't having a cast, instead he is making a new rod rack.

That alone speaks volumes.

The beat will be well rested for our new team on Monday.

Nothing Today...

With the drop in both Air and Water temperatures, we thought prospects were looking good, especially after seeing some fish showing themselves outside the hut this morning.

How wrong were we, not so much as a touch. Yes we could do with some water and we had bright sunshine all day, but come on, it's the middle of October.

Tomorrow will be better.

Getting us underway again this morning was Team A, with Greta A landed a 12lber from the Clure.

Alan W landed a 6lber from the Bridge Pool and a 2lbs Sea-Trout from the Cauld Hole.

Dom F landed a 6lbs Sea-Trout in the Upper Runners, which gave a very good account of itself, along with a 4lbs Sea-Trout in the Bishops.

Last but by no means least, Nick S landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout from the Bishops.

We have had foul weather today with monsoon like rain and near gale force winds.

This has caused the river to rise rapidly this afternoon and the river is, as of 17:30, 2' 6" rising and very dirty.

Hopefully it has cleared enough to be fishable in the morning.

A squeaky bum moment for Dom when his fish went under the Bridge into the beat below, but under Steve's guidance, he managed to get it back under the bridge, land it and after weighing, it was safely returned.

Dom also landed both of our Sea-Trout, a 2lber from the Bridge Pool and a 4lber from the Clure.

Tales of woe for Alan W who lost a good fish in the Weaver after a good tussle.

Keith B lost 2 fish in the Clure.

Lots of plucks and pulls to keep you alert, but nothing sticking.

As forecast, the weather deteriorated this afternoon but our team stuck it out and came back in at close of play looking like drowned rats.

Two today...

Taking all the glory today, Patrick W landed 2 fish.

Patrick landed a 9lber in the Cauld Hole and a 26lber from the Bridge Pool which made a good account of itself using the fast water to it's advantage.

Well done Patrick and Thank you to Brian E for the pictures

26th October 2020

The river is 2' 2" on the gauge and falling.

Air Temp is 8°C and Water Temp is 9°C

A light downstream breeze at the moment and the river is carrying just a tinge of colour. There are still some leaves in the river but nothing like Saturday.

24th October 2020

Fish Soup to Leaf Soup.

After yesterday's catches, we had high hopes for today.

We had to contend with a very strong downstream and heavy rain, that was the good part, the river was stuffed with the autumn curse....Leaves!!!

Having to constantly do a flick cast in an attempt to rid your fly of a leaf, only for another leaf to become attached when casting was becoming tiresome.

By lunchtime, the river had came up a couple of inches.

Back on the water after lunch and the wind had dropped and the rain had stopped but the leaves got a lot worse, even using single hooks, nearly every cast and swing was spoiled.

We now had branches and various other bits of rubbish coming down and it became apparent the river was now rising rapidly and started to colour.

This didn't stop us putting 3 fish in the Catch Book though.

Dan T landed our first fish, a 4lber from the Weaver.

David X landed our second, a 12lber from the Clure.

Yours truly, landed our third, a 16.5lber from the Bridge Pool.

At close of play the river was up to 3' 5" on the gauge.

Scott H landed a 6lber from the Clure.

The river is 1' 4" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 7°C and Water Temp is 9°C

22nd October 2020

One Today...

One for Steve today, a 6lber from the Bridge Pool.

Tales of woe for Jim W who hooked a big fish in the Bishops.

Jim's fish then decided to leave the Bishops and head to the Clure and then into the top of the Gooselandale taking Jim to nearly empty on his reel, giving him no choice but to follow the fish.

It then decides to head back upstream, through the Clure and back into the Bishops, Jim once again in tow....

Then it decides to do it all over again.

This goes on for nearly half an hour and then the inevitable happens, it's off!!!

Jim's words " I thought I'd hooked a seal "

A great story for him to tell of the "one that got away."

22nd October 2020

The river is 1' 5" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 9°C and Water Temp is 10°C

Another good day for fishing.

21st October 2020

Rubber Hooks...

Another blank for us as our team can't get the fish to stay on.

Dudley H lost a fish in the Bishops and another in the Cauld Hole.

David S also lost a fish in the Cauld Hole.

That's not counting the brief encounters of a couple of headshakes, then off.

21st October 2020

The river is 1' 9" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 8°C and Water Temp is 10°

Overcast with a very slight breeze.

Steve's words "a perfect day for fishing"

20th October 2020

Tales of Woe...

Some days, it's just not meant to be.

Dudley H lost a fish in the Clure after having it on for a good while. Dudley said if he had landed it, it would have been the biggest fish he has ever landed.

David S also lost a fish in the Clure.

Ken F also lost a fish in the Bridge Pool.

The river came up to the 2' mark but has dropped back to 1' 11" at close of play.

Lots and Lots of fish running today.

20th October 2020

Has anyone left their life jacket with us?

It is an Englands Life jacket with the CO2 canister missing and was inside a Morrisons carrier bag.

Also as a heads up, Walkerburn and the surrounding villages are now operating a reduced speed limit of 20 mph, this includes Galashiels.

Please be aware.

20th October 2020

The river is 1' 6" and is rising but running clear.

Air Temp is 8°C and Water Temp is 9°C

Nice and overcast with just a slight breeze.

Lots of fish showing this morning.

19th October 2020

2 Today...

Getting things underway today was David S with a 9lber from the Weaver.

Our second fish was landed by Dudley H, a13lber from the Bishop's.

Tales of woe for Ken F who lost a fish in the Clure.

We are expecting a rising river, we didn't get the heavy rain but we have had drizzle all day, however it has been raining heavy to the West of us.

Typical when the river is in perfect order...

19th October 2020

The river is 1' 3" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 8°C and Water Temp is 9°C.

Wet and overcast this morning.

The team are getting stuck in as we might have a rising river later on.

17th October 2020

9 Salmon and 2 Sea-Trout...

Top rod today was Peter T landing 4 fish.

Peter landed a 20lber and two 6lbers from the Clure and a 15lber from Shaws.

Scott H landed a 25lber and a 3lbs Sea-Trout from the Clure, followed by a 10lber from Shaws.

Thank You to Ladislav P for the Pictures.

Frank G landed a 6lber and a 5lber from the Clure.

Steve landed a 9lber from the Bridge Pool.

Our final Sea-Trout was landed by Ladislav P, a 3lber from the Weaver.

17th October 2020

The river is 1' 5" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 7°C and Water Temp is 9°C

Nice and overcast with a slight breeze.

16th October 2020

One Today...

Thankfully Neil C put an end to our dry run with a 14lber from the Bridge Pool.

After Tony's swim yesterday, his son Sam, decided to go for an unintended dip today in the Clure!!!

Gents I think you are taking the "to catch a fish, you must become the fish" a bit far!!!

16th October 2020

The river is 1' 8" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 7°C and Water Temp is 8°C

Cloudy and overcast this morning.

Steve's blood pressure is up as virtually every beat around us landed fish yesterday!!!

15th October 2020

Nothing today...

We had high hopes today as we saw a good number of fish this morning but other than a couple of brief encounters for Neil C in the Clure, that was it.

This afternoon it was like the fish switched off and put their heads down.

To add insult to injury, Tony D went for an unexpected swim in the Bridge after slipping on a stone. After a hot bath and a change of clothes, Tony was back on the river.

You can't keep a good man down.

15th October 2020

The river is 2' on the gauge and falling after reaching 2' 5" last night.

Air Temp is 7°C and Water Temp is 10°C

The river is still carrying some colour but is clearer at the sides.

14th October 2020

Nothing Today...

We have had a slowly rising river all day, and getting dirtier as it went.

We did have the odd pluck and pulls, but they didn't come to anything.

We have saw running fish so we wish them well on their journey.

14th October 2020

The river is 2' on the gauge and rising.

Air and Water Temp is 10°C

The river is carrying quite a bit of colour this morning and we still have the NE wind, thankfully not as strong as yesterday.

Challenging conditions for our team today.

13th October 2020

When the Wind blows from the East...

A blank for us today.

This morning the fish were no where near as visual and we took it that they had moved on in the higher water or were keeping their heads down.

The rain varied between drizzle and heavy downpours on the gusty NE wind made casting a challenge, particularly when fishing on the right bank, when it was blowing in your face.

This afternoon the team tried different flies to no avail and we did see fish on the move. The river had dropped back 2" at lunch time but had risen by 1" at close of play.

Tomorrow will be better.

13th October 2020

The river is 1' 9" and holding steady at the moment.

Air Temp is 6°C and Water Temp is 9°C

We have a strengthening NE wind and it is raining quite heavy.

12th October 2020

3 Today...

On a very wet day we managed to add 3 to the catch book.

A 18lber for Arthur M in the Cauld Hole.

A 17lber for Roger C from the Clure.

Last but by no means least, a 8lber for Scott L in the Bridge Pool.

All our fish were caught in the morning session and then the fish switched off this afternoon. On checking the gauges the river is rising from today's rain, so that could be the reason.

The river is up nearly 2" from this morning.

12th October 2020

The river is 1' 2" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 8°C and Water Temp is 9°C

It is pouring with rain at the moment and we have a slight variable breeze.

10th October 2020

6 Today and a Lump among them...

Adding to his fish yesterday, Duncan R landed a 5lber in the Weavers

On his first visit to Caberston, Nigel G landed a 5lber from Shaws that was as clean as a whistle. Nigel also lost a good fish at the net in the Clure.

Also on his first visit to Caberston, Gary K landed a 7lber in the Weaver.

Now on John G who has enjoyed his first 3 day visit to Caberston.

On Thursday John lost 2 fish, today John lost 3 fish, one in the Weaver, one in Shaws and one in the Bridge Pool !!!

But John kept at it and the Salmon Gods smiled.

John landed 3 fish in the Bridge Pool, a 10lber, a 12lber and a beast of a fish weighing 35lbs !!!

John's knees were knocking enough when playing his big fish and when the fish rolled on the surface and wrapped the line around its head John though it was game over.

But Steve was on hand, our 2 way radios are worth their weight in gold, under Steve's guidance, John hung on and the fish rolled again, this time unwrapping the line and it was to John's great relief when the beast slid into Steve's net.

The fish, a large coloured cock, was weighed and was bang on 16 Kilos which converts to 35lbs.

Thank you to John G for the picture.

A fish of a lifetime and the biggest of congratulations to John G on its capture.

All fish returned, well done everyone.

10th October 2020

The river is 1' 4" on the gauge.

Air and Water Temp is 8°C

We have a brisk NW breeze.

Steve had everyone out of the blocks early and John G has practised his involuntary catch and release in the Weaver already!!!

9th October 2020

One Today...

All the honour goes to Duncan R today with a 18lber from the Clure which made a very good account of itself.

Tales of woe for Gavin L who lost a fish just before landing it in the Bishops.

I've not been able to say this for a long time but we have seen fish in every pool, we just need a couple of inches off the gauge to slow them up.

9th October 2020

The river is 1' 5" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 6°C and Water Temp is 8°C

The strong downstream Westerly is back with us.

8th October 2020

One Today...

After a long drought at Caberston for Dennis P, this morning he got the monkey off his back with a 15lber from Clure.

Tales of woe for John G fishing for the first time at Caberston.

John hooked into a big fish in the top of the Bishop's, after playing it for a while in the top of the pool it decided to make a searing run to the bottom of the Bishop's, with that much line out the inevitable happened, the bugger got off.

To add insult to injury, John later hooked into another big fish in the Clure. John had his fish ready for landing and while un-clipping his net, the fish rolled on the surface... and the bugger got off.

8th October 2020

The river is 1' 9" on the gauge and falling.

Air Temp is 7°C and Water Temp is 10°C

A slight breeze this morning, much improved from yesterday.

7th October 2020

Nothing today...

We started with high hopes after seeing fish this morning, but it wasn't to be.

The strong downstream wind made casting challenging and it also put a big ripple on the river, something which Steve never likes as he believes it puts the fish down.

7th October 2020

The river is 2' on the gauge.

Air and Water Temp is 10°C.

We have a strong downstream breeze and we have seen a good few fish this morning.

6th October 2020

Update...

Dom F came good and got a fish to stick, Dom landed a 6lber in the Gooselandale this evening.

Blankety Blank...

A cheque book and pen for us today, our team are seeing fish but as of yet, they are unable to tempt them.

Dom and Nick are going to give it another hour this evening.

6th October 2020

The river is 2' 6" on the gauge and falling.

Air Temp is 10°C and Water Temp is 10°C

We have a downstream breeze and the river is still carrying a bit of colour in the middle.

5th October 2020

Update... (18:30)

A Sea-Trout...

A 3lbs Sea-Trout for Nick S from the Bishops and Dom F lost a big fish in the Bishops after a good scrap, it came off just before it was beached. Grrrrr

Nothing Today...

Other than a brief encounter for Dom F in the Bridge Pool when stripping his fly in to re-cast, nothing to report today.

2 of our team are fishing on this evening, so we might have something to report later.

5th October 2020

The river is 3' 3" on the gauge and falling.

Air Temp is 11°C and Water Temp is 10°C

The river has a beer like colour but clearer at the sides so Steve has our team concentrating on the corners and edges of the river.

4th October 2020

Storm Alex...

After a full day of rain yesterday, as predicted, we had a big river last night which peaked at just over the 7' mark on the gauge and is currently (10:00am) running very dirty.

The river level is now falling and we expect a good 2' - 3' drop by tomorrow.

The water height won't be an issue, it will be the clarity.

Fingers crossed for tomorrow.

3rd October 2020

2 Today...

In what can only be described as filthy weather conditions today, Edwin B offered not one, but two glimmers of sunlight.

Edwin landed a 10lber and a 7lber from the Clure.

The river is on the rise, slowly at the moment, it was 1' 1" a close of play, but given the rain, we are expecting a big water tonight.

Thankfully we have a Sunday for it settle ready for our team on Monday.

3rd October 2020

The river is 10" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 9°C and Water Temp 9°C

We have a blustery down stream wind and it is "raining very heavily" that's not how Steve worded it but you get my drift.

2nd October 2020

Nothing Today...

Not for the want of trying but the bright sunshine had the fish keeping their heads down with only the odd one seen all day.

In traditional salmon fishing sarcasm, tomorrows forecast is heavy rain and blowing a hoolie!!!

2nd October 2020

The river is 11" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 5°C and Water Temp is 7°C

A hard frost this morning with thick haar on the water. It was -3°C when Steve opened up but the sun is burning through and the temperature is rising.

Our team is raring to go.

1st October 2020

4 Today...

Today we welcomed a new team who are fishing Caberston for the first time.

Today's top rod honours go to Bill T who landed a 10lber and a 8lber in the Bridge Pool.

Claire T landed a 7lber in the Clure.

Last but by no means least, Edwin B landed a 6lber in the Bishops.

Not a bad way to start your first visit.

Well Done everyone.

1st October 2020

The river is 1' on the gauge and rising.

Air Temp is 8°C and Water Temp is 10°C

31st October 2019

2 Today...

A challenging day today with the bright sunshine, but that didn't stop David T catching a 20lber early on in the Bridge.

The river seemed very quiet but we fished on until the sun went off the water and Tom C was rewarded with a 10lber from the Bridge Pool.

31st October 2019

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 6C (43F) and Air Temp is -1C (30F)

Hard frost and clear blue sky this morning.

30th October 2019

3 Today...

A fish each for our 3 rods today.

Heaviest fish goes to Eric R with a 16lber in the Clure.

Joint second with a 10lber each for Iain M in the Bishops and Brian E in the Clure.

It's always good news when all our rods catch.

A full team for the next 3 days.

30th October 2019

The river is steady at 1' (30cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 7C (45F) and Air Temp is 1C (34F)

Cold and Foggy this morning.

29th October 2019

2 Today...

It's amazing the difference a bit of cloud makes.

Getting things underway this morning was Brian E with a 13lber in the Bishops.

This afternoon it was congratulations for Iain M, landing his first Tweed Salmon, a 8lber in the Bridge Pool.

Iain also had an offer in the Clure.

Tales of Woe for Eric R who connected with a large fish this morning in the Bridge Pool.

It swam upstream, it swam downstream and all Eric could do, was hang on.

It then swam off !!!

29th October 2019

The river is 1' (30cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 7C (45F) and Air Temp is 4C (39F)

28th October 2019

A Blank...

As predicted, the conditions beat us, blazing bright sunshine and low clear water.

Other than a very brief offer for Eric R in the Clure.....

Diddly Squat.

28th October 2019

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 5C (41F) and Air Temp is -2C (28F)

We are down 1 rod as Keith B has succumbed to the lurgy. Get Well Soon Keith.

It's going to be a challenge over the next few days as we have low, very clear water and bright sunshine to contend with.

26th October 2019

Nothing Today...

Tales of woe again with Phillip P winning the Caberston Conservation Award.

Phillip lost a fish this morning in the Bridge Pool, then lost another this afternoon in the Weaver.

New front teeth required me thinks...

26th October 2019

The river is 1' 2" (36cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 8C (46F) and Air Temp is 4C (39F)

A cold Northerly again this morning.

25th October 2019

Tales of Woe...

We managed to lose 2 fish today.

Ron A lost his in the Clure this morning and not wanting to be outdone, Phillip P lost his fish this afternoon, also in the Clure.

Grrrrrr.

25th October 2019

The river is 1' 2" (36cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 7C (45F) and Air Temp is 1C (34F)

Frosty this morning with a cold Northerly wind.

24th October 2019

One Today...

A 5lber today for Phillip P from the Clure.

Our catches are not giving a true picture of the number of fish in the beat.

24th October 2019

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 9C (48F) and Air Temp is 10C (50F)

23rd October 2019

Another Blank...

Not wanting to sound like a broken record, but it is the same story, fish showing all around the beat, but we can't tempt them.

Hopefully Steve gets to wet his net tomorrow as we have 4 rods fishing.

23rd October 2019

The river is steady at 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 9C (48F) and Air Temp is 10C (50F)

A brisk downstream wind this morning.

22nd October 2019

Another Blank...

We are not short of fish in the beat, but getting the buggers to take the fly, is just not happening at the moment.

If catching Salmon was easy, would we do it???

22nd October 2019

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 9C (48F) and Air Temp is 8C (46F)

21st October 2019

Nothing Today...

Nothing today for our 2 rods and not many fish showing themselves.

Tomorrow will be better.

21st October 2019

The river is 1' 8" (51cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 8C (46F) and Air Temp is 2C (36F)

The river has dropped and cleared nicely, so we are back in the game.

19th October 2019

Up She Comes...

The river was just inching up this morning and we were seeing running fish and then bang.

The river went into full flood, turning dirty brown and stuffed with leaves.

It is 3' 2" (97cm) at the moment (17:00)

Sigh...

19th October 2019

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) and rising on the gauge.

Water Temp is 9C (48F) and Air Temp is 8C (46F)

Heavy rain at the moment.

18th October 2019

1 Today...

A day of frustration for our rods today, this afternoon we had plenty fish showing themselves, but getting them to take the fly just wasn't happening.

These are a mix of hard running silver fish and slower running fish in various states of colour.

Sam C saved us from a blank with a 12lber from the Bridge Pool, so well done to Sam.

