News, Events and Information - September

30th September 2023

One today...

A very well received 12lber that put up a good scrap, for Ian H in the Clure.

Neil S made brief contact with a fish in the Bridge Pool, but it didn't stick.

We would have really liked all of the team to have had fish, given the work they put in during the challenging conditions over the past 3 days.

The river has remained steady at the 2' 4" mark all day.

Heavy rain again this afternoon, so all eyes on the gauges for Monday.

30th September 2023

The river is 2' 4" on the gauge, falling and has just a small tinge of colour.

Air Temp is 9°C (48°F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

Still and calm this morning.

29th September 2023

Close, but no Cigar...

Our team had another challenging day on the river, it wasn't enough to have high and coloured water, the also had to cope with a very strong and gusty downstream wind.

Tales of woe for Neil S who had a brief offer this morning, then lost a Sea-Trout in the Cauld Hole.

Ian H had a fish that showed interest, but it didn't connect.

Hopefully better conditions tomorrow.

29th September 2023

After the overnight rain, we've had another rise.

The river is 3' 6" on the gauge, falling and is still carrying some colour.

Air Temp is 12°C (54°) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

We have a very strong downstream wind today, thankfully no rain forecast.

28th September 2023

Nothing today...

Fair play to our 3 rods that fished today, many others would have stayed in the hut.

Nothing for the book, but they have seen fish.

The river has dropped to 3' 10" on the gauge, but is still carrying a lot of colour.

More rain forecast tonight.

27th September 2023

A Sea-Trout...

A very quiet day on the beat catch wise, with the exception of a 2lbs Sea-Trout for Gary K in the Cauld Hole.

We were expecting to see a few fish given the water heights over the past few days.

Strange creatures.

As forecasted, Storm Agnes arrived just after lunch bringing heavy rain and gales.

The river was 1' 11" on the gauge at close of play, but we are expecting the river to rise overnight.

The river is holding steady after yesterdays rain at 2' on the gauge.

Air Temp is 10°C (50°F) and Water Temp is 11°C (52°F)

Overcast with a slight breeze at the moment, but we are bracing ourselves for the arrival of Storm Agnes.

26th September 2023

Nothing today...

The river is at a historically awkward height for us, where the fish can run through the beat unhindered.

We have seen a few more fish today.

The river is still falling and was just above the 2' mark on the gauge.

26th September 2023

Air Temp is 13°C (55°F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

On the up-side, the gauge at Crook Inn is falling.

Ever the pessimist.

Clear blue sky this morning and Steve has a tree lodged in the Cauld Hole to contend with.

20th September 2023

Washed off...

Around mid-morning the river started to rise rapidly. As of 14:30 the river is nearly at the 5' mark on the gauge and is running chocolate brown.

Thankfully, David S managed to land a 6lber in the Bridge Pool before it all went pear shaped.

Heavy drizzle again this morning with a slight NE breeze.

15th September 2023

Nothing today...

Another blank day for our 2 rods. The heavy drizzle turned to heavy rain after lunch and it is still raining, so we are expecting a much needed rise overnight/tomorrow.

Only 1 rod tomorrow, so they have the beat to themselves.

Heavy drizzle this morning with a very slight downstream breeze.

14th September 2023

Nothing today...

No takers today but the boys have seen fish in a few of the pools, so they know they are not fishing blank water.

20th September 2022

Nothing today...

Another blank for our team. Low water, bright sunshine and not a fin to be seen on the beat.

We need more water to encourage the big numbers of fish downstream to join us.

20th September 2022

The river is 6" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 14°C (57°F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

Our team gave it a go this afternoon, but nothing to report.

We could do with some more water in the river.

19th September 2022

To mark the funeral of our late Queen Elizabeth II, our anglers will be stopping fishing mid-morning and will retire to the hut to observe the 2 minutes silence and offer a toast to the Queen.

They will then return to the river mid-afternoon.

The river is 6" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 7°C (45°F) and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

The river is 7" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 7°C (45°F) and Water Temp is 10° (50°F)

Chilly with a clearing sky this morning. Fires on warming the hut.

28th September 2021

Nothing today...

Well, not the report I was expecting to write.

After the first rise of any significance since May, we were very optimistic today and that great leveler called Salmon fishing, proved us wrong.

We have never seen a fin all day. Other than a brief encounter for Ian H in the Cauld Hole and another for Nigel A in the Bishop's, nothing!

Our team tried different tactics all day and were left scratching their heads.

Bugger !!!

28th September 2021

After peaking at around the 3ft mark last night, the river has dropped back to the 1ft mark this morning.

The river is still carrying the silvery grey roadwash colour in the middle but it has cleared from the sides and is fishable.

Air Temp is 9°C (48F) and Water Temp is 10°C (50F)

Broken cloud this morning with a slight downstream breeze and showers forecast.

27th September 2021

Early Bath...

The rain that we have all been praying for, arrived, and in no time, we went from no water, to a rapidly rising river that turned very dirty and unfishable.

Neil S did manage to hook a fish this morning in the Cauld Hole.. but the bugger got off !!!

A rapid rise on the Peebles gauge. The Leithen Water, which is a tributary between us and Peebles is running very high and very dirty and we think that is where a lot of the colour is coming from.

In stark contrast, below is a picture sent in by Andy H, who was fishing with us last week, looking upstream from the Cauld Hole.

Fingers crossed for some of the colour to have cleared ready for tomorrow, as the height is not the issue.

27th September 2021

The river remains below summer level, but it has been raining heavy overnight and the gauges upstream are rising.

Air Temp is 9°C (48F) and Water Temp is 13C (55F)

We have a very strong downstream wind and heavy rain.

Finally we are forecast rain and unsettled weather all week which will give the river some much needed water.

25th September 2021

Another Blank...

Nothing for the catch book today.

We have seen a few fish, but they were obviously old springers as they were very dark and very wise to our teams offerings.

Fingers crossed that the forecasted rain arrives tomorrow.

The river remains below summer level.

Air Temp 14°C (57°F) and Water Temp is 13°C (55F)

The strong winds have eased and it is cloudy this morning but it is clearing and looks like it's going to be a bright sunny day.

24th September 2021

Not a Sniff...

Another blank for us today, the wind also made things more challenging than they already are.

We only saw one fish all day.

24th September 2021

The river remains below summer level.

Air Temp is 16°C (61°) and Water Temp is 13°C (55°F)

23rd September 2021

Tales of Woe...

Rubber Hooks today with our team dropping 3 fish, David S lost 2 of them, one in the Bridge Pool and another in the top of the Runners.

Andy H lost his fish in the bottom of the runners.

On the plus side, they know what tactic works, we just need to land them!!!

23rd September 2021

The river remains below summer level, but has risen around 1" / 2.5cm, after last nights rain.

Air and Water Temp is 12°C (54°C)

It is raining at the moment and is blowing a hoolie, testing casting conditions for our new team this morning.

22nd September 2021

Nothing Today...

Another blank day and other than seeing some residents, nothing for the catch book.

It clouded over this afternoon and we do have some light rain, but it will take a lot more to get the river to a better level.

A new team tomorrow.

22nd September 2021

The river is below summer level.

Air Temp is 14°C (57°F) and Water Temp is 13°C (55°F)

21st September 2021

Nothing Today...

The only thing we caught today was the sun, very low, clear water and bright sunshine are not what we want, but that's what we had.

21st September 2021

The river remains below summer level.

Air and Water Temp is 12