Tales of woe for Dom F who lost a fish in the Bishops.

18th October 2019

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 9C (48F) and Air Temp is 7C (45F)

We are expecting the river to rise during the day.

17th October 2019

Better than Nowt, a Sea-Trout...

Dom F spared us a blank today with a 7lbs Sea-Trout from the Bridge Pool.

Steve said the river went very quiet this afternoon.

Hopefully the overnight rain will stir them up for tomorrow.

17th October 2019

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp is 8C (46F) and Air Temp is 3C (37F)

A fresh morning with a fresh team of rods.

16th October 2019

No Takers...

It has been one of those days.

Plenty of fish showing in all the pools, which is great to see, especially after the lack of fish over the past few years.

But we couldn't get them to take the fly.

A new team tomorrow.

16th October 2019

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) and steady on the gauge.

Water and Air Temp is 10C (50F)

Nice and overcast again this morning with rain forecast later.

15th October 2019

2 Today...

Not content with catching a 20lber yesterday, Hamish E raised the bar again, catching a very well fed 29lber this morning in the Weaver.

Thank you to John W for the photographs.

David S added to his 2 fish yesterday with a 12lber from the Clure this afternoon.

David also lost a fish in the Gooselandale.

John W lost a fish in the Bishops.

Keep them coming...

15th October 2019

The river is 1' 9" (53cm) on the gauge and falling.

Water temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 7C (45F)

Nice and overcast this morning.

14th October 2019

3 Today...

Top rod honours go to David S with 2 fish today.

David landed a 22lber in the Bridge Pool and a 8lber in the Cauld Hole.

Hamish E also opened his account on his first visit to Upper Caberston with a 20lber from the Bishops.

William W lost a fish in the Bishops.

Well done Men.

14th October 2019

The river is 2' (61cm) on the gauge and falling.

Water Temp is 9C (48F) and Air Temp is 5C (41F)

Plent of mist and overcast this morning for our 5 rods.

12th October 2019

Nothing Today...

Tales of woe for Duncan R who lost a fish in the Gooselandale today which meant nothing for our catch book.

We have been blighted with bright sunshine and have seen very few fish.

This didn't stop the lads enjoying their 3 days with us.

More rain forecast for Sunday so all eyes will be on the gauges for Monday.

12th October 2019

The river is 2' 1" (64cm) on the gauge and falling.

Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 8C (46F)

The water has cleared but it is sunny this morning.

11th October 2019

Another One...

With us starting the day at 3' 1" (94cm) and a coloured river, we weren't expecting much.

It then rose rapidly to 3' 5" (1.04m) and became even more coloured, this coupled with a very strong gusting downstream, made things challenging to say the least.

Not for Duncan R, who was still basking in the glory of his first ever Salmon yesterday,

Duncan landed a 4lbs Grilse in the Clure this afternoon.

There's no stopping him now.

The river has dropped back to 2' 11" (89cm) at close of play.

11th October 2019

The river is 3' 1" (94cm) on the gauge, rising and coloured.

Water and Air Temp is 9C (48F)

We could really do with the water levels settling as the catches posted from the upper river don't reflect the number of fish seen.

10th October 2019

1 Today...

All the glory for Duncan R today, Duncan landed a 20lber in the Gooselandale which was his first ever Salmon.

What a way to get off the mark!!!

Great stuff Duncan.

The fish have been a lot more visual this afternoon.

10th October 2019

The river is steady at 2' 2" (66cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp and Air Temp is 10C (50F)

We still have a strong downstream wind and it's raining this morning.

9th October 2019

Another Blank...

Not so much as a touch for our 2 rods today.

Where have the fish gone?

A new team of 4 rods tomorrow, so fingers crossed.

9th October 2019

The river is 2' 5" (74cm) on the gauge and falling.

Water Temp and Air Temp is 9C (48F)

The strong downstream wind is still with us.

8th October 2019

Nothing Today...

Other than a couple of very brief offers for Cecil D in the Weaver and the Runners, nothing for Steve's catch book.

Steve reports that one pool has a lot of fish showing in it, but getting them to take is a different matter.

8th October 2019

The river is 3' (91cm) on the gauge and falling.

Water Temp and Air Temp is 10C (50F)

We have a very strong downstream wind which is rattling through some heavy showers.

7th October 2019

Nothing Today...

It was always going to be an uphill struggle today with the high coloured water and only 1 rod fishing.

Give David P his due, he fished all day and had a couple of offers which didn't stick, those that did stick were brown trout.

The river is 3' 6" (1.07m) clearing and falling.

Tomorrow will be better...

7th October 2019

After rising to 7' (2.3m) yesterday, the river has dropped back to 4' 2" (1.27m) on the gauge.

Steve reports that it is fishable at the edges and we will be targeting the slack water off the bends of the river.

Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 11C (52F)

5th October 2019

1 Salmon & 2 Sea-Trout...

Nick S continued to enjoy his visit to Upper Caberston with 9lbs Salmon in the Cauld Hole and a 4lbs Sea-Trout from the Clure.

Shaun M on his first visit landed a 8lbs Sea-Trout and lost another 2 fish in the Bridge Pool.

Tales of woe for Dom F who dropped 3 fish in Bishop's and 1 in the Bridge pool.

The beat was very quiet, fish wise this morning but after lunch they woke up and we have seen fish running hard all afternoon.

Looking at the weather forecast for Sunday, we could be high on Monday...

5th October 2019

The river is 1' 9" (53cm) on the gauge and has cleared to a beer like tinge as Steve puts it.

Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 9C (48F)

4th October 2019

A Tale of 2 Rivers...

An eventful day for Dom F and Nick S who were meant to be fishing the Tyne, only to find it as a 5 foot raging, manky torrent.

Discovering we were 2' 3", dirty but clearing and after a couple of phone calls, they were pleased to be on their way to Caberston.

Even more pleasing was that on his first visit to Caberston Nick S landed a 14lber in the Bridge Pool and Dom F on his second visit to Caberston landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout in the Clure.

I love a happy ending, well done gentlemen.

4th October 2019

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge and is a very dirty brown after last nights heavy rain.

Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 9C (48F)

We have a very brisk upstream wind and a mix of rain and heavy drizzle, not a good day to be on the water.

On the upside, some good catches on the river yesterday.

3rd October 2019

Oh Dear...

As we had no rods fishing today, Steve and I decided to have a cast.

We started with the river at 1' 1" (33cm) on the gauge.

Water Temp 7C (45F) and Air Temp 1C (34F)

Another sharp frost with a light SE breeze.

It was nice and cool and overcast and we thought if we landed 5 yesterday in blazing sun, we were in with a good chance today.

Oh how wrong were we...

We did catch a fish each this morning, Steve in the Weaver and me in the Bridge Pool.

But erm, cough, erm, they got off!!!

I hope Dudley H is not reading this.

2nd October 2019

5 Today...

A productive day on the river given that Steve and I thought it would be tough going in the bright sunshine.

As Alan H and Ian H tied today with 2 fish each, Ian takes the glory as his brace were the heaviest.

Ian landed a 15lber and a 6lber in the Bridge Pool and Alan landed a 12lber in the Clure, followed by a 6lber in the Bridge Pool.

Our rods finished early for the journey home so Steve had a cast just outside the hut in the Weaver and landed a 6lber.

Well done Team.

2nd October 2019

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge and falling.

Water Temp is 8C (46F) and Air Temp is 2C (36F)

We have our first frost of the season and it is bright, fresh and sunny this morning.

1st October 2019

3 Today...

Top rod today with 2 Salmon was Neil S, fishing for the first time at Upper Caberston.

Neil landed a 15lber and a 11lber in the Bridge Pool this morning.

Neil S in the Weaver Pool

Adding to yesterdays tally, Alan H landed a cracking grilse of 6lbs in Shaws this morning.

Alan's grilse.

Tales of woe for Ian H this morning who hooked a powerful fish on the dangle in the Weaver. As normally the case with fish hooked on the dangle, the bugger got off!!!

All things went quiet in the afternoon session as the river started to rise and the sun came out and was shining directly downstream.

The river was 1' 7" (48cm) at close of play.

1st October 2019

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge. The gauges upstream are starting to show a rise from the overnight rain.

Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 7C (45F)

Cloudy and raining this morning with a brisk NE wind.

31st October 2018

Nothing Today...

Another blank for us today, it is very much thin pickings until we get some water and with it, hopefully some fish.

31st October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 4C (39F). Air Temp is 1C (34F)

Cold and overcast this morning.

30th October 2018

Tales of Woe...

Nothing for the catch book today other than tales of woe for Eric R who lost a fish in the Bridge Pool.

The fish took just after his fly landed and swam upstream, then turned downstream and then stuck the middle finger up and left Eric with a slack line.

Graham M under Steve's watchful eye.

To add further to the tales, we are another rod down with Patrick W succumbing to the Lurgy and decided that after lunch the best place was back home with a Hot Toddy.

David T in the Cauld Hole.

We did have some rain today which just managed to inch up the river slightly, we are more interested in what is forecast for Friday/Saturday.

30th October 2018

The river is 8" (20cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 3C (37F). Air Temp is 1C (34F)

29th October 2018

1 Today...

Congratulations are in order today for David T who landed his first ever Scottish Salmon, a 14lber in the Cauld Hole. Well Done David.

Thank You to David T for the photograph.

Eric R had an offer in the Clure but nothing came of it.

We all wish Tom C a speedy recovery after being struck down with a chest infection.

29th October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 3C (37F). Air Temp is -4C (23F)

The fire is roaring ready for our new team.

27th October 2018

Early Doors...

The team decided that enough was enough and called it quits after lunch.

Understandable given the current conditions.

Is it 2019 yet?

27th October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 5C (41F). Air Temp is 1C (34F).

Our first taste of winter. Brrrrrrr.

26th October 2018

Another Blank...

Back up to the beat to visit our anglers and hoping for a change of fortunes for them, alas once again, nothing to report.

Brian E in Action.

Although the team were in good spirits and give a shrug of the shoulders and say "that's fishing."

Both Steve and I very much want our anglers to catch fish but the season is very much shaping up to be a poor one.

Julian B in the Weaver.

I'm starting to feel like a broken record but we very much need some water, and with it some fish. To put it into context, we have had one rise of significant water since April and even that disappeared as quick as it arrived.

Tomorrow will be better. (Have I already said that)

26th October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 8C (46F). Air Temp is 4C (39F).

We still have a brisk NNW breeze.

25th October 2018

A Blank...

Nothing today for our new team of rods other than a brief encounter for Patrick W.

On the up side we are starting to see fish.

Tomorrow will be better.

25th October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 10C (50F). Air Temp is 11C (52F)

We still have a strong NW breeze, but not as strong as the previous couple of days.

24th October 2018

2 Today...

With conditions near to identical as yesterday, I've got to admit I was expecting the same result as yesterday.

Thank the Lord that Neil S proved me wrong. Neil landed a 16lber and a 12lber in the Cauld Hole.

Well done Neil on your catch and to everyone else for sticking it out in the challenging conditions.

24th October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 10C (50F). Air Temp is 10C (50F)

We still have the very strong NW wind.

23rd October 2018

Nothing Today...

I flew up to the beat yesterday, that's literally, as the wind nearly made it a reality a couple of times.

It was so windy that some of the anglers sought the refuge of the hut because the wind at times, was strong enough to blow you off you feet whilst wading.

Even the Cows sought shelter.

It's bad enough having low, gin clear water and very little in fish numbers, but to be also blown off your feet is a low blow!!!

23rd October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 9C (48F). Air Temp is 10C (50F).

It is blowing a NW Hoolie, so much so that the rods in the rack are buckling over.

Oh Joy!!!

22nd October 2018

Nothing Today...

We need more water and with it, more fish. We have seen the odd ones but nothing like we would normally expect.

The wind got stronger this afternoon making casting very difficult for our team, they stuck it out till after 5 for no reward.

Sigh!!!

22nd October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 9C (48F). Air Temp is 6C (43F)

We have a brisk NW wind.

20th October 2018

2 Today...

Taking all the glory today was Ed the Dig who landed a 12 & 13lber in the Bishops.

We are still waiting on fish arriving in bigger numbers as it seems only the odd ones are moving at the moment.

20th October 2018

The river is 1' (30cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 10C (50F). Air Temp is 12C (54F)

Overcast this morning. Some good catches downstream of us yesterday so hopefully some have moved up overnight.

19th October 2018

A Cheque Book and Pen.

A Blankety Blank today. Things got off to a disappointing start with 2 of our team having to leave early due to illness. We all wish Mrs. H a speedy recovery.

That left us with 3 rods, myself included. Conditions have been perfect, grey and overcast, a light breeze and a decent water height.

We covered the water to the best of our ability and never saw a single fish all day.

Tomorrow will be better.

19th October 2018

The river is 1' (30cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 7C (45F). Air Temp is 3C (37F).

A light breeze and overcast this morning.

18th October 2018

2 Today...

Getting things underway this morning was yours truly with a nice well fed 13lber from the Bridge Pool.

This afternoon Ed the Dig landed a 5lber in the Weaver and lost another in the Bridge Pool.

18th October 2018

The river is 1'2" (36cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 6C (43F). Air Temp is 2C (36F).

A nice frost this morning with a light breeze.

17th October 2018

Same again...

A repeat of yesterdays catch. Leading the way today was Dominic F with a 20lber from the Bridge Pool and a 3lbs Sea-Trout from the Cauld Hole.

Also opening his account today was Tony D with a 12lber from the Bridge Pool.

17th October 2018

The river is 1'3" (38cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 8C (46F). Air Temp is 9C (48F).

We have a slight South Westerly breeze this morning.

16th October 2018

Two of One and One of the other...

After being tormented with plucks and pulls earlier, John R took our heaviest fish of the day, a 15lber in the Clure.

Also adding to his tally was Dominic F landing a cracking Grilse of 5lbs in the Cauld Hole and a 3lbs Sea-Trout in the Weaver.

Thanks to Dominic F for the photograph.

Well done Gents.

16th October 2018

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 8C (46F). Air Temp is 7C (45F)

We have a brisk cross stream wind this morning.

15th October 2018

A Small Sea-Trout...

Nothing like Salmon fishing to dash your high hopes, after the big rise of water we were expecting a more productive result today, especially after reports on Sunday that lots of fish were running the Leithan Water, a tributary further upstream.

Steve did manage to wet his pen with Dominic F landing a 2 lbs Sea-Trout in the Weaver this morning so well done Dominic.

The river has fallen to 1' 9" (53cm)

Tomorrow will be better.

15th October 2018

The river is 2' (61cm) on the gauge and falling. Water Temp is 8C (46F) and Air Temp is a chilly 3C (37F)

A hard frost this morning and a very slight breeze.

We had our first proper rise of water over the weekend since late spring. All things crossed for this week.

13th October 2018

Nothing today...

Nothing today for our team other than plenty of Brown Trout.

The river had been steadily dropping down to the 2' (61cm) mark, but as expected, it is rising rapidly this afternoon with todays rain and is currently 2' 8" (81cm) at 17:00.

All we need now is for it to run off tomorrow to a nice height for Monday.

13th October 2018

The river is 2'6" (76cm) after rising to 3'6" (1.07m) last night.

It is coloured but fishable in the sides and in the slack water off the bends.

Water Temp is 11C (52F) and Air Temp is 12C (54F).

It is once again pouring with rain so another rise is expected.

12th October 2018

Another one...

Congratulations to Dudley H who managed to cast off his nickname of "Rubber Hooks" by landing a 6lber in the Weaver.

Dudley H in the Bridge Pool.

That didn't stop the lunchtime ribbing in the hut though, "more like 3lbs" and "by the time it was landed it was a Kelt,"

All good fun.

Arnold S & Jim W talk tactics.

Well for a change the weather forecast was correct and the heavy rain arrived just before lunch and was still coming down by the bucket load when left for home.

Heavy rain in the Tweed Valley.

The gauges are showing a much needed rise and with more heavy rain forecast for tomorrow, it could be finally be "Game On."

12th October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge but we are expecting it to rise.

Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 12C (54F).

We are expecting the weather to worsen as Storm Callum arrives.

11th October 2018

At Last....

A fish for the catch book at last.

Applause all round for John W who landed a 12lber in The Bishops.

Steve says he has seen more fish running this afternoon than he has seen in the last week.

No doubt they can sense the storm coming. The sky has turned black and it is pouring down.

All eyes on the gauges for tomorrow.

11th October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 13C (55F). Air Temp is 13C (55F)

Dull and Overcast this morning.

10th October 2018

Madness...

Not your usual heading but I've struggled to give an appropriate heading without using expletives.

Yesterday our team were battered with Gale force winds and heavy drizzle and rain.

Today the Air Temperature reached 21C (70F) with blazing sun, a light breeze and fly hatches all around.

It's the second week of October for Gods Sake!!!

Costa del Caberston

I felt for Mike H who was dressed in Neoprene Waders, I think on this occasion he was pleased that they were leaking.

Neil H in The Clure

Our team stuck at it, but once again nothing for the catch book. Like us, I don't think the fish know which way is up with the weather having such great swings of change.

Dennis P in The Bishops

You know the fishing is slow on various websites and blogs when they start posting pictures of wildlife....

Who am I to differ!!!

Just so we don't get comfortable, very strong Gales and torrential rain is forecast for Friday.

Oh Joy!!!

10th October 2018

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 11C (52F). Air Temp is 13C (55F)

We have a slight South Easterly breeze.

9th October 2018

Another Blank...

A dry net and pen for Steve today.

The wind has been horrendous making casting almost non existent, this also gave us another curse, leaves in the river.

Steve has seen fish moving through the beat, but not in great numbers.

On the bright side, we have water.

9th October 2018

The river is 1' (30cm) and rising. Water Temp is 10C (50F). Air Temp is 13C (55F).

We have a very strong downstream gale to spoil things.

A Very Strong Gale.

8th October 2018

Nothing Today.......But......

Nothing for our team today who fished in the very strong wind but... we have seen fish in various pools, which have been rarer than an omelette at breakfast (sorry inside joke).

No doubt the fish can smell fresh water in the river and with the upstream gauges showing a rising river, it could be game on tomorrow.

8th October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 10C (50F) Air Temp is 13C (55F).

We have a very strong downstream wind.

We are still waiting to see if the rain is going to give us a much needed rise of water, nothing as yet.

6th October 2018

Sigh...

Another blank today, low water, bright sunshine and a shortage of fish.

This time last year David P had a 18lber and two 16lbers in high murky water.

Rain is forecast for tomorrow so fingers crossed for next week.

6th October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water temp is 8C (46F). Air Temp is 4C (39F)

5th October 2018

Nothing Today...

Not for the want of trying by David P, another blank day with us not seeing as much as a fin.

Sigh!!!

5th October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 10C (50F). Air Temp is 9C (48F).

We have light rain and a slight NW breeze.

4th October 2018

Nothing Today...

Another dry net for Steve today. David P had the beat to himself and covered as much water as he could for not so much as a touch.

We need water and plenty of it. Until it arrives, which it will, it's a needle in a haystack.

4th October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water temp is 10C (50F) Air Temp is 14C (57F)

3rd October 2018

Another Blank...

A much better day weather wise but the river seemed dead.

Our rods decided to call it quits early in the afternoon.

The fact that Steve didn't even have a cast, unfortunately, speaks volumes.

3rd October 2018

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge. Water and Air Temp is 9C (48F)

A very light breeze which makes a welcome change from blowing a Hoolie.

2nd October 2018

A Blank...

Another challenging day on the river with a very strong and cold wind making the pools look more like the North Sea than the Tweed.

Ian H

Alan H

Our team of 2 rods stuck at it but once again the Salmon Gods were looking the other way.

Tomorrow will be better.

2nd October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp and Air Temp is 9C (48F)

It is blowing a downstream hoolie at the moment. Oh Joy!!!

1st October 2018

Two today...

Taking all the glory today was Alan H who landed both our fish. Alan landed a 10lber in the Bridge Pool this morning and a 9lber in the Clure this afternoon.

I detect a lot of sibling rivalry for tomorrow.

1st October 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 7C (45F). Air Temp is 2C (36F).

We have a hard frost this morning with a light downstream wind.

31st October 2017

Nothing Today...

Nothing for our team today and it's not with the lack of fish because there was plenty of them tormenting us.

That's Salmon fishing.

Tomorrow will be better...

31st October 2017

The river is steady at 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge.

Air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

A big difference from yesterday.

30th October 2017

2 Today...

David S was top rod today landing both of our fish, David landed a 12lber in the Clure this morning and a 7lber in the Weaver this afternoon.

Close but no cigar awards for David T in the Clure and also Eric R in the Runners.

30th October 2017

The river is 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge.

Air temp is -1C (30F) and water temp is 6C (43F).

Our first hard frost of the season, the fire is roaring and the kettle is boiled ready to welcome our new team of rods.

28th October 2017

Blowing a Hoolie...

A very challenging day on the river with a very strong wind that almost made it unfishable.

Every time you raised your rod the wind would have your line out the water.

The team did manage to put something in Steve's catch book, a 6lbs Sea-Trout for Jamie E from the Island Pool.

Iain W lost a fish in the Weaver and Guy P lost a fish in the Clure.

Hopefully it will have all settled down for Monday.

28th October 2017

The river is 1' 5" (43cm) on the gauge.

Air temp is 13C (55F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We also have a very strong NW wind.

27th October 2017

All change...

Back up the beat today and it was noticeably cooler, just what the doctor ordered, I would have thought.

The fish had other ideas and they were not showing themselves like yesterday.

Top rod yesterday Brian E.

Brian E lost a fish at the Bus Stop after it being on for 5 minutes then it all went slack.

Jaime E had 2 offers, one of which was in the Gooselandale when he was checking how his fly was swimming and a fish came up from the depths, sucked his "Willie" (quiet at the back) Gunn and then promptly spat it back out!!!

Julian B in the Clure.

We don't know if it was the change in temperatures that had put the fish off or they had moved on.

What is it with the salmon being constantly inconsistent.

27th October 2017

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge.

Air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

26th October 2017

3 Today...

Top rod today was Brian E landing 2 Salmon.

Brian's 1st, a 16lb in the Bishop's and his 2nd, a 15lber in the Weaver.

Congratulations to Julian B, fishing Caberston for the first time and landing a 20lber from the Weaver.

Iain M lost a fish in the Clure and Patrick W also lost a fish in the Bishop's.

Iain M also opened this years Caberston Swimming Gala, much to the amusement of Patrick W.

Steve scored Iain with a 6.

26th October 2017

The river is 1' 9" (53cm) and falling, air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

It is overcast at the moment with a very slight breeze.

A new team of 6 rods today.

25th October 2017

At last...

The drought is over thanks to Russell N who landed and returned a 10lber in the Cauld Hole.

It was nearly 2 today but unfortunately Neil S lost a big fish in the Clure.

Our team of rods have really stuck in over their 3 days trying to get a fish. I just wish Mr & Mrs Salmon would be more obliging for their efforts.

25th October 2017

The river remains a 2' (61cm) on the gauge.

Air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

24th October 2017

Frustration...

Back up to the beat today to visit our rods, only to find history repeating itself.

Fish showing throughout the beat but not taking the fly.

The "A" Team in the Bishop's.

This is really frustrating both Steve and I as we both passionately want our rods to catch fish and it's not for the want of trying.

They are changing tactics and flies but have nothing to show for it.

Simon N waiting for an offer.

Historically the water is at an awkward height for us but not so much as an offer is pure frustration.

Tomorrow will be better.....

24th October 2017

The river 2' (61cm) and steady on the gauge.

Air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

A slight SW breeze and it is raining at the moment but is forecast to stop around lunchtime.

23rd October 2017

The Drought continues...

Nothing today from a river full of fish.

Neil S did get a couple of offers and one finally stuck, but after a minute his fish came out of the water, did a somersault and the rest is history,

Change of tactics for tomorrow.

23rd October 2017

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge and falling.

Air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

21st October 2017

A Dry Pen...

Well the catch drought continues and a dry net is bad enough but Steve is starting to fear his catch book pen has dried up also.

With the exception John R's big fish it has been a very lean week, more frustrating is that we are seeing a lot of fish but they just aren't interested.

We have tried big flies, little flies and fished the depths to the surface.

Grrrrr.

21st October 2017

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

A slight NE breeze at the moment.

The river gauges further upstream are showing rising levels.

20th October 2017

On the Run...

Back up to the beat to visit our team of rods and unfortunately another dry net for Steve today, plenty of fish being seen and at times you could watch them piling over the Cauld.

John D and Dudley H in the Bishop's.

We really need a foot off the gauge and a couple of frosts to slow the fish down, the current conditions have the fish bombing through.

The sun came out pushing the air temperature to 16C, nice to sit in, but it doesn't help our team putting a fish on the bank.

David H enjoying the warmth.

We are forecast more rain tomorrow, just what we don't need.

On the up side, we are seeing great numbers of fish running the river, a lot more than previous years.

Salmon 1 - 0 Anglers

20th October 2017

After dropping back to 2' (61cm) yesterday, this morning we are back to 2' 5" (73cm) and rising. It is running clear at the moment.

Air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

We really need the river to drop in both height and temperature.

19th October 2017

Blankety Blank...

Nothing for Steve's catch book today, plenty of fish but at the moment they aren't interested in our offerings.

We did manage a few hook ups, but body parts don't count.

It will be better tomorrow.

19th October 2017

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge and falling.

Air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

We have a light SE wind and a new team of rods.

18th October 2017

A Dry Net...

A dry net for Steve and pure frustration John R who dropped 5 fish today.

Some of John's fish were on for a few seconds, others a bit longer.

One of those days.

Grrrrrr!!!

18th October 2017

The river is 2' 5" (74cm) on the gauge. Air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

The wind has switched to a light upstream breeze and it is raining at the moment.

The one thing we don't need is more water.

Nothing Today...

I went up to the beat today to visit our 2 rods, the drive up over the hilltops in the tail end of Storm Ophelia made for an "interesting" drive.

My first port of call was to congratulate John R on his big fish yesterday.

It became apparent when we were all talking about John's fish over lunch that a mistake had been made converting the the weight of the fish from Kg to Lbs.

John's fish was 15Kg on the button, which converts to 33lbs and not 38lbs as previously stated.

(I think Steve ran out of fingers and toes when doing the maths) Ha Ha

Thanks to Neil C for the photographs.

Back to today, the high water and very strong wind made things hard going this morning with neither of our rods getting an offer. Thankfully things started to settle down this afternoon.

Neil C and John R in the Clure.

Still no offers when I left for the journey home but when I rang Steve at 18:00 he told me that John R had lost 2 fish in the Bridge Pool. John also reported seeing a big pod of silver grilse in the 1 - 1 1/2 lbs bracket.

Hopefully the river level will continue to fall and give us a better chance tomorrow.

17th October 2017

The river is 3' 10" (1.17m) on the gauge and falling. The river is carrying a lot of colour at the moment and Steve is going to try the Gooselandale and the Bridge Pool.

Air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

Arghhh, we had a great head of fish in the beat, Steve says a lot more than we have seen in a good few years.

Bugger!!!

16th October 2017

A Monster....

Well what can I say, a beast, a monster or a crocodile. I don't thinks words can describe the fish caught by John R today.

John hooked, played, landed and returned a 33lber!!!

John hooked his fish in the Cauld Hole and it took him downstream to the Hut!!!

John's fish was weighed and measured and witnessed by Steve, Neil C and John himself.

Congratulations John and I look forward to shaking your hand tomorrow.

Photographs to follow....

16th October 2017

The river is 2' (61cm) on the gauge and falling, air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 12C (54F)

Very still and overcast this morning, the calm before the storm.

14th October 2017

A Funny Old Game...

It's a funny old game this Salmon fishing lark, yesterday in a howling gale, lashing rain and a rising river, we catch fish.

Today in a light breeze and a falling river, nothing, in fact when speaking to Steve earlier in the day we had barely seen a fish until late on when a couple of small pods were seen running hard.

I suppose it's ironic that we look for certainty in an uncertain sport that is Salmon fishing.

14th October 2017

The river is 2' 11" (89cm) and falling, air temp is 13C (55F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

Thankfully the wind has weakened to a light breeze and the water has cleared.

Fingers crossed.

13th October 2017

A Tad Breezy...

Well the above is very much an understatement, I went up to the beat today and in some of the exposed pools you struggled to keep on your feet, never mind make a cast.

At this time of year the wind brings with it another anglers curse, leaves and lots of them, at times they were like blizzards in the gusts.

On top of that it rained and rained which had the river rising steadily from 2' 6" (76cm) this morning to 3' 6" (1.07cm) by 17:00 and starting to colour up.

Understandable that our rods called it quits early, fishing is for nourishment, not punishment.

The final nail in the coffin was that it is Friday 13th.

Ahhh but hang on a minute, this is Upper Caberston, we don't let little things like that stop us, Oh No, in fact we added 2 fish to our catch book.

John W added another fish to his tally, landing a 5lbs Grilse in the Bridge Pool and Arnold S took our biggest fish of the day, a 9lbs Sea-Trout from the Cauld Hole.

Well done Men.

If anyone is listening, that's quite enough wind and water, thank you.

13th October 2017

After a lot of rain in the West last night, the river is 2' 6" (76cm) and rising.

The air temp is a balmy 16C (61F) and the water temp is 12C (54F)

We also have a very strong wind to contend with.

12th October 2017

2 Sea-Trout...

It was always going to be a challenge today with the high water level but that didn't stop John W claiming top rod.

On his first cast with a new rod. Bang, a 4lbs Sea-Trout from the Gooselandale. John's second Sea-Trout was a small but perfectly formed 1 1/2 lber in the Clure.

Sitting in the corner with a pointy hat award goes to Dudley H who managed to lose a Sea-Trout in the Bridge Pool and a Salmon in the Bishop's.

Still getting his hooks from Dunlop's. He He.

The river is steadily dropping and is 2' 6" (76cm) (17:30)

12th October 2017

After reaching 5' (1.53m) last night the river is 3' 4" (1.02m) and falling this morning and is carrying a tinge of colour but is fishable.

The air temp is 9C (48F) and the water temp is 10C (50F)

A new team of rods this morning.

11th October 2017

Oh Dear...

Well another fish lost, this time it was Neil H in the Gooselandale. If would have been Neil's first salmon and to add insult to injury, it was a chrome bright grilse of around 6lbs.

Thinks have gotten so bad for the team that Sandra changed the packed lunch biscuits from Kit Kats to Breakaway's.

Much to everyone's amusement.

A great bunch of lads, just a shame nothing would stick for them.

The river is 3' 6" (1.07m) dirty and rising. (17:30)

11th October 2017

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge and rising, air temp is 14C (57F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We have had a lot of rain to the West so we are expecting a rise of water.

10th October 2017

A Sea-Trout...

Chris E spared our blushes today landing a 4lbs Sea-Trout in the Clure.

Our team managed to drop 4 fish today, Steve's comments were BEEEP, BEEEEEP, BEEP, BEEP!!!!

10th October 2017

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) on the gauge and rising, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We have a very brisk downstream wind and heavy rain.

Hmmm, don't like the weather in Scotland, give it 10 minutes !!!

9th October 2017

Tales of Woe...

Nothing for Steve's catch book today, Dennis P lost a fish in the Weaver and Ken P had a handshake in the Clure.

Plenty of fish showing in the beat, getting them to take was another matter.

9th October 2017

The river is 1' 6" (46cm) and steady on the gauge, air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

It is overcast and we have a light breeze, all in all a great day to be on the river.

7th October 2017

All quiet...

Nothing for Steve's book today, although we did see a few fish, nowhere near as many as the previous few days.

David P did get an offer but it came to nothing and with only having 1 rod fishing the entire beat, the odds were stacked against us.

A full squad on Monday.

7th October 2017

The river is 1' 11" (58cm) on the gauge and rising, air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We also have a brisk downstream wind to contend with.

6th October 2017

3 Today...

David P continued to add to his tally landing 2 today. A 16lber and a 18lber, both from the Clure.

As we only have 1 rod fishing, Steve had a cast and landed a 7lber in the Weaver.

All returned.

6th October 2017

The river is 2' 9" (84cm) on the gauge and falling, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

5th October 2017

Never say never...

With the river still rising up to the 5' (1.52m) mark, most ghillies and anglers would have sighed and retired to the bar.

Not at Caberston with Steve keen to get rods out and fishing the slack areas and sides.

David P being one such angler and after losing a fish earlier, lightning struck twice and he landed a 16lber in the Bridge Pool.

Well done David.

The river is falling and is currently 3' 6" (1.07m) at 18:00

5th October 2017

The river is 4' 9" (1.45m) and rising. Air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We are hoping for the river to start dropping in the next hour or so, then we are going to try the corners and back eddies.

Should have been here yesterday......Grrrrr

4th October 2017

4 Today...

Another 4 fish for Steve's catch book.

Neil M opened his account with a 14lber and a 4lber, both from the Bishop's. Neil also lost a fish in the tail of the Bishop's.

Not to be outdone, Douglas M also added another 2 to his tally, a 12lber in the Bishop's and a 15lber in the Clure. Douglas also lost a fish in the Cauld Hole.

It has been raining heavily all day and all of our fish were caught this morning, then this afternoon the river started to rise.

It is approaching the 2' (61cm) mark at 18:00 and starting to carry some colour.

Hopefully things will settle by morning.

4th October 2017

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge and rising, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

We once again have the very strong North Westerly wind and it is pouring with rain.

Just what we didn't want.

3rd October 2017

4 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout...

I went up to the beat today to visit our 2 Rods.

Well and truly stealing all of the glory, top rod today for Douglas M landing all of our fish.

Fish on for Douglas M

This morning Douglas landed a 16lber and a 12lber in the Bridge Pool, then after lunch Steve placed Douglas in the Clure and it wasn't long before he landed a 10lber and then shortly afterwards a 4lbs Sea-Trout.

Back you go...

Douglas then worked his way down to the Weaver and landed a 8lber, our first cock fish of the season.

Neil M in the Bridge Pool

Tales of woe for Neil M who hooked into a very large fish in the Cauld Hole. All the tell tale signs of a big fish, slow deep thump thumps and powerful taking of line. All Neil had to show for it was a very bent out hook. Bugger!!!

Steve has been receiving calls from beats below to say fresh fish are running the system.

3rd October 2017

The river is 1' 9" (53cm) on the gauge, air temp is 13C (55F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We still have a brisk North Westerly but not as strong as yesterday.

2nd October 2017

Blown Away...

Horrendous conditions today, it was windy enough to rock the Kawasaki side to side and the other by product was that the river was stuffed with leaves.

Our 2 rods stuck it out and we saw fish in various pools but nothing wanted to play.

The river is dropping and the wind is easing down.

Tomorrow will be better.

2nd October 2017

And so it begins...

The river is 2' (61cm) and rising, air temp is 14C (58F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

Our 2 new rods also have a gale force North Westerly to contend with.

Hopefully not a baptism of fire for them.

31st October 2016

One today...

One for the catch book today in tricky low water and bright sunshine.

John E landed a 12 lber in The Clure, John also lost a big fish in The Weavers as it took off upstream into The Runners.

Eric Le R also lost a fish in The Weavers.

Could have been 3 but 1 is better than none.

31st October 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

29th October 2016

Tales of woe...

Nothing for Steve's book today, we were blighted with sunshine that saw the temperatures up into the 20's and when it cloud over the temperatures then dropped like a stone.

Brian E lost a good fish in The Clure and Torquil C lost a Sea-Trout in The Cauld Hole.

Who would have thought we would be fishing in short sleeves at the end of October!!

29th October 2016

The river is 8" (20cm) on the gauge, air and water temp are 8C (46F)

Cloudy and overcast this morning.

28th October 2016

1 Today...

Apologies for the missing river condition report this morning, I left early as Steve's mobility scooter (The Mule) was poorly and needed me and the toolbox to get her running smoothly again.

We started the day with the river at 9" (23cm) on the gauge and the air and water temperature at 9C (48F)

I had just started to get the tools organized when the radio informed us that Jamie E had a fish on in the Island Pool and after 5 minutes he reported in that he landed and returned a 4 lbs Grilse. A good start

Top rod Jamie E

I had the Mule back in business and Steve and I took a test run up to the top of the beat to make sure all was well and Patrick W reported he lost a fish in The Clure after a couple of minutes as it kept swimming upstream towards him and he couldn't get line back on the reel quick enough.

Torquil C in The Clure

The fish at the moment seem to be following a pattern, they are very active, sploshing about in the pools until around 11am and then all quiet until around 4pm when the sploshing starts again.

Strange creatures....

27th October 2016

2 Salmon and a Sea-Trout...

A good day for father and son team Brian and Jamie E. Brian got things underway with a fresh 4 lber in the Bishop's, but was trumped by Jaime who landed a 25 lber in the Weaver.

Even better it was Jamie's first Tweed salmon.

Brian then followed with a gleaming little 1 lb Sea-Trout in the Clure.

Also worthy of a mention for all the wrong reasons was Patrick W, who become our second entrant in the Caberston Swimming Championship. Patrick lost his footing on the bank of the Bishop's and went head first into the river!!!

Steve give him a score of 7 for the dive!!!

Thankfully he is safe and well.

27th October 2016

The river is steady at 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp is a mild 12C (54F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

Cloudy and overcast with a strengthening downstream wind.

26th October 2016

Nothing today...

A dry net today for Steve, our rods have reported that there are plenty fish moving through but other than the odd tweak on the line, nothing stuck.

A full team of 6 rods tomorrow.

26th October 2016

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

Cloudy and overcast this morning.

25th October 2016

One today...

Back up on the beat today to visit our team of four rods. The drive up from home to the Scottish Border on the A68 had me driving in thick fog until the moment I crossed the border and dropped down the hill the weather changed to blue skies and bright sunshine.

It was much the same when I arrived on the beat, warm autumn sunshine, a light breeze and clear water may be a good recipe for fishing, but not for catching and our team had nothing to show for their efforts this morning.

The afternoon rotation had brothers Simon and Russell fishing the Weavers down to the Bridge Pool and it wasn't long before the radio crackled into life to tell us Russell had a fish on in the Bridge Pool.

It was good to see the Bridge Pool in shadow from the hill to the south and Russell just landing his fish, a 12llber.

Back she goes...

It wasn't long after that the radio crackled again and this time it was Simon "fish on" but moments later it was "fish off." When we came past Russell, we told him Simon lost one. "Good" was Russell's response with a chuckle. Brotherly Love.

It was also good to congratulate Janice H on her big fish yesterday and she found it all a bit embarrassing that she was the talk of the village. I have seen her pictures and it is a great fish and Janice is going to send me a copy of it when she returns home.

Janice H in The Clure

25th October 2016

The river is holding steady at 10" (25cm) on the gauge, air temp is a fresh 1C (34F) and water temp is 6C (43F).

A bit of haar this morning but it is looking like a bright sunny day.

24th October 2016

What a way to start the day...

You really don't get a better start to your fishing trip like this, Janice H on only her third cast in the Weaver, hooks a monster.

After a long battle and Janice ready to drop the rod, Steve jumped into the Weaver to make sure the fish was landed and what a fish.

Janice's fish measured 45" (114cm) long and around 15" (38cm) deep and has been given an estimate of 35 lbs. What a clonker.

Well done Janice.

Not wanting to let Janice steal all of the limelight, Simon N landed not one but two great salmon of 15llbs. His first one in The Clure this morning and his second in The Weaver this afternoon.

Well done Simon.

Roll on tomorrow.

24th October 2016

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge, air temp is 2C (36F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

A chilly morning with Steve having to de-ice his windscreen and the hut padlocks this morning.

22nd October 2016

A virginity lost...

A great day for Ed P who landed his first ever salmon, a nice and very treasured 4 lber from The Weaver.

The rest of our team has been teased all day by the fish moving and jumping at their offerings, but not taking them

Steve tells me the whiskey bottle has taken a hit in celebration of a first salmon and rightly so.

Well done Ed

22nd October 2016

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Cloudy, damp and misty or a normal Scottish autumn morning.

21st October 2016

Not for the want of trying...

Back up on the beat to visit our rods and the conditions were about as good as it gets, 1' on the gauge, cloud cover and a very gentle breeze.

Unfortunately the fish didn't think the same.

Ed P in The Clure

Although there was the odd pull of the line the fish were just not interested.

Matt C in The Cauld Hole

We could do with this batch of fish moving on or at least waking up.

21st October 2016

The river is 1' (30cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

20th October 2016

Bang, Bang.......Gone!!!

Nothing for the book today, the closest we got was Mark G having a fish on for a couple of minutes in The Clure, but the bugger got off. The rest of team were getting takes and after a couple of bang, bang headshakes they were gone.

20th October 2016

The river is 1' 1" (33cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

It is overcast at the moment and we are welcoming a new team of rods.

19th October 2016

4 Today...

4 for the book today with John R top rod with 2, it could have been 5 !!!

John landed a 5 lber in The Clure and a 12lber in The Bishop's, he also lost fish in the Island Pool, Bishop's and The Clure.

Neil C landed a 9lber in The Bishop's and as most of our rods left early Steve had a cast and landed a 12 lber in The Weaver's.

Not a bad day at the office.

19th October 2016

The river has dropped back to 1' 3" (38cm) on the gauge and is running clear, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp 8C (46F)

Steve's description this morning.... "perfect."

We just need the fish to do their part.

18th October 2016

Dirty, rising and full of leaves...

We started the day with the river at 1 '3" (38cm) and when I arrived to visit our team of rods, the river was up to 1' 6" (46cm) coloured but fishable and full of leaves. Not good.

Neil C in The Bridge Pool

During the afternoon the river continued to rise, became more coloured and was carrying even more leaves.

Roger F in The Bishop's

When I left for home the river was up to 2' (61cm) but holding steady.

When I rang Steve for the final report at 5:30, the river had dropped back to 1' 9" (53cm) and unfortunately for our team, nothing for the book.

Steve is hoping for the river to be in perfect condition by tomorrow morning.

18th October 2016

After rising to around the 1' 6" (46cm) last night, the river this morning is 1' 3" (38cm) and has a tinge of colour, we are expecting it to rise again after last nights rain.

Air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

17th October 2016

Tales of woe...

Nothing for the book today in bright sunshine and a rising river. John R lost a fish in The Clure which had him turning the air blue.

Roger F had a brief encounter in The Bishop's and this afternoon he got the Caberston Swimming Challenge underway after taking a dunking in the Cauld Hole, it didn't stop him fishing though, good man.

The river is now starting to rise quite rapidly so all eyes will be on the gauges.

17th October 2016

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

Cloudy and overcast this morning.

15th October 2016

One for the Ghillie...

With all but two of our rods leaving early this afternoon and on a rising river Steve spotted a fish nudging onto the gravel shelf outside of the hut and had a cast at it.

A few casts later he had it, a 26 lber and as Nigel A put it, "it had a tail like a miners shovel."

Jammy Git !!!

The river is slowly rising and at 17:30 it was 1' (30cm) on the gauge.

Roll on Monday !!!

15th October 2016

The river is 9" (23cm) and rising, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

Its raining this morning but it looks like the main bulk of it, is moving north of us.

14th October 2016

2 Today...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and on the drive up there I noticed an angler (who will remain nameless) fishing another beat wearing a mustard orange wading jacket, I thought to myself, that's the fishing buggered for a couple of miles !!!

When I arrived at the beat, the jungle drums informed me that Jim W landed and returned a 12 lber in The Weaver.

The team came in at lunch to be welcomed with a warm fire, hot soup and rolls. The banter in the hut is great with this group, Jim caught his fish on a fly recommended by Steve and he was now doing a roaring trade in the same fly.

The weather turned rather wet in the afternoon, but armed with the killer flies our team went out on the river with high spirits or was it the whiskey.

Jim W in the Bishop's

Dudley (No Pressure) H in The Clure

As the rods started to filter back into the hut at the end of the day, the radio crackled into life. John W had landed and returned a 6lber, again in The Weaver.

We were joined by the nameless angler in the orange jacket, we all thanked him for scaring the fish up to us.

A great bunch.

14th October 2016

The river is 8" (20cm) on the gauge, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp 9C (48F).

The air pressure is dropping and we have a wet and windy forecast.

13th October 2016

Nothing today...

A difficult day for our team of 6 rods with the fish keeping their heads down until the last hour when one of the pools burst into life with fish splashing everywhere.

Hopefully tomorrow brings a change of fortunes.

13th October 2016

The river has had a small rise to 8" (20cm) on the gauge, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

More rain is forecast with an upstream breeze.

12th October 2016

No takers...

Nothing for the book today, our 2 rods fished till the end, but they couldn't tempt one.

We have had a lot of rain and drizzle today, if it is enough to raise the river remains to be seen.

A new team of 6 rods tomorrow.

12th October 2016

The river is 6" (15cm) on the gauge, air temp 9C (48F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

We really could do with some water.

11th October 2016

Another 20....

One more for the book today, Ken P landed a 20 lber in The Weaver's.

Ken's fish kept returning to the fast water and he couldn't do anything with it but hold on, but under the guidance of Steve he successfully landed, weighed and returned his fish.

A new personal best for Ken, who this evening is grinning like a Cheshire cat.

Well done Ken.

p.s. Boys, you know you'll not hear the end of it !!!

11th October 2016

The river is 7" (18cm) on the gauge, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp 9C (48F)

It is very dark, overcast and raining this morning.

10th October 2016

The Jammy Git...

Apologies for the missing river report this morning, I left the office very early this morning to fish the beat.

I can tell you that we started with the river at 8" (20cm) on the gauge, a very fresh air temp of 3C (37F) and water temp 8C (46F). We also had a thick haar in the valley.

We saw the odd fish in the beat but they were nowhere near as visual as last week. It was blanks all round at lunch and the weather changed from thick haar to bright sunshine.

Myself and Steve headed to The Clure and I was first down (I wasn't making that mistake again) Steve followed me down and you guessed it, the jammy git hooked a fish. I ribbed him that "he hooked it up the ar$e" and he yelled "no it's in the nibbles" all the while old Jimmy chuckled from the opposite bank.

Steve thought it was a grilse at first as it wasn't giving much of a fight and then off it went. After a good tussle Steve landed a 23 lbs cock salmon which he returned.

I'm now starting to think if Steve fell in a puddle, he'd come out with a Salmon!!!

Jammy Git !!!

8th October 2016

One today...

A tough day as we were blighted with bright sunshine and clear water.

Our team kept plugging away and David P was rewarded with a 5 lbs grilse in the Bridge Pool.

The distance between 0 and 1 can be huge.

Cheers lads.

8th October 2016

The river remains steady at 9" (23cm), air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

7th October 2016

One of each...

I went back up to the beat to visit our team and I found them all smiling and being tormented by the fish.

David P opened his account with a 2 lbs Sea-Trout in The Weaver and Chris E landed a 5 lbs grilse in The Bishop's.

Chris E in The Bishop's.

We have plenty fish sploshing about but getting them to take is proving a challenge.

Is Dennis P smiling or is it wind !!!

7th October 2016

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

Steve's not happy, fish being caught above and below us.

6th October 2016

Tales of woe...

Tricky conditions today with bright sunshine and a strong upstream wind.

As Steve says "plenty of fish showing and moving but not many on the take"

We did have a couple that did take but we lost them, Ron M losing one in The Clure and David P losing one in The Weaver.

Keep at it men.

6th October 2016

The river has dropped slightly and is 10" (25cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

A new day and a new team of rods.

5th October 2016

No takers...

Another good fishing day but Mr. Salmon didn't fancy any of our offerings.

The fish were a lot more "visual" today and we hope they are more willing tomorrow for our new team of 6 rods.

5th October 2016

The river is holding at 11" (28cm) on the gauge, air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

Cloudy and overcast with an upstream breeze.

4th October 2016

A funny old game...

I went up to the beat today to visit our 3 rods.

It's a funny old game this salmon fishing lark, yesterday was bright and sunny with the occasional bit of cloud cover and fish showing throughout the beat.

Today we had cloud cover all day and apart from the easterly upstream wind, with 11" on the gauge conditions were as good as you could have hoped for.

Mr. Salmon thought otherwise, apart from a couple of residents, the fish were keeping their heads down. Eric W had knock and I got a brief pull on the line and that was it.

A funny old game indeed, but we aren't laughing.

4th October 2016

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge, air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

Cloudy and overcast this morning.

3rd October 2016

A great start...

3 fish today for husband and wife team Ron and Greta, Greta started things off this morning with a 10 lber and a 8 lber from the Cauld Hole and this afternoon Ron landed a 15 lber in The Clure.

Our 3rd rod Eric W landed a 2 lbs Sea-Trout in the Lower Runners. Eric is still out fishing so there may be more to report in the morning.

3rd October 2016

And so it begins...

Welcome to the official start of our 2016 season.

The river is 1' (30.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is a fresh 2C (36F) and water temp is 8C (46F). We have a very thick haar this morning.

The fire is on and the kettle is boiled.

1st October 2016

3 Today...

Another 3 for the catch book, Tom W started us off with 12 lber in The Clure. Paul L landed and returned a 14 lber in the lower section of The Bishop's and it's that man again, Mr Dickson had a 10 lber in The Weavers.

Well done men.

31st October 2015

Not again...

More tales of woe with us losing fish. Patrick W losing one in The Clure and another in The Bridge Pool.

David T lost 2 fish in The Island Pool, one of them after a ten minute fight and virtually on the bank.

Oh Bugger!!!

31st October 2015

The river is 7" (18cm) and steady on the gauge, air temp is a clammy 15C (59F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

30th October 2015

Anglers 2 - 5 Salmon...

Two for the book today, both landed and returned by John E, a 3lber in The Bridge Pool and a spanking 14lber in The Clure.

John has been fishing the Tweed for longer than he cares to remember and says his 14lber is the best conditioned Tweed fish he has caught, gleaming silver and could only have been in the river less than 36 hours. Well done John.

Close but no cigar awards for Hugh N losing 2 fish in The Bridge Pool, Patrick W lost a fish in the lower section of The Bishop's and another in The Bridge Pool and David T lost a fish in the upper section of The Bishop's.

Nearly 7 but 2 will do......

30th October 2015

The river is 10" (25cm) and rising with a slight tinge of tea colour, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

29th October 2015

Rubber hooks...

I went up to the beat today after missing my normal Tuesday visit as I was suffering with "Man Flu".

After what feels like an eternity of low water, it was fantastic to see 1' on the gauge. The fish must have been enjoying it as well, as Steve reported that fish had been splashing about on the beat this morning and we had lost 3 fish!!! Nick P lost a fish in The Clure, Patrick W lost one in The Bishop's and John E also lost one in The Clure.

During lunch our team told me that after the initial flurry of activity early on, things went quiet, had the fish ran through or were they just keeping their heads down?

John E and Nick P in The Bridge Pool

In the afternoon we did see a few fish in the upper part of the beat but John E continued our run of "rubber hook syndrome" and lost a fish in The Bridge Pool.

So 4 fish lost today, which if we had landed them and looking at the catches on Fish Tweed and Tweedbeats (19:30) we would have been top beat.

What is that saying...." it never rains but it pours "

29th October 2015

One for the Ghillie...

Steve gave it another go after speaking with him at 16:30 and fished on until dusk and landed and returned a 9lber in The Bishop's, Jammy Git !!!

At last we have some water, the river is 1'1" (33cm) on the gauge and is slightly "tea coloured", air temp is 11C (52F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

28th October 2015

Two in a row...

Nothing for the book today, our rods left early and Steve had an hour on the river but nothing to report other than Jamie E again practised involuntary catch and release and again it was in The Bishop's.

It has been raining all day and the gauges further upstream are rising, can someone down Berwick way make sure the plug is in as we don't want a repeat of the river draining away quickly!!!

28th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 12C (54F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We have light rain at the moment with very low cloud and harr, looking at the rainfall radar the bulk of the rainfall is to the west of us, just where we want it.

27th October 2015

Tales of woe...

Normally you would have thought a good cloudy day, as apposed to bright sunshine in low water would have had us seeing more fish moving in the beat, nothing could be further from the truth.

In fact speaking with Steve he said the river went dead, they have only just started to see fish in the failing light.

Jamie E managed to practise involuntary catch and release, losing a large cock Salmon in The Bishop's.

We are expecting rain tonight........will it be enough?

27th October 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 9C (48F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

We have good cloud cover at the moment.

26th October 2015

Like father, like son...

Our team of rods were blighted with bright sunshine today which had them shedding layers.

This didn't stop them getting in on the action though, Brian E landed a personal best Sea-Trout, a cracking 13lber in The Weaver.

Brian's Sea-Trout.

Also putting his mark in the book was Jamie E (Brian's son). Jamie landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout in the top of Shaw's.

Steve has said that once the sun was setting a lot more fish were starting to show and with cloud cover forecast for tomorrow, hopefully things will continue to improve.

26th October 2015

This is 3" (7.5cm) on the gauge, the river rose to just over 1'6" (46cm) on Saturday but has dropped back very quickly.

Air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

24th October 2015

Nothing today...

Another blank day for our reduced team of rods with 2 rods heading home early.

The good news is the river after initially rising slowly, is now rising quickly and is now 1' (30cm) and rising.

Roll on Monday.

24th October 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 13C (55F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

It is raining and we are expecting a much needed rise in the river, Crook Inn gauge further upstream is showing 9" (23cm) and rising.

23rd October 2015

Nothing today...

Nothing for our team today and Steve tells me that they haven't seen as many fish today, the ones they have saw are very coloured.

We are expecting some rain tonight and tomorrow and Steve reports black clouds out to the west of us.

23rd October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Thankfully we don't have the gales of yesterday.

22nd October 2015

Against the odds...

I went up to the beat today, the drive was "interesting" shall we say, being battered with strong winds and at times, blizzards of leaves.

When I arrived on the beat, conditions had not improved and the wind was being channelled down the Tweed valley, whipping up "white horses" from the river.

It was hard enough standing on the riverbank in the gusts, let alone trying to cast whilst keeping your footing on a slippery bottomed river.

David H "reading the river"

After seeking shelter in the warmth of the Bothy and enjoyed one of Sandra's packed lunches, our team of rods headed back out into the "wind tunnel".

Simon N in The Weavers

After following Steve's advice on fly choice, Simon N hooked into a fish in The Weavers, his fish launching itself nearly 3' into the air before swimming back at him, making Simon frantically strip back line to keep his fish under tension. After giving a good account of itself Simon landed, photographed and returned a 9lbs Sea-Trout, our first of the season. Well done Simon.

It just goes to show, even in a low, leaf filled river with a howling gale, there are rewards to be had.

We have also saw a good few fishing running the beat today and Russel N (Simon's brother) saw some small fresh grilse running The Bridge Pool.

22nd October 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

Steve says it is blowing a hooley and they have had some heavy showers rattling through this morning, not a day for the faint hearted.

21st October 2015

Nothing today...

The difficult run continues, our rods left mid afternoon after trying very hard during their 3 days with us.

Steve had a try for an hour in The Bridge Pool as he saw a couple of fish, but they are having non of it.

There are still no signs of a change in the river levels from the rain last night.

21st October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 14C (57F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

We had rain through the night but it has yet to change the river levels. We do have a strong downstream wind which will know doubt put some leaves in the river.

Oh joy !!!

20th October 2015

Nothing today...

I went up to the beat today, when I spoke with Steve this morning for the river height and temperatures etc. we had good cloud cover.

However on my drive up as I crossed the border into Scotland I was greeted with clear blue skies and sunshine. When it is coupled with this persistent low water you can not help but let out a deep sigh.

Graham H, Matt C, Louis A and Mark G

I enjoy going up to the beat to meet our rods, come rain or shine or feast and famine, I just wish at times that salmon fishing wasn't such a cruel mistress and I say mistress because mother nature is not playing nice.

20th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

19th October 2015

One today...

Graham H opened his account today with a 6lber in The Clure, also close but no cigar for Louis A who lost what is believed to be a good Sea-Trout in The Weavers.

Some nice numbers are being reported further downstream, bring on the rain please.

19th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Very foggy this morning.

17th October 2015

Nothing today...

Nothing for our team of rods today, a couple of them headed home yesterday and 3 left earlier today leaving John W who fished until the very end, unfortunately nothing to report.

17th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 7C (45F).

16th October 2015

Plugging away...

I was back up on the beat today to visit our team of rods and I found them still smiling and making the best of a river out of sorts. Pete R had a brief encounter with one of the "residents" in The Weaver just as I was driving up the track to the Bothy.

Again conditions were perfect apart from not having any water, the boys were all commenting on how the extra inch of water we had yesterday made all the difference to the flow in the pools.

A very shrunken Bridge Pool

However this didn't stop our team plugging away and Andy R landed and returned a 5lbs Grilse in The Bishop's.

Pete R also had another 2 brief encounters, one in The Clure and one in the middle of The Bishop's.

Another one for the book.

16th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 7C (45F).

A foggy start again this morning.

15th October 2015

At last...

Finally a fish, a 7lbs Grilse for Pete R in The Clure. I am especially pleased not just because it's a fish for the book but more so for Pete as he had a bit of bad luck last year.

He suffered a really bad back spasm whilst on The Bridge Pool and spent nearly a week in hospital.

After returning his fish Pete had a 2 1/2lbs Grayling on the very next cast.

Well done Pete.

At last...A fish!!!

15th October 2014

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge and slowly rising. Air temp is 1C (34F) and water temp is 6C (43F)

14th October 2015

Nothing today...

It didn't take long for the fog to disappear this morning and leave us once again with blazing sunshine, this resulted in the fish keeping their heads down so yet another blank day.

To try and break the current deadlock I have just received a delivery of micro flies, you couldn't get any further away from what we would be expecting to be using at this time of year i.e. 1" tubes, but when in Rome...

A micro fly on a 5p piece.

Also of interest is the Crook Inn river level gauge which is further upstream of us and is showing an increase of 4" (10cm) and rising.

14th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 7C (45F).

A chilly and foggy start this morning.

13th October 2015

Missing piece...

I went up to the beat today to visit our anglers and when they came back to the Bothy for lunch they were all in good spirits and were saying they have saw a lot more fish today compared to yesterday.

It gets more and more frustrating for me and Steve when our rods, some of which have fished at Caberston much longer than I have owned it, are being "dealt a poor hand" my mother nature.

John R fishing beside a very exposed croy in The Bishop's

Conditions were virtually perfect, overcast and cool, a very light breeze that made casting enjoyable, the only missing piece of the puzzle is that we need water.

Another blank day for us and all of this lack of water is apparently to do with the warm water in the pacific known as El Nino.

I put El Nino in the Scottish version of Google Translate, it came back as "Bloody Annoying" !!!

13th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

12th October 2015

The drought continues...

Another blank day, blazing sunshine until we had a heavy shower at 16:30, but it only lasted half an hour.

It's encouraging but also frustrating seeing the catches in the lower river, we desperately need rain.

12th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 8C (46F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

10th October 2015

Nobody home...

As our team of rods called it quits yesterday, Steve had a couple of hours until the call of a cold pint in the rugby club got the better of him.

Nothing to report I'm afraid.

10th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and the water temp is 7C (45F)

9th October 2015

Groundhog day...

I was back up on the beat today and as the heading suggests we are still suffering with very low water which is preventing fresh fish from reaching us and is also preventing the fish in beat which are just sulking, from moving on.

As you can see from the above pictures (top) Hole, (middle) Weavers and (bottom) Shaws, we have a very shrunken river.

John R trying to make the best of things took one of our new trout kits to try and tempt some Grayling, all to no avail.

Our team of rods have decided to call it a day and took down their rods and are heading home a day early after breakfast.

I can fully understand given the conditions and I offer my sincerest apologies as the one thing that Steve and I have no control over, lets us down.

On other matters, my phone was red hot this morning regarding the catch of 5 Salmon and 9 Sea-Trout reported by the Nest beat yesterday, which added to their reported catch last week of 5 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout giving them a total of 10 Salmon and 10 Sea-Trout over the last 6 fishing days of October

This has now been amended to a total of 2 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout for October. A technical glitch me thinks.

As Steve has the river to himself tomorrow, he is going to have a cast and see if he can tempt anything.

When life throws you Lemons........... Learn to make Lemonade.

9th October 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 6C (43F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

8th October 2015

Another blank...

Nothing today for our team of rods. The river has been dropping back to 2" on the gauge and we have had blazing sun all day, the boys where fishing in short sleeves and some even took a nap on the riverbank to save their energy to fish when the sun goes off the river.

I have just finished talking to Steve the Ghillie (18:22 ) and the boys are just coming back in now and sadly nothing to report.

Bloody weather !!!

8th October 2015

The river is 3" (8cm) on the gauge, again a small rise last night but the water is dropping away just as quick. Air temp is 7C (45F) and the water temp is 8C (46F)

A new team of rods today and floating lines, long leaders and small flies are still the order of the day.

7th October 2015

Nothing today...

Another disappointing day for the catch record book and our team, the river has been slowly dropping back all day.

On the upside we have had some very heavy rain this afternoon and Steve is expecting a better rise tomorrow.

7th October 2015

The river is 4" (10cm) on the gauge, it rose higher through the night but has now dropped back. Air temp is 11C (52F) and the water temp is 11C (52F).

Steve tells me this morning that we have very black clouds and it is starting to drizzle.

6th October 2015

Nothing today...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods, the drive up was a mix of rain and heavy drizzle and when I arrived the river had yet to show any rise in levels.

Our team of rods were returning back to the bothy dripping wet but all commenting on how much it had warmed up from yesterday.

After lunch the rain stopped and the cloud broke up to give us big patches of blue sky and sunshine, not what we need.

Chris E helping Mike H sharpen up his casting skills.
Dennis P fishing The Clure.
Duncan P in The Island Pool

As I left for home you could just start to notice the river rising as some of the stones that were just breaking the surface were now covered and bits of grass and weed could now be seen floating downstream. When I rang Steve for his final report he told me that the couple of sticks that were stuck on the gravel bar outside the bothy had now floated away. I don't think it is a rise of any significance but every little helps at the moment.

You may have seen in the September news about the 6 trout fishing kits we were putting together in the event of us being washed off, well I am happy to say they are now ready to go.

So in the event of you being washed off, we can arrange a day on a local trout stillwater and supply you with all the kit, rod, reel, line, tippet and flies completely free of charge.

6th October 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 14C (57F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

It is raining this morning and the gauges further upstream are rising. Looking at the rainfall radar the rain is predominately to the east so it won't have that much of an impact for us but it will raise levels downstream of us and allow the fish to push closer.

Beggars can't be choosers...

5th October 2015

Close but ...

Finally some rain has arrived, although the river levels remain stable at the moment, the fish are a lot more active today with the cloud cover and no doubt the smell of fresher water coming into the river.

David P had a brief encounter in the tail of the Bridge Pool, one of those thump, bang, bang, headshaking moments then nothing.

We are also encouraged by some of the good numbers caught today on the lower beats.

All eyes on the gauges.

5th October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 7C (45F).

All eyes are on the sky watching for the rain coming.

3rd October 2015

Nothing today...

Nothing for Ron and Greta on their last day, we thought we were in for a shout with the broken cloud cover.

We really need some water to clean the river out of the sludge on the bottom and bring us some fresh fish.

3rd October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

2nd October 2015

And the.....

I went up to the beat today to visit our rods and when I arrived I found Ken F enjoying the sun and reading a book on the bench outside the bothy. He had no luck when he stayed on to fish yesterday evening.

It wasn't long after that Ron and Greta arrived back with Steve for lunch and reported that Ron had a fish in The Bishops, they got a brief spell of cloud cover and a breeze putting a ripple on the water, it was then Ron got a take and had his fish on for over a minute...... and the bugger got off!!!

After lunch Ken F decided to head for home and Ron and Greta headed back out onto the river, alas nothing to report and it all got a bit much for Greta who decided to go for a "paddle" just before the close of play.

You can tell the low water is getting to us, back at the bothy, Greta was wringing out her wet sleeve and as the water dripped onto the ground, Steve said "don't waste it, put it back in the river" !!!

Hopefully our last 2 standing will be rewarded tomorrow.

2nd October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is 4C (39F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

Clear blue skies this morning and looking at this time last year, conditions are virtually identical.

1st October 2015

Nothing so far...

We started this morning cold and foggy, by mid morning it was blue skies and blazing sunshine which had the air temperature pushing towards the 70's. Husband and wife team Ron and Greta have requested a bikini and suncream.

With these conditions our team was up against it and unfortunately nothing to report for Ron and Greta. Ken F has stayed out fishing to see if he could temp anything when things cool off and I will update you tomorrow on any success.

1st October 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp is a chilly 2C (35F) and the water temp is 8C (46F).

A frosty and foggy start this morning, we have 3 rods on the river today as 2 cancelled due to the low water.

31st October 2014

One of each...

John E added another 2 fish to his score, a 7lber and 2lbs Sea-Trout, both from The Bridge Pool, John also lost a fish in The Cauld Hole.

The team are seeing fish in big numbers including some very large "tartan tourist's" but they are not interested in anything we can offer them.

We're not sure if the fish are coloured or have a sun-tan, it reached 22C (72F) on the riverbank today.

It's the last day of October for heavens sake, could this season get any more bizarre?

Thank you to every one for their kind words of support, knee surgery went well and the necessary repairs done.

Very sore at the moment but hopefully the road of recovery is not to long.

31st October 2014

The river is 2'1" (64cm) on the gauge, air temp is 18C (64F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

30th October 2014

2 Sea-Trout...

John E opened his account today with 2 Sea-Trout, a 2 1/2lber in The Clure and a 2lber in The Bridge Pool. John also lost another fish in The Bridge Pool.

Patrick W practised long distance catch & release in The Gooselandale and Michael E had a few plucks, pulls and bangs but no solid hook-ups.

The river level held steady all day.

30th October 2014

The river height is 2'3" (67cm) and holding steady, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 12C (54F)

29th October 2014

Nothing today...

The river colour got the better of us today, we did see a lot of fish running straight up the center of the river, but other than a couple of on and off encounters for Brian E and Keith B in The Bridge Pool there was nothing else to report

The river also didn't drop as much as we expected today, it held steady at the 3'3"(99cm)mark for most of the day and was 2'8" (81cm) at the close of play.

Hopefully things will come good for the new team tomorrow.

They will be no river condition report in the morning and the evening report may be delayed as I am having some much needed knee surgery tomorrow.

29th October 2014

The river is 3'3" (99cm) on the gauge after peaking at 6'9" (2.06m) last night and is coloured, air temp is 2C (36F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

We have a hard frost and a very slight northerly breeze this morning.

28th October 2014

Water, water everywhere...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and drove through some pretty horrible weather, when I crossed the River Teviot I thought oh no, it was up and dirty.

When I arrived at Caberston at 11:30 the river had risen to 2'4" (71cm) from 1'8" (51cm) at 08:15 this morning.

The rain seemed to be relentless but it certainly did not dampen the spirits of our team and Patrick W had a brief encounter with a fish in Shaw's, his fish taking the fly right in the margins as Patrick was chatting with another member of the team.

The roaring fire and hot soup at lunchtime was most welcome and the banter was top drawer, I don't think that even a monsoon could dampen the spirits of this group.

After lunch the river was now starting to rise rapidly and was up to the 3' (92cm) mark and starting to colour, this didn't phase the group who changed to fast sinkers and big flies.

Another thing of note was the air temperature, it was 15C (59F) this morning, when I arrived at the beat it had dropped to 11C (52F) and when the team left for the afternoon session it was down to 9C (48F).

When I rang Steve this evening for the final report, the river was still rising and was up to the 5' (1.52m) mark and the team were in The Bothy enjoying some Upper Caberston hospitality.

You can't keep a good group down.

28th October 2014

The river is 1'8" (51cm) and rising, air temp 15C (59F) and water temp is 12C (54F).

Again we have a very strong downstream wind and it is raining quite heavy.

27th October 2014

The Bishop's claim a Virgin!!!

Congratulations to Torquil C on catching his first ever salmon, a 10lber in The Bishop's which he returned. A drink or six to be had this evening.

Commiserations to Iain M who lost a fish in Shaw's after having it on for a while.

The weather has been pretty horrible today with a very strong downstream wind and rain. The good news is that we have seen a lot of fish moving from pool to pool.

After holding steady this afternoon, the river is on the rise again.

All eyes on the gauges for tomorrow.

27th October 2014

The river is 1'8" (51cm) and rising, air temp 15C (59F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

We also have a very strong downstream wind.

25th October 2014

The BBC...

It's starting to feel like Christmas on BBC 1, REPEATS !!!

We have had a downstream "hooley" causing casting problems, then blazing sunshine this afternoon and a beat full of fish not interested in our offerings.

To add insult to injury, Simon N hooked a fish that decided to take his fly in The Bridge Pool....... and the bugger got off!!!

It's starting to feel like if we fell in a barrel full of T!ts, we'd come out sucking our thumb!!!

Cancellation...

I have just had 2 rods become available due to work commitments.

10th-12th Nov (Mon-Wed) £498.50 per rod.

Please get in touch if they are of interest.

25th October 2014

The river is 1'3" (38cm) on the gauge, air temp 10C (50F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

We also have a strengthening downstream wind.

24th October 2014

Doldrums....

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods, I arrived later than usual as I had to collect some supplies for Steve. When I arrived our team had finished lunch and were ready for the afternoon session.

Steve informed me that the fish had been keeping their heads down this morning.

I did some odd jobs while hopefully waiting for the radio to crackle in to life and report a fish, sadly no such report came in.

When chatting with the team, some of them had not even seen a fish, whilst others had and when chatting with Craig P, who caught our 22lber yesterday, he reported that he moved a few fish, some of them jumping out of the water when his fly covered them.

This is turning into one of the strangest season's I've had at Caberston and the general consensus is that whilst we have fish in the beat, they are keeping their mouths well and truly shut.

24th October 2014

The river is 1'4" (41cm) on the gauge and holding steady, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 10C (50F)

We have a very slight downstream breeze this morning.

23rd October 2014

22lbs of happiness...

It seems an eternity since we landed our last salmon, the 16th of this month to be precise.

So not only a congratulations to Craig P on landing a 22lber in The Bridge Pool, but also a big thank you, as you have restored a level of sanity in Steve and myself.

Steve also said that he has seen more fish today than he has all season, ranging from fresh grilse to tartan dreadnoughts and everything in between.

Please Salmon God's, let things be on the up......

23rd October 2014

The river is 1'6" (46F) on the gauge, air temp 12C (54F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

We also have again a strong downstream breeze.

22nd October 2014

1 Today...

Ed P spared our blushes today with a 4lbs Sea-Trout from The Clure.

Louis A was still unable to keep his fish on, losing one in The Bridge Pool and Mark G lost a very good fish in The Gooselandale that headed downstream and crossed the weir in The Cauld Hole and threw the hook.

We seem to be losing a lot of fish this season.

22nd October 2014

The river is 1'9" (53cm) and falling, air temp is 8C (46F), water temp 8C (46F).

We still have a downstream breeze but nowhere near as strong as yesterday.

21st October 2014

A Tad Breezy....

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and found them troubled with wind, not from the beans on the breakfast you understand.

It was blowing a "hooley," which not only made casting a headache, it also added that autumnal curse to the river, leaves!!!

The river itself started at 2' (61cm) this morning and when I arrived it had risen to 2'7" (79cm) and was carrying a little tinge of colour.

The other noticeable change was the air temperature, even though the weather station was displaying 9C (48F), it factors in the wind chill which the station displayed as feeling like 6C (43F). It's been a long time since we have had that as a daytime temperature. This made the fire in the Bothy most welcome when the boys came in for lunch.

As the wind got stronger, some members of the team decided that an afternoon nap in the warmth of the Bothy was in order and as we had one of the team pull out at the last moment due to flu, they invited Steve for a cast.....

Yes, you've guest it, Steve landed a cracking 10lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

Apparently he is now officially "a jammie fatherless person"!!!

21st October 2014

The river is 2' (61cm) and rising, air temp 7C (45F), water temp 10C (50F).

We also have a very strong North Westerley wind.

20th October 2014

3 lost...

A tale of "close but no cigar" today.

Louis A lost 2 fish, one in The Clure and his second in The Bridge Pool, Steve said the second fish was a good one, it turned downstream and headed for Berwick, it then swam around the big rock in The Bridge Pool and the rest is history.

Mark G also lost a fish in The Bishop's.

We saw a lot of running fish this morning and all we could do was wish them well on their journey.

Hopefully the weather is not too harsh tonight and tomorrow to keep us in with a shout.

20th October 2014

The river is 2'6" (76cm) falling and running clear, air temp 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

18th October 2014

Mother Nature's time of the month....

The weather gods have been against us so far this season, we started on 1'2" (36cm) and rising this morning and by around about lunchtime the river had risen rapidly to 4'2" (1.27m) and turned dirty.

I would normally describe the dirty river as hot chocolate, but from Steve description, with all of the logs, leaves by the thousands and other flotsam and jetsam it sounds more like lumpy gravy.

Looking at the weather for the start of next week, I thinks it's time to hide any lengths of rope!!!

Mother Nature, don't you just love her.

18th October 2014

The river is 1'2" (36cm) on the gauge and rising, air temp 15C (59F) and water temp is 12C (54F).

17th October 2014

Torture...

I went up to the beat today to meet our team of rods, when I got out of the car it felt more like June than October and on checking the weather station, it was 16C (61F) in the shade for heaven's sake!!!

After the team had lunch I went out with them to hopefully capture a picture of a landed fish.

As Steve and myself watched Dave H fish down one pool, we saw in five minutes, easily in excess of a dozen fish ranging from fresh to tartan tourist's and everything in-between sploshing about and not one on the take. The same story up and down the beat.

The team tried fishing on the top, in the middle, on the bottom, little flies and big tubes.

All with nothing to show for it other than a very brief encounter with a Sea-Trout for Andy H in The Bridge Pool.

If you see a grown man, screaming at the river.......

before being sectioned by the men in white coats......

Try and understand I'm a salmon fisherman !!!

17th October 2014

The river is remains stubbornly at 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp 10C (50F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

16th October 2014

1 Today...

The weather has been "dour" as Steve put it, grey and switching from rain to drizzle and back again this morning.

This afternoon the rain and drizzle stopped but it remained grey and damp and it just didn't feel fishy.

This however meant nothing to John W, who landed a 12lber in The Clure, which was returned.

Well done John.

We are expecting a rise in water and hopefully that will not only put the fish on the take but allow some new arrivals to enter the beat.

16th October 2014

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp 10C (50F), water temp is 9C (48F).

It is raining quite heavy and Steve is expecting the river to rise.

15th October 2014

1 Today...

Out team of rods were blighted again today with bright sunshine, which coupled with a clear and shrinking river makes things difficult.

This didn't stop Jim W landing a 5 1/2lbs Sea-Trout in The Bishop's

Andrew R lost a good fish at the net in The Bishop's, I'm saying nothing, but guess who had the net? Dudley H!!!

If Dudley didn't have bad luck, he would have no luck at all.

We did see a pod of fresh grilse crossing the gravel bar outside of the hut and these were also seen running through The Clure by Nigel A, these were running hard with no intention of stopping.

Rain is forecast and this will give the river a welcome top up.

We welcome a new team of rods tomorrow.

15th October 2014

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp 8C (46F).

14th October 2014

Keeping their heads down...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods, hopeful that they had continued where they left off yesterday. However the early morning cloud cover soon burned off and left them with blazing sunshine.

The general consensus from the team was that the fish were no where near as "visual" as yesterday and keeping their heads down.

After lunch the weather changed again, giving us a blustery easterly upstream wind that was carrying with it some squally showers.

I am sorry to report that Dudley H continued his run of bad luck and lost another fish in The Clure. Steve has offered to sell him some Kamasan or Fulling Mill hooks as it appears Dudley got his from Dunlop's!!!

Thankfully Nigel A, spared our blushes, landing a 8lber from The Weaver's, Nigel also had a brief encounter in The Bridge Pool.

Cheers Lad's.

14th October 2014

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

It is dull and overcast with a North Easterly breeze.

13th October 2014

Unlucky for some...

A new week and a new team.

Nigel A, on his first visit to Upper Caberston landed a 9lber from The Gooselandale, a 6lber from The Bridge Pool and a 3 1/2 lbs Sea-Trout from The Weaver's.

Arnold S landed a 5lber from The Weaver's and last but by no means least, John R landed a 2 lbs Sea-Trout from The Gooselandale.

All fish returned.

Jim W practised involuntary catch and release with a good fish in The Clure.

The 13th was definitely unlucky for Dudley H, Dudley fishes with a good bunch of lads and does some casting instruction, fly tying etc. and is normally top rod.

However today was not his day, Dudley lost a good fish in The Clure and lost another 2 in The Bridge Pool, much to his own disgust.

This of course opened the floodgates to some serious ribbing in The Bothy and from what Steve tells me is going to continue in the hotel tonight, one comment was for him to order fish tonight and hopefully he will manage to keep it on the plate.

13th October 2014

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge, air temp is 7C (45F) and water temp is 9C (48F).

We have a slight north easterly breeze which is forecast to increase.

11th October 2014

2 of each...

Thankfully the fish drought has ended with the change of tactics that Steve recommended. Tony R landing a 10lbs salmon in The Bridge Pool and a 1 1/2lb Sea-Trout from The Weavers.

Our team left the beat early for the journey home so Steve had a cast and landed a 8lber from The Bishops and a 2 1/2lbs Sea-Trout from The Weavers.

All fish returned.

11th October 2014

The river is back up to 1'3" (38cm)on the gauge after dropping to 1'1" (33cm) yesterday, air temp is 3C (37F) and water temp is 8C (46F).

10th October 2014

Frustration...

I went up to visit our team of 5 rods today and found them in good spirits albeit frustrated with the lack of fish action.

Tony R's Fish!!!

Whilst driving up and speaking with Steve, he said they were being cursed with blazing sunshine, when I arrived cloud cover was coming in, more on that later.

I watched our team after lunch and they were certainly casting and fishing well, just the fish were not playing.

John R had one of those zzzzzzzzzzz zzzzzzzzz moments when a fish took line from his reel in The Clure and when John lifted into it.......nothing!!!!

John R, the look sums it up...

Steve is planning a change of tactics tomorrow as he is well aware of fish being caught below and above us and trust me, this makes Steve not a happy bunny.

As I left for the drive home, black, thunderous looking clouds were gathering and it was beginning to rain.

As I crossed the border into Northumberland, I was treated to a very unusual and spectacular cloud formation.

Mother nature, like Salmon fishing, can just make you step back and smile.

10th October 2014

The river is 1'3" (38cm) on the gauge, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 9C (48F)

I'm heading up to the beat this morning, so hopefully I'll have some good news to report tonight.

9th October 2014

Nothing today...

Our new team of 5 rods, 3 of which are fishing Caberston for the first time, fished hard today for no return. We have seen a lot more fish today than previous weeks which is encouraging for all involved.

We are further encouraged by the catches reported further downstream that more fish are on the way.

The river for the most part has remained level although Steve thinks we may have had a small rise.

Let see what tomorrow brings...

9th October 2014

The river is 1'3" (38cm) on the gauge, air temp 8C (46F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

It is overcast with a light breeze, encouraged by the catches downstream yesterday, Steve says "Perfect".

8th October 2014

Little Finnock!!!

After fishing numerous years, Chris E told me yesterday that he has never caught a Scottish Sea-Trout, he's caught them in England, Wales and Ireland but not in Scotland.

Well like waiting for buses, 2 turn up at once, Chris landed and returned 2 clean Sea-Trout weighing 2 lbs and 1 1/2 lbs respectively in The Bridge Pool.

Well done Chris.

Dennis P continued where he left off yesterday and lost a fish in The Weaver's.

Cheers lad's.

The river is now down to 1'4" (41cm) on the gauge and we welcome a new team of rods tomorrow.

8th October 2014

The river is 1'6" (46cm) on the gauge, air temp is 5C (41F) and water temp is 8C (46F)

We have a chilly upstream wind this morning.

7th October 2014

Tales of woe...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods.

The Motley Crew

The river was at a historically difficult height for us where the fish have free passage through the beat.

If it's below 1'6" (46cm) the fish have to pause to cross various obstacles as they move from pool to pool and if the river is around 3'6"(1.07m) and above, the force of the water again makes them pause before moving on.

As if catching running fish is not a challenge on it's own, the fact that once the fog dispersed, we had blazing sun all day which made it more difficult.

We did have two brief encounters, Dennis P had a fish on in The Clure, yes he thought after the take, only to have his fish come to the surface, shake it's head and throw the hook. Bugger!!!

Chris E had one of those takes where your reel spins and then nothing. Double Bugger!!!

The rest of the team were having their string pulled by trout and parr.

The river was down to 1'9" (53cm) and falling when I left for home this evening and with more cloud cover forecast it should be perfect tomorrow.

No pressure then lads!!!

7th October 2014

The river is 2'3" (67cm) and falling on the gauge, air temp 2C (36F) and water temp 8C (46F)

The colour from the river has cleared and it is quite foggy with very little breeze.

All in all, a nice day to be on the river.

6th October 2014

Against the odds...

We have had some pretty horrible weather today, heavy rain driven by a very strong wind which made casting a challenge.

The river has been on the rise and colouring up all day and when I last spoke with Steve at 17:30, the river was 4'3" (1.30m), dirty and still rising.

Once again the flotsam and jetsam became a problem for our team of rods.

We did however land our first Salmon of the season, a 6lbs grilse for Duncan R in the Bridge Pool. His fish took the fly tight up against the edge of the riverbank.

The weather has settled down and with a cold night forecast, things look promising for tomorrow.

6th October 2014

The river is 1'4" ((41cm) and rising, air temp 10C (50F) and water temp 8C (46F).

It's raining quite heavy and very windy.

We have a full compliment of rods for the next 3 days.

Good luck men.

4th October 2014

Too much water!!!

It's hard to believe that we had 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge yesterday and as I have just finished getting an update from Steve at 15:10, the river is 5'6" (1.68m) very dirty and rising

Ron and Greta fished this morning, again changing tactics to suit the conditions, using fast sinking lines and big bright fly's, but on every cast their fly's were catching all of the flotsam and jetsam coming down in the flood.

After lunch they decided to call it quits.

Hopefully the conditions will be greatly improved for Ron and Greta's return in November.

The silver lining is that the flood now opens up the Tweed for the autumn run and brings the fish full on, right to Upper Caberston.

4th October 2014

Feast or Famine...

Well, our prayers for rain have certainly been answered. The river has risen from 1" (2.5cm) to 4' (1.22m) on the gauge.

It was 3'10" (1.17m) when I started speaking with Steve and was 4' (1.22m) when we had finished.

The air temp is 8C (46F) and the water temp is 10C (50F)

Steve is going to try fishing the bends and margins as he has saw fish running this morning.

3rd October 2014

On the up...

I went up to the beat today and the weather this morning was intermittent drizzle showers, the kind of drizzle that soaks you in seconds.

When I arrived, husband & wife team Ron and Greta were making their way back to the bothy for a quick coffee.

I enjoy meeting my anglers and Ron & Greta are the type of angler's who go by "if your fly's not in the water, you'll not catch a fish" attitude, even when faced with the less than ideal conditions.

After lunch, as I was getting ready for the journey back home, the drizzle changed to rain and Ron & Greta changed tactics and fly's, but unfortunately for no reward.

When I spoke with Steve this evening he tells me the rain has got heavier and they saw a lot more fish this afternoon, hopefully stirred up by the smell of the fresh water coming.

I hope the fish play tomorrow for Ron & Greta, because the effort they put in, they certainly deserve one.

3rd October 2014

It's RAINING!!!!

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, the air temperature has again flipped on it's head and is 18C (64F) and the water temp is 8C (46F). Poor Mr Salmon doesn't know which way is up with these changing temperatures.

By the way, did I say it was RAINING!!!!

2nd October 2014

Blankety Blank...

Despite fishing hard all day, husband and wife team Ron & Greta had nothing to show for their efforts.

Thankfully the much needed rain is forecast to arrive tomorrow lunch time, hopefully this will switch the fish on as they sense to coming water.

2nd October 2014

This morning we have remarkable and welcome change in the weather. The river remains at 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp 6C (42F), we have had a ground frost this morning. The water temp is 8C (46F).

A 11 degree change in air temperature and a 7 degree change in water temperature.

The only down side is that 2 rods have decided not to join us.

1st October 2014

Nothing today...

With no rods on the river Steve had a couple of hours fishing with nothing to show for it.

Steve's words "the buggers are there, but they aren't taking".

We have 4 rods on the beat tomorrow and much cooler overnight temperatures forecast.

Fingers crossed!!!

1st October 2014

The river is 1" (2.5cm) on the gauge, air temp 17C (63F) and water temp 13C (56F).

We have no rods on the river today, so after doing some odd jobs Steve is going to have a cast.

31st October 2013

5 Salmon & 3 Sea-Trout...

John E was top rod today with 2 Salmon & 3 Sea-Trout, John's first Salmon was a 17lber from The Weaver followed by a 10lber from The Gooselandale. John also landed 3 Sea-Trout, all at 3lbs, 2 from The Gooselandale and 1 from The Clure.

Michael E had 2 Salmon today, both in The Bishop's, his first a 23lber followed by a 7lber.

And last but no means least Dr. Patrick W landed a 20lber from The Cauld Hole.

We also lost a good number of fish and our rods had plenty of plucks.

The river is dropping and clearing away the small amount of colour it had this morning.

31st October 2013

After rising last night the river is 1'11" on the gauge this morning, air temp 11C, water temp 44F.

30th October 2013

9 Salmon & 1 Sea-Trout...

After landing his 30lber yesterday Patrick W had another cracking day, no pun intended as the tip of his rod snapped today, Patrick grinning as he said "it must be from the strain of all those fish!"

Luckily a spare rod in the car came to the rescue.

Patrick landed 5 fish today, a 9lber, a 7lber and a 4lber all from The Gooselandale, followed by a 7lber and 10lber from The Bishop's and a 5lber from The Clure.

Brian E also continued his good run with 5lber from The Cauld Hole followed by a 14lber from The Gooselandale.

Brian's 14lber

Steve then had a cast as 2 of our rods left early for the trip home, Steve landed a 6lbs Salmon and a 3 1/2 pound Sea-Trout, both from The Bridge Pool.

I've just done some number crunching and Brian E has landed 8 Salmon totalling 68lbs and a 2 1/2lb Sea-Trout for 3 days fishing and Patrick Walker has landed 7 Salmon totalling 68lbs in weight for his 3 days fishing.

Well done men.

Tomorrow we have a full team of 6 rods who are all Caberston veterans...

No pressure lads!!!

30th October 2013

The river is 1'3 on the gauge, it is chilly this morning with the air temp 7C, water temp 43F.

As Steve says "Perfect"

29th October 2013

7 Today including a Dreadnought...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of 4 rods, I found them in good spirits and I was told they had 3 fish this morning.

Keith B fishing The Cauld Hole.

Brian E had a cracking day landing 5 fish, Brian had a 6lber from The Bishops, a 5lber from The Bridge Pool, a 4lber from The Weaver, after lunch he landed a 7lber from The Cauld Hole and finished with a 9lber from The Weaver.

Brian E fishing The Clure.

In 2 days Brian has landed and returned 49lbs of Salmon and 2 1/2lbs of Sea-Trout.

That beats working!!!

Hew B fishing The Clure.

Patrick W also got in on the action with a 6lber from The Bridge Pool, but this was only a taste of what was to come.

Patrick W fishing The Bishop's.

Patrick fished The Weaver this afternoon and successfully landed a 30lber!!! Patrick endured a 30 minute long tug of war session and under the close guidance of Steve, who had Patrick walking his fish up and down The Weaver until they landed it, a 30lb Cock fish dressed in full tartan, a huge kype and a girth of 24", apologies for the quality, bloody camera phones!

Patrick's 30lber.

I sense a few sore heads in the morning

.With the river level and temperature dropping hopefully this is a taste of what is yet to come.

29th October 2013

The river is 1'11" on the gauge, air temp 10C, water temp 45F.

28th October 2013

1 Salmon and 2 Sea-Trout...

With the river at what is historically a difficult height for us, (they tend to run straight through) I am pleased our team got some fish today.

Brian E lead the way with a 18lber from The Bridge Pool, Brian also successfully landed a 2 1/2lb Sea-Trout from The Gooselandale.

Brian's 18lber.

Steve was invited for a cast and he landed a 3lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

Keith B fishing the last glimmers of daylight in The Bridge Pool lost 3 fish within 20 casts, at one point he thought he had hooked bottom until it started to move!!!

We saw a lot of fish today and as the river is 2' and dropping this evening hopefully they will start to get held up.

28th October 2013

The river is 2'4" and dropping, air temp 12C, water temp 45F.

26th October 2013

One today...

Simon N added another fish to his tally, a 12lber from The Bridge Pool.

The river was dropping slowly all day and as we finished it was down to just above the 2' mark.

We saw a lot of fish today but they had one thing on their mind, "running," they were running hard to they spawning grounds and it is always a challenge to catch them when they are in that mode.

26th October 2013

Phew!! The river is 2'5" and dropping and more importantly, it is clear. Air temp 14C, water temp 46F.

25th October 2013

2 today...

I went up to visit our team of rods today and Mother Nature had decided to flip the weather on it's head again.

Yesterday it was so warm that they had lunch at the outside table of The Bothy, today everyone was pleased to be greeted with the roaring fire and the shelter from the rain.

With the heavy rain the river was rising, thankfully steadily and was not turning dirty, however the leaves were really becoming tiresome, we really could do with a hard frost and a good windy spell to clear the trees, at least the latter is forecast.

Janice H fishing The Bridge Pool

John C had a enjoyable day landing 2 Salmon, the first a 10lber from The Gooselandale followed by a 5lber from The Clure this afternoon.

Russell N fishing The Gooselandale

Everything is crossed hoping that the river is fishable tomorrow after today's heavy rain, the height we can manage as long as the water doesn't turn dirty.

25th October 2013

The river is 1'6" on the gauge, air temp 14C, water temp 46F.

As forecast, is it raining very heavily this morning, hopefully we will get a full day's fishing before the river starts to rise.

24th October 2013

One of one and two of the other...

The weather conditions could not have been anymore different than yesterday, today we had bright warm sunshine with the temperature getting up to 19C, which is just plain bizarre for October, barely any wind to speak of and a dropping, clearing river.

Mother Nature sure does like to keep us guessing but she doesn't stop us catching fish.

David H opened his account today with 2 Sea-Trout, a 4lber and a 3lber, both from The Bridge Pool.

Also on the score sheet was Simon N, with a very fresh 12lbs Salmon from The Clure.

Simon's 12lber

The weather forecast is all change again for tomorrow, waterproofs at the ready!!!

24th October 2013

The river is 2'2" on the gauge this morning and is slightly coloured, air temp 12C, water temp 46F.

23rd October 2013

One of each...

We thought that yesterday's catch was a great achievement in the conditions we had but today was an even greater one.

We started this morning with the river at 2'8" and rising and it continued to rise throughout the day, whilst getting even dirtier. The river peaked at just over the 3' mark. What made things even more difficult was the fact that we also had a howling downstream wind which not only made casting near impossible, it also filled the river with leaves by the thousands.

When I spoke with Steve mid-afternoon we hadn't even had a touch but our rods knuckled down and got stuck in and fished on until dark.

Ken S was rewarded with a 4lbs Grilse from The Bridge Pool followed by Matt C who landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout, also from The Bridge Pool.

Matt also lost another fish in The Bridge Pool and it is a good job he is a dentist, as apparently all the 'effing & fuffing' was enough to make anyone lose their front teeth!!!

A fantastic achievement on a dirty, rising river, full of leaves and with a horrible wind.

Well done men.

23rd October 2013

After dropping back to 2'5" last night, the river is 2'8" and rising this morning due to the heavy overnight rain. Air temp 16C, water temp 46F.

22nd October 2013

Against the odds, 2 of each...

We started this morning with the river 4', rising and dirty, Steve reassured our team of rods and kept them fuelled with coffee and biscuits whilst keeping an eye on the gauge for the river peaking and then holding steady.

The river peaked at 4'2" and by 11:15am, Steve had our team fishing the bends and the points where the burns join the main river.

On my drive up to visit our rods I crossed the river further downstream and it looked like a raging torrent of hot chocolate.

When I arrived at the beat just before 1pm the river had dropped to 3' and I was greeted with the news that we had landed a fish and lost 3 others.

Mark G landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

After lunch Graham H added a 5lbs Grilse from The Bishop's to his tally, followed by K Siford who landed a 8lber from The Bridge Pool.

Ken S fishing The Bridge Pool.

Steve was then invited by one of our rods to show them how he fished a sinking line and in doing so Steve landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

Today's catch is a testament to Steve and his skills and knowledge of his beat, so much so in fact that, whilst chatting, one of our rods commented that any other Ghillie would have told them this morning to "Bugger Off, Its a waste of time", but not Steve.

It is also testament to our team of rods, who not only followed Steve's advice but also kept at it until it was dark this evening, when probably most of the anglers on the river didn't even set their rods up.

It is a pleasure to see the beat at this time of year when the trees are in their autumn colours and my photograph does not do it justice, you just have to be there.

It may be premature, but I have an ever widening grin on my face as I type this report at 21:40 this evening and looking at the blank latest catches page on Fish Tweed.

At this moment in time, Life is Good!!!

22nd October 2013

After heavy rain to the West of us the river is 4' and rising this morning and the air temperature is a crazy 18C.

21st October 2013

One of each...

Today started with a bang with a double hook up in The Bridge Pool, sadly both fish got off, but it wasn't all tales of woe, Graham H after losing a fish, successfully landed a 6lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

Ken S achieved a personal best today with a 18lber from The Gooselandale which took nearly 25 minutes to land!

Steve said this afternoon was like somebody flicked a switch and the fish put their heads down, we never got so much as a take. Tomorrows another day.

21st October 2013

The river is 1'6" on the gauge and dropping, air temp 15C, water temp 47F.

The river is still carrying a hint of colour but is perfectly fishable.

19th October 2013

2 More and a Sea-Trout...

John W added another 2 fish to his tally, both 5lb Grilse from The Bishop's, John also lost a couple more.

As one of our rods left at lunch time to catch his ferry back to the Netherlands and after asking our remaining 2 rods, Steve had a cast and landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout from The Weaver.

As predicted, this afternoon the river began to rise and rose from 6" to 1'2" and turned dirty.

Roll on Monday.

19th October 2013

The river is holding steady at 6", we are expecting the river to rise later in the day as we had heavy rain last night. Air temp 14C, water temp 46F.

Taking numbers from Fish Tweed we caught not only the most fish yesterday but also the heaviest and we were only fishing 4 rods!!!

18th October 2013

5 Salmon & 3 Sea-Trout...

I went up to the beat early this morning to meet our rods and as we only have 3 rods fishing at the moment, to have a cast myself, anyone would think I owned the place!!!

We started today with 6" on the gauge, air temp 12C, water temp 47F. The river had dropped and cleared very nicely and was only carrying the slightest tinge of colour.

Andrew H and John W had a very good day. Andrew got things under way with a 22lber from The Bishop's,

Andrew H hanging on to his 22lber.

Andrew then went on to land a 6lber from The Clure followed by a 5lber from The Lower Runners.

John W landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout from The Island Pool followed by a 3lber from The Clure. After lunch John went on to land a 6lbs Salmon from The Bridge Pool followed by a 7lber from The Weaver.

Last but by all means not least, yours truly landed a 9lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

All fish were returned and we all saw a lot of fish running the beat today.

17th October 2013

One of each...

We got off the mark today with a gleaming 3lbs Sea-Trout, caught by John W in The Bridge Pool.

Our team of rods then started to suffer the autumn curse, "leaves" and lots of them, then the river started to colour up, which really is not surprising as the river bed has been covered with algae and "sludge" from the low, warm water.

That didn't stop Steve having a cast after our team called it quits for the day, he landed a 4 1/2 lbs Grilse again from The Bridge Pool.

The prospects for tomorrow look really good, a dropping clearing river with lots of fish which have been held up now able to push forward.

17th October 2013

At last some water!!!

The river is 1' on the gauge and is only very slightly coloured, perfect for the fly. Air temp 12C, water temp 47F.

16th October 2013

Another blank...

Nothing today for our team of rods. The good news is that it is raining and it is heavy to the West of us which hopefully means a good rise to clear the river and let a lot more fish reach us, it also means Steve's knees can get a rest after praying so long for the rain to come!!!

16th October 2013

The river remains below summer level, air temp 10C,water temp 46F.

15th October 2013

Nothing today...

Nothing for the book today, our team saw a couple of fish but none want to take the fly.

Steve says the river is on it knees, you can see right across the bottom of The Gooselandale, hopefully good news is on the horizon as Steve says there are some very black clouds overhead.

15th October 2013

The river remains below summer level, air temp 12C, water temp 47 F.

Fingers are firmly crossed for the rain that is forecast.

14th October 2013

A Virginity lost...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and it turned out to be a very special day for one angler, Jim W.

After fishing for 3 years, during which time he has received a good amount of ribbing for not catching a Salmon, Jim finally broke his duck with a 11lber from The Gooselandale.

Jim W holding his first ever Salmon like a new born baby.

At the end of the day the boys offered a toast to Jim, congratulating him on his achievement.

I sense a few sore heads in the morning. Congratulations Jim.

14th October 2013

The river remains below summer level, air temp 12C, water temp 47F. We have bright sunshine and a light NE wind.

12th October 2013

2 More...

Neil C added another fish to his account today, a 3lber from The Cauld Hole.

Our team of rods left mid-afternoon to catch flights or start the long drive home, so after tidying up ready for our new team of rods on Monday, Steve had a quick cast in The Upper Runners and landed a 5lber.

We really could do with some water, it is quite a contrast to what we term as normal tactics/conditions, normally we would be using sinking lines and 1" or bigger tubes. So far this season it has been floating lines with intermediate tips and small doubles.

Looking at the number of fish being caught in the lower river, Tillmouth as an example, catching 94 this week, 29 of those today, when the water does arrive I think a bonanza will be had.

I'm a fisherman, I have to be an optimist!!!

12th October 2013

The river is below summer level, air temp 12C,water temp 47F and we have a brisk NE wind.

11th October 2013

One of each again...

Neil C was today's captor of a 10lbs Salmon and a 3lbs Sea-Trout, both from the Island Pool.

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of 3 rods and the conditions, with the exception of the low water, seemed perfect, it was overcast, a light upstream breeze, it just felt fishy. It's a shame the fish didn't think so!

Neil's 10lber

Neil's 3lb Sea-Trout

The fish appear to be following the same pattern over the last couple of days, they are showing quite a lot in the morning session and keeping their heads down in the afternoon.

John R fishing The Cauld Hole

11th October 2013

The river is now below summer level, air temp 12C, water temp 46F.

10th October 2013

One of each...

Apologies for the lack of river report this morning, we had a problem with our telecommunications server in Scotland, Steve's phone was flat!!!

The river is still at summer level, air temp has been 8 C all day and the water temp has dropped down to 44 F.

On to the fishing, John R fishing at Upper Caberston for the first time landed a 8lber from The Island Pool, John also landed a 2lbs Sea-Trout from The Cauld Hole.

It is encouraging that the air and water temperatures are dropping to a more normal level, however we could do with some water.

9th October 2013

A tad breezy...

Nothing for our team of rods today. Low water and fish not on the take was bad enough, but we had the added factor of a howling downstream wind, which in the morning session was carrying heavy showers.

In the afternoon the wind got even stronger and turned the river into what resembled the North Sea, white horses down the entire beat! The wind then gave us the added autumn curse of filling the river with leaves. Oh joy!!!

By mid-afternoon, 4 of our rods called it quits after hooking themselves, their flies getting caught up in the bushes and even at one point, getting stuck in a tree, it just wasn't pleasurable anymore.

Our 2 remaining rods persevered until the end but alas for no reward.

However they all kept smiling and as they left they said they are already looking forward to coming back next year.

Cheers lads.

9th October 2013

Apologies for the late report, I was up on the beat yesterday and did not get home until late.

Frustration...

I went up to the beat yesterday to meet our team of rods, they are a great group, the banter and leg pulling is non stop.

The salmon were in a tormenting mood yesterday with a lot of fish making themselves known in various pools, some splashing under the rod tip! The team went through the flybox changing colour and size throughout the day but they didn't want to know.

Ron M into a 'rock fish'!!!

At lunch time the river was starting to rise slowly and by close of play it had came up around 3", along with the rise came a strong downstream wind which was carrying some nasty squally showers.

Chris E fishing The Clure

Other than the rain wetting Steve's net, we had nothing to show for our efforts, hopefully the small rise of water has encouraged some 'taking fish'

The river this morning is showing 1" on the gauge, air temp 12 C, water temp 46 F. The wind is now starting to pick up and we are forecast some very strong downstream winds.

8th October 2013

The river remains at summer level, air temp 17C, water temp 47 F.

7th October 2013

2 Today and a Dunking.....

A 5lbs Grilse from The Clure for Chris E who is now being re-called "Bear Grilse", Chris who always seemed to catch Grilse lost his title last season after catching a 15lber.

I don't think he is complaining as that Grilse won the "first fish" pot between the six of them. Chris also lost a fish in The Gooselandale.

Mike H also opened his account with a gleaming 4 1/2lber from The Weaver which spared him 'some' blushes as he managed not once, but twice, to go for a "swim" in The Weaver.

I think his sides are sore from the 'ribbing' he got a lunch time!

7th October 2013

The river is back down to summer level, air temp 20C !!!, water temp 50 F.

It is very clammy, overcast and humid this morning.

When I rang Steve this morning our team of 6 rods were already there and chomping at the bit to get fishing.

5th October 2013

Nothing today...

Things looked really promising this morning with lots of fish showing all over the beat, be we were unable to tempt them to take a fly.

Then after lunch, out came the sun and it was like someone had flicked a switch and we never saw a fish all afternoon.

Hopefully the fish will come to their senses over the Sunday ready for our new team of rods on Monday.

5th October 2013

The river is holding at 3" on the gauge after rising last night, air temp 14 C, water temp 48 F.

One of each...

I went up to the beat today to meet our rods and was greeted with the good news that Greta A had landed a nice 4 1/2lb Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

Greta always manages to winkle a fish out when she is at Upper Caberston

Husband and Wife team Ron & Greta fishing the top of The Clure.

Also opening his account today, Neville C landed a 6lbs Salmon on his "last cast" before lunch in the neck of The Upper Runners, which was landed by his fishing partner Mike C.

Neville & Mike in The Upper Runners

Even better was the fact that the river was slowly but surely starting to rise and a lot of fish are making their presence known.

4th October 2013

The river is showing 3" on the gauge, air temp 18C, water temp 50 F.

Not the rise of water we were hoping for, however it is raining heavily this morning.

Nothing today...

Nothing today other than a couple of trout, they seem to know when the 30th has past!!!

Steve said that even with the rain to the west, so far the river has maybe came up a couple of inches at most.

He also said it has been very warm and muggy.

3rd October 2013

The river is still sitting at below summer level, however it is now starting to rise as we had and are still getting rain to the west of us, air temp is a humid 19 C and the water temp 49 F.

We welcome our of team of 4 rods today and hopefully the rising river will bring good results for them.

2nd October 2013

I went up to the beat yesterday and fished for a couple of hours in the afternoon, I blanked. I should have known better as Steve wasn't fishing, a sure sign the fish are switched off!

The river remains below summer level, air temp 12, water temp 48 F.

The good news is it has started to rain and is forecast to be heavy later on today and tomorrow. YIPPEEE!!!!

1st October 2013

The river remains below summer level, air temp 12 C, water temp 49 F.

31st October 2012

ONE TODAY.

John E managed to add another fish to his account today, a 7 lbs grilse from The Clure.

As predicted with last night's and today's rain, this afternoon the river rose very rapidly and turned a dirty chocolate brown colour, forcing our rods to retire early.

Steve said before the water turned dirty, a very large number of fish were running the beat on the rising water.

31st October 2012

The river is 1' on the gauge this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 7 C.

We had heavy rain last night and more forecast today so we are expecting the river to rise as the day progresses.

30th October 2012

FOUR TODAY.

David S opened his account today with a 11 lber from The Weaver.

John E had a red letter day, catching 3. His first fish, a 16 lber from The Bridge Pool, his second fish, also from The Bridge Pool, 19 lbs, wait it gets better, his third fish, a 28 lber from The Weaver.

This fish took 30 minutes to land and at one point he thought he lost it when his line went slack, he threw his rod down in disgust and his expletives had mother's covering their children's ears in Peebles!!!

Steve picked up John's rod for him and realised the fish was still on and John landed it shortly after.

Also worth a mention is Patrick W who lost what has been described as a very big fish in Shaws.

It was welcome relief for all involved, getting fish on the bank after yesterday's tales of woe.

Well done men.

30th October 2012

The river is 1'2" on the gauge, water temp 44 F, air temp 7 C.

29th October 2012

SALMON 6 - 0 ANGLERS

We lost 6 fish today, John E lost 2 fish in The Bridge Pool, one of them as he was about to net it himself. Patrick W also lost 2 fish, one in The Bishop's and one in The Cauld Hole.

David S and Peter S both lost a fish a piece in The Clure.

Steve will be doing a roaring trade in new hooks and sharpening stones tomorrow.

29th October 2011

The river is 1'8" this morning after Sunday's rain, water temp. 44 F, air temp 5 C.

27th October 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

With half our team of rods leaving early for meetings/flights and we also had bright sunshine and clear water, the odds were against today.

27th October 2012

The river is 11" on the gauge this morning, water temp 41 F, air temp -1 C

26th October 2012

SEA-TROUT AND OUR FIRST SNOWFALL!

Craig P opened his account today with a 3 lbs Sea-Trout from The Bridge Pool.

After catching his first ever Salmon yesterday, Keith B had a brief 'handshake" with a fish in The Cauld Hole.

We started this morning with the air temp at 2 C and it rose to the heady heights of 5 C before plummeting and we got our first snowfall, enough for Steve to make a small snowman on the picnic table beside the Bothy.

Steve said when the temperatures dropped and the snow started it was like someone had flicked a switch and the river died.

At close of play the air temperature was -1 C.

26th October 2012

The river is 1'1" this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 2 C

25th October 2012

THE BISHOP'S CLAIM A VIRGIN.

A big congratulations to Keith B who after 7 years of trying landed his first Salmon, a 7 lber from The Bishop's. Keith said "Thank god for walkie talkies" after using his to contact Steve with the net as his knees were knocking after hooking his first ever fish.

Keith holding his 'Silver Beauty'

Also on the scorecard today was Michael E who caught a 7 lber also from The Bishop's, which Michael returned.

Steve also tells me there are a lot of fish in the beat and the dropping water is holding them up.

25th October 2012

The river is 1'4" this morning, water temp 47 F, air temp 5 C.

We welcome a new team of rods this morning.

24th October 2012

NOT EVEN A PULL.

Not for the want of trying, our team of rods fished hard to the very end with no reward.

To say I'm disappointed for my rods is an understatement, while I can do everything in the way of hospitality and facilities I have no control over the river and the fish that travel in it.

I take comfort in the fact that at the end of their 3days, they shake Steve's hand and say "Thank you, we have had a very enjoyable 3 days, a fish would have been the icing on the cake, but that's fishing, we look forward to next year".

24th October 2012

This river is 1'9" this morning, water temp 46 F, air temp 9 C.

Hopefully the fish will start to be held up on the beat with the dropping water levels.

23rd October 2012

ANOTHER BLANK.

We had 4 fish on today and lost them, on this occasion they were not handshakes but on a good few minutes, That's fishing.

Steve says he has saw more fish today than he has in the last 3 weeks, which is reassuring, hopefully tomorrow we will get one to the net.

23rd October 2012

The river is 2'1" this morning, water temp 46 F, air temp 10 C

22nd October 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

Nothing for the book today other than John C managed a couple of "handshake's" with one fish in the Cauld Hole and the other one in the Bridge Pool.

22nd October 2012

The river is 2'4" this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 3 C

20th October 2012

ANOTHER BLANK.

We really could do with the water levels dropping, the river only dropped an inch all day.

We had a visit today from our Tweed Commission Bailiff, Kenny and he tells us it's the same story all the way down the river.

With no rain forecast for the next few days, fingers crossed that our fortunes change, not just at Upper Caberston but for the whole river.

20th October 2012

The river is 3'4" this morning, water temp 44 F, air temp 7 C

19th October 2012

TALES OF WOE.

The river held at 4'6" for most of the day and did not start dropping until later this afternoon, its was 4' when I left for home this evening. Steve tells me it was 3'10" when he locked up this evening.

Nothing for the book today. Matt C practised involuntary catch and release on two occasions, once this morning in The Clure and again this afternoon in the Bridge Pool.

With no more rain forecast, hopefully tomorrow will bring Matt and his team some good fortune.

19th October 2012

The river is 4'6" and rising this morning as we have had very heavy rain to the West of us throughout the night, water temp 46 F, air temp 9 C.

18th October 2012

ONE SEA-TROUT.

Although the prospects weren't looking good, Steve was keen to get our rods on the water and fishing the bends and margins of the beat and it paid off.

Matt C landed a lovely gleaming 5 lbs Sea-Trout from the Bridge Pool and this afternoon he lost a big fish in The Clure.

At close of play the river had dropped back to 4'4" and more importantly, is clearing nicely.

18th October 2012

The river is 5'10" and falling, water temp 42 F, air temp 4 C.

The river was lapping at the car park (over 7') last night but is dropping, when Steve opened up this morning it was 6' on the gauge and has dropped a couple of inches in a short time.

17th October 2012

TWO MORE.

We started this morning with the river at 2'3" on the gauge and then came the rain!

With the river rising fast and becoming dirty, two of our rods, Nick and Bob decided to call it a day, have an early lunch before the long journey home, before leaving Nick gave Steve one of his Tina's shrimp tubes that he and Bob caught their fish on yesterday.

After lunch, our remaining two rods, Andy and John fished on and as we only had 2 rods on the river, Steve decided after checking with them, to try out his new fast sink 'Moses' line as the river was now 3'3" and rising.

Steve tied on Nick's tube and landed and returned a 5 lbs Grilse from the Bridge Pool.

Steve then had a cast in The Weaver, hooked a fish and then handed his rod to John for him to play and land, the end result, a nice clean 4 lber,

Steve says both fish were hooked right on the edge of the bank.

A message from Steve to Nick, "Please could I have half a dozen Tina's when you are up in November"

The river was up to 4'6 and still rising as Steve locked up but it had stopped raining and hopefully will be fishable for our new team of rods tomorrow.

17th October 2012

The river is 2'3" and dropping at the moment, water temp 42 F air temp 2 C

16th October 2012

TWO TODAY.

Nick E got things under way today, just before lunch and after a change of tactics, Nick landed a lovely fresh 12 lber from The Bridge Pool, his fish still had marks from the sea lice.

After lunch Bob H opened his account with another fresh fish, a 7 lber from The Clure.

These were Nick and Bob's first Upper Caberston fish, and hopefully not their last.

Well done lads.

15th October 2012

The river is 2'2" on the gauge, water temp 46 F, air temp 1 C.

The river is running clear and it is quite foggy this morning.

13th October 2012

THE LEAN STREAK CONTINUES!

Another blank day and not for the want of trying. Steve says "we've never even saw a fish all day". Roll on Monday.

13th October 2012

The river has dropped back to 3'4" this morning, water temp 46 F , air temp 8 C.

The river is a dark tea colour and our rods our out and fishing.

12th October 2012

HIGH WATER AND HIGH JINX.

I went up to the beat to visit our team of rods, two of which, due to other commitments and the river height, had headed home.

When I arrived the river was at 6' 7", but holding steady.

David S( a regular at Upper Caberston) and his good friend Dudley took our 3 beginners, Kevin, John and Nigel down to Kelso to see the Junction Pool before returning back to the beat at lunch time.

During that time Steve tried a bit of "armchair fishing"!!!

After lunch Dudley took Kevin, John and Nigel out for a bit of friendly tuition on fishing with sunk lines in preparation for tomorrow.

When I left the beat, late this afternoon the river had dropped 6" and when I spoke to Steve this evening it had dropped another 7".

We expect the river to be around the 4' mark in the morning and if the colour has cleared, it will be perfectly fishable.

12th October 2012

The river is 6' and rising, dirty brown and has enough timber coming down it to make a log cabin. water temp 46 F air temp 8 C.

Looks like a day to enjoy the hospitality of The Bothy. When I spoke with Steve this morning he has seen fish running on the very edges of the river.

11th October 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

Today we welcomed a new team of rods, three of which are new to the sport and two anglers new to the beat.

We had a brief 'handshake' with a fish in The Clure and lost a fish in The Weaver.

Reassuringly a lot of fish have been showing today and we have had heavy rain this afternoon and the river was starting to rise as the rods left the river this evening.

Hopefully a good omen for tomorrow.

11th October 2012

The river is 10" on the gauge, water temp 46 F and air temp is a tropical 11 C to what we have had the previous 3 days.

10th October 2012

ANOTHER BLANK.

Another day of blazing sun and clear water. In fact it's the first time that we have had 3 days of consecutive sunshine since June

We are expecting a change of fortunes with the forthcoming change of weather..

10th October 2012

The river is 11" on the gauge, water temp 42 F, air temp -3 C

We have a hard frost again this morning which has caused problems for Steve with a lot of locks being frozen.

9th October 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

The bright sunshine spoilt it again today. Hopefully we will have some cloud cover tomorrow.

9th October 2012

Back up and running!

The river is 1' on the gauge, water temp 44 F, air temp -2 C

9th October 2012

Apologies in advance in case I am unable to post a report today as I am having BT Infinity installed in the office. Fingers crossed there are no problems.

8th October 2012

ONE TODAY.

We started today with a hard frost and fog and it did not take long to clear as the sun got to work. Unfortunately the sun was today's problem, we had blazing sun all day and crystal clear water, not a good mix, however we did catch a fish, a small grilse for Pearce D from The Gooselandale.

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods, the Day family. Mr. Day has been fishing at Upper Caberston for more than 25 years and each year Mr. Day and his 2 sons, his daughter and their partners enjoy their 3 days with us.

8th October 2012

The river is 1'2", water temp 42 F, air temp -1 C

We have a heavy ground frost this morning, " like a picture postcard" Steve says.

The river is at a perfect height, cooler water to slow the fish up, the only "fly in the ointment" could be bright sunshine.

6th October 2012

TWO TODAY.

Today was a special day for one of our anglers, Chris E, Chris has fished a good few years at Upper Caberston and was affectionately given the nickname of 'Bear Grilse' because he always catches Grilse!

Well today he has been renamed, "Bear Salmon" after catching and returning a 15 lber from The Clure. Well done Chris.

Also on the scorecard today was Ken P, Ken caught his first ever Salmon, last year at Upper Caberston, this year he has caught 3 Salmon in his 3 days. Today Ken caught and returned a 10 1/2 lber also from The Clure. "Quite easy this Salmon fishing lark" he said with a big grin.

For me, this is the perfect 'recipe', a great bunch of lads, having a good laugh at each others expense, catching fish and leaving Upper Caberston at the end of their 3 days with a big grin and even bigger memories. Cheers lads.

6th October 2012

The river is 1'8", water temp 46 F, air temp 9 C.

A lot of fish are now showing in the beat as the falling water height is holding them up.

5th October 2012

ONE TODAY.

One today, a 20 lber for Alex P from The Clure, the fish led Alex a merry dance by heading downstream into the Gooselandale before coming back upstream and holding station in the fast water. Steve said you could hear Alex's knees knocking on the whole beat.

Under Steve's guidance, the fish was safely netted, a solid 20 lb cock fish, coloured with a 3" kype. Safely returned.

Well done Alex.

I visited our team of rods today and they are great fun, lots of leg pulling and banter and are thoroughly enjoying their 3 days.

5th October 2012

The river is 2' and dropping, water temp 46 F, air temp 5 C

We have a light breeze and broken cloud.

4th October 2012

THREE TODAY.

After 6 years of trying at Upper Caberston, Dennis P landed a 13 lber from The Weaver, 13 is obviously not unlucky for Dennis.

As you can see from the photograph Dennis's fish is coloured and we would normally put a fish like this back but unfortunately the fish had damage to its right gill and also a hole around the size of a £1 coin in the right side of the mouth and gill plate, the fish was bleeding badly and the humane thing to do was to kill it.

Ken P also opened his account with a lovely 4 lb Grilse from the Bridge Pool and followed that with a 9 lber from Shaws.

The team are in great spirits and have had Steve in stitches with the banter to each other on the 2 way radios.

I think a few 'wee ones' will be drank tonight.

4th October 2012

The river is 2'3" and dropping, water temp 45 F, air temp 3 C

We have a very light breeze and overcast skies, a good day to be on the river.

3rd October 2012

TWO TODAY.

Steve got things under way whilst showing 2 of our rods the benefits of using fast sinking lines. 3 casts in the Bridge Pool and he landed a small gleaming Grilse.

This afternoon Ron A also landed a gleaming 4 lb. Grilse, also from the Bridge Pool, the only thing missing were the sea lice.

There were a lot of fresh Grilse running the beat, no doubt taking advantage of the water height.

We welcome a full compliment of rods tomorrow who visited the beat this afternoon and are raring to go!

3rd October 2012

The river is 3' and rising, water temp 47 F, air temp. 7.5 C.

Heavy sinkers at the ready!

2nd October 2012

NOTHING TODAY.

I went up to visit our team of rods today, for a change it was raining with intermittent downpours. On a day like this the Bothy comes in to its own, with a roaring fire and endless cups of tea and coffee to wash down lunch.

The team were in good spirits and Mike C lost a fish this morning in The Clure. We saw plenty of fish throughout the beat but didn't connect with any.

2nd October 2012

The river is 2'3" this morning, water temp. 48 F and air temp. 10 C.

The very strong downstream wind has eased to a more manageable level.

1st October 2012

TWO TODAY.

Mike C opened his account with a 14 lber from the Bridge Pool and Neville C caught a 5 lb. Grilse also from the Bridge Pool. Neville also lost a fish in the Bridge Pool and another from the Bishop's Pool.

Not a bad score considering this is there first visit to Upper Caberston and the whole team had to contend with a very strong downstream wind.

1st October 2012

The river is 3' and dropping after rising to 4'6" yesterday afternoon, water temp. 47 F

air temp. 10 C.

We welcome our first anglers of the season this morning

I will post an update this evening on how they are getting on.

31st October 2011

TWO TODAY.

We had 3 rods who had to cancel at the last minute, so not wanting all these fish to go to waste, Steve had a cast and was rewarded with a 12lbs salmon from the Lower Runners.

I also invited James M to have a cast, you may know him better as Jimmy and you often see him riding his bike up and down the beat, he often stops and has a chat with the anglers and also gives Steve a helping hand when we have had a flood.

Jimmy was rewarded with a 16lber from the Bridge Pool and it led him a merry dance, at one stage having almost a hundred yards of backing out and decided to visit Lower Caberston but Jimmy landed this fish and took a well earned sit down.

As it is the 31st October I offered to put the willies up Mrs. Miller, the doctor says I should be able to chew solids again next week!

!!!HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

31st October 2011

The river is sitting at 1'2" and rising and it is mild this morning.

29th October 2011

ONE MORE.

We had one more fish today, a 10lbs Salmon for Brian E from the Bishop's.

I called up to the river today to meet our rods and they all said that they have never seen so many fish in the beat, but couldn't get them to take the fly. This coming from a team of very well experienced salmon anglers with the exception of young Rory E who was still smiling from his two fish haul yesterday. (Photo's below)

29th October 2011

CANCELLATION!!!

I have just received a last minute cancellation for 3 Rods on Mon. 31st Oct. - Wed 2nd Nov. Anyone interested please contact me ASAP.

29th October 2011

The river is sitting at 1'3" on the gauge this morning and is dropping. We have black clouds to the west and rain is forecast but hopefully this won't have an impact on the river until this evening.

28th October 2011

FIVE TODAY.

A great day today, especially for Rory E catching a 15lbs salmon this morning from the Bishop's and then in the afternoon, catching a salmon of 16lbs from the Weavers. All this at the ripe old age of 12 years old. Well done Rory.

Also on the score sheet, Patrick W catching 2 salmon this morning, a 16lber from the Weaver's and a 12lber from the Cauld Hole and last but by no means least, Brian E also caught a 12lb Salmon this morning from the Cauld Hole.

28th October 2011

The river is sitting at 1'6" this morning after rising to 2'4" yesterday. It is a lot cooler this morning.

Apologies as tonight's update will be later than usual as I am travelling back from overseas.

With the power of technology I have, at stage's been sending these reports whilst out at sea and I am looking forward to getting back to the river.

27th October 2011

TWO SEA-TROUT.

With the river slowly rising all day and bright sunshine we managed 2 sea-trout, one 3 1/2lbs for Craig P from the Bridge Pool, the second one 4lbs caught by Steve having a cast at the end of the day, again from the Bridge Pool.

We lost three fish today and the beat is still stuffed with fish and yet again not up for the fly. Steve and our anglers are saying, to see so many fish ranging from grilse to 20lb+ fish, fresh and coloured is exhilarating and frustrating at the same time. We have had this same pattern now for nearly the entire month!

27th October 2011

The river is sitting at 1'10" this morning after rising last night and we have an overcast sky, but still quite mild.

26th October 2011

ONE TODAY.

We had one more today, a 5,1/2lbs grilse for Russell N from the Bridge Pool.

Another day of the beat being stuffed with fish yet refusing to take the fly. I am now hearing from other rods, fishing various beats and it is the same story.

26th October 2011

The river is sitting at 1'4" this morning and is overcast. A perfect day for catching a salmon.

25th October 2011

TWO TODAY.

Communication has been resumed, the river has held at 1'9" all day and John L was rewarded with two fish today, a 10lbs salmon from the Bridge Pool followed by a another salmon of 10lbs from the Gooselandale.

The beat is still stuffed with fish and we have lost a few fish today. If the river drops again overnight, the fish will start to be held up in the beat.

25th October 2011

Due to a technical problem with our telecommunication server I am unable to give you the current river height.

(Steve hasn't turned his bloody phone on!)

24th October 2011

ONE TODAY.

Congratulations to John C on catching his first Tweed salmon weighing 11lbs from the Cauld Hole.

The beat was alive with fish again, one of our rods who has fished at Caberston a few times said he has never seen so many fish in the river.

John L lost a big fish in the Bridge Pool after switching from tubes to small double's.

24th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2' this morning and Steve tells me that he has seen fish showing already.

22nd October 2011

CABERSTON CLAIMS ANOTHER VIRGIN!

With the river only dropping 1" all day and one of our rods leaving early, Steve stepped into the breach and landed 2 fish, one of 10lbs and another 8lbs,both from the Lower Runners.

Then at the very end of the day, with the last of the light, Alistair (full name to follow) landed his first ever salmon weighing 12lbs from the Bridge Pool.

Congratulations Alistair

22nd October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'6" this morning, overcast and black clouds to the west. We really need the water levels to drop and settle.

21st October 2011

NOTHING TODAY.

With the river rising all day to 3' on the gauge our rods fished hard and Steve did his upmost to get our rods into fish but to no avail. This beat is alive with fish and yet again they refuse to take the fly. This is really starting to frustrate Steve as he believes we are using the right lines, flies etc but nothing to show for it and there is no man who know's the beat better than Steve. It's just a simple case of 'that's fishing'.

21st October 2011

The river is at 2'9" and rising and starting to be tinged with colour, it is overcast and we have light rain.

20th October 2011

2 TODAY.

2 fish for the book today, both caught by David H, a 9lbs salmon from the Bishop's this morning and a 12lbs salmon from the Clure this afternoon.

Well done David.

20th October 2011

CANCELLATION.

I have a rod that has unfortunately had to cancel his 3 days for the 24th-26th Oct.2011.

Anyone interested in taking 3 days prime fishing for these dates please book via the website.

20th October 2011

The river is sitting a 2'9" this morning and we have had our first hard frost of the season. Hopefully this will slow the fish down as the water temperature drops.

19th October 2011

1 TODAY.

We had one fish today, a 6lbs grilse caught by John R in the Gooselandale. Our rods didn't arrive on the water until 11am today, maybe we could have caught more.

19th October 2011

The river is sitting at 3'9" this morning with the water having a 'tea' like colour

18th October 2011

WASHED OFF!

The river was un-fishable today, not because of the water height but because it was so very badly coloured, the river was over 5' on the gauge and the beauty of Caberston is that we can still catch fish because of our high water pools and the bends in the river which create area's of slack water for the fish to rest in, but because the water was so dirty there is no chance of the fish seeing the fly.

18th October 2011

The river is sitting a 6' on the gauge and is a very dirty chocolate colour, the river was over the 8' mark last night with the river lapping at the base of the Bothy and has left debris everywhere. Steve will be on clearing up duty after assessing if it safe and worthwhile for our rods to fish.

17th October 2011

ANOTHER FIRST FISH!

Congratulations to Dr. John M after catching his first ever Salmon, weighing 12lbs from the Cauld Hole.

Our team of rods had some horrendous weather conditions, torrential rain, which was sleet or snow on the hills and a downstream wind so strong it was lifting the line from the water! Our rods called it a day a 16:30 with the river rising a foot every 2 hours and turning to the colour of hot chocolate.

17th October 2011

The river is sitting at 1' this morning. The air temperature is cooler at 9 degrees and we have a strong upstream wind.

15th October 2011

FISH SOUP AGAIN!

We were back to the status quo again like we had had on the 1st of the month, the beat being absolutely stuffed with fish but just refusing to take any of our anglers offerings, more frustrating is that the odd fish is being caught above and below us.

15th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2' this morning and Steve has noted a 3 degree drop in water temperature, it is now 45 from 48 yesterday.

14th October 2011

NOTHING TODAY.

Today was one of those frustrating days, lots of fish all over the beat, yet reluctant to take the fly. Our rods fished hard until the last of the daylight.

Hopefully tomorrow will bring better fortunes.

14th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'2" this morning and still has a 'tea' like colour.

13th October 2011

UNLUCKY 13?

A 13lbs Salmon today for our continental cousin Tomas L of Sweden, caught this afternoon from the Bridge pool.

A 13lbs Salmon on the 13th of the month,and it's not a Friday!!

Well Done Tomas.

13th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'5" this morning with a 'tea' like colour.

We are welcoming a new team of rods this morning and I'm saying nothing if the Bishop's claim another virgin!

12th October 2011

ANOTHER VIRGINITY LOST!

After 6 years of trying Christopher D not only caught one fish, but two. A 7lbs grilse and a 10lbs Salmon, both from the Bishop's pool, he also lost another two fish!

Pearce D also added one for the book, a 3lbs Sea-Trout from the Gooselandale. Pearce also lost a good fish from the Gooselandale, the fish stripping so much line it ran down river, over the weir and threw the hook.

Nothing makes a fish bigger than being almost caught.

Well done gentlemen.

12th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'4" this morning but we are expecting it to rise as we have had heavy rain all night and it is still raining this morning.

11th October 2011

2 CAUGHT TODAY.

After practicing involuntary catch and release on 3 occasions this morning, our family of rods scored this afternoon.

Pierce D landed a nice clean 6lbs grilse from the Bridge Pool and David W also caught a 4lbs Sea-Trout from the lower stretch of the Bishop's.

Well Done.

11th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'6", dropping back nearly 1' from yesterday and it still has a 'tea' like colour.

10th October 2011

2 LOST TODAY.

We lost 2 fish this morning from the Bridge Pool and with the river rising and becoming coloured our rods failed to land any fish.

Does anyone know the dance to stop rain?

10th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'8" and is slightly coloured with rain forecast for most of the day. We could really do with the water levels staying settled for a while.

8th October 2011

LOST VIRGINITY.

David S scored again this morning with a 10lb Salmon from the top of Bishops.

Also a first ever Salmon for Ken P, fishing Caberston for the first time and what a way to lose your 'Salmon Virginity' with a 17lb Salmon from the Weavers this afternoon.

Congratulations Ken.

8th October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'1" and dropping on the gauge, but we have dark skies and light rain at the moment and it is forecast more rain today.

7th October 2011

BLANKETY BLANK.

Nothing for the book today, as I posted this morning we had a difficult water height today, but it has dropped back to 2'5" on the gauge and fish are starting the show themselves in the beat. If the water continues to settle overnight prospects should be good for tomorrow.

7th October

The river is sitting at 3' this morning after rising to 4' overnight. We still have the strong downstream wind and it is a lot cooler this morning.

Historically 3' is a difficult water height for us as it allows the fish to run straight through the beat.

6th October 2011

WEATHER FOR DUCKS!

I went up to the beat today to meet with our team of rods at lunchtime. The weather was horrendous, blowing a gale downstream and very heavy rain.

When the weather is like this The Bothy is worth its weight in gold, it raises the spirits when greeted with a roaring fire, hot soup as part of your lunch and bottomless cups of tea and coffee.

After lunch, facing a rising river, more wind and rain our rods returned to the river and David Somers was rewarded with a 10lb salmon from the Gooselandale which he safely returned.

With the river rising to 3'4" on the gauge from 2'4" this morning and beginning to colour our rods succumbed to the call of a hot shower, a 3 course meal and possibly a wee drink.

More settled conditions are forecast for tomorrow.

6th October 2011

River sitting at 2'4" on the gauge, still the very strong downstream wind and a lot cooler this morning.

5th October 2011

5 TODAY.

Ed (the Dig) M started the ball rolling with a 7lb grilse from the Bridge Pool, followed by yours truly with a 12lb Salmon from The Weaver, this was the hardest fighting salmon I have ever caught, taking 15 mins. to land, as you will see from the picture it was not a fresh fish so I can only imagine how it would have fought when just entering the river.

Then just before lunch Ed landed a 18lb Salmon, again from the Bridge Pool. He then scored again after lunch with a 5lb grilse from the lower stretch of Bishops, then he hooked into a very large fish at the top of Bishops, the fish tore him straight down to his backing then unfortunately he suffered a reel jam, which resulted in his main line snapping, bad enough losing a big fish but also your fly line is a real killer.

As our rods packed away Steve decided to have a cast in the top of the Weaver, just below the hut and was rewarded with a 9lb salmon.

All fish were returned, a good day considering we had nearly a gale force downstream wind and on occasions driving rain.

We have a full compliment of rods tomorrow, so I look forward to tomorrows report.

4th October 2011

BANG BANG-COCK.

To say it was an eventful day for one of our rods would be an understatement. Greta A giving herself the fright of her life this morning by accidently setting off her life jacket, embarrassing in it's own right, but more so with an audience watching on from Walkerburn Bridge.

Then after lunch Steve gave Greta a life jacket from our tackle shop, only for her to accidently set this one off as well!!!

But Greta did manage a reprieve, by catching the only fish of the day. After hooking the fish in the Cauld Hole,Greta using our new radios, contacted Steve down at the Bridge Pool, who raced up to net the fish, a 14lb cock fish, which Greta returned.

Well Done Greta.

There are still a lot of fish showing in the beat, one of them estimated at 35-40lb in the Cauld Hole.

4th October 2011

River sitting at 1'10" on the gauge with a strong downstream wind.

3rd October 2011

WET & WINDY.

A blank day today, our rods have had heavy rain and gale force winds to contend with all day, add to this coloured water from Sunday's rise.

Hopefully conditions will improve for tomorrow.

3rd October 2011

The river is sitting at 2'6" on the gauge after rising to 5' on Sunday. We also have a strong blustery wind.

I will post an update again this evening.

1st October 2011

FISH SOUP!!!

The river has held all day at 11" on the gauge, the weather has been overcast but very hot and humid. Our rods had an early start this morning while it was cooler, then returned to the Traquair Arms for breakfast and to watch England v Scotland.

Our rods returned to find the upper pools of the beat absolutely stuffed with fish. John Ayres fishing in the Clure had fish splashing round his feet. Yet takes were very thin on the ground, with a couple of lost fish the team fished hard and Bruce M was rewarded with a fish, and what a fish. A 10lb bar of silver covered with sea lice and must have been in the river less than 24 hours.

It is very perplexing even frustrating to have so many fish in the beat, Matt C described it aptly as 'fish soup' yet not taking the fly. I was chatting with my friend, the owner of my local fishing tackle shop and the fish in the River Tyne are doing exactly the same.

One of the great fishing mysteries that makes salmon fishing so enjoyable.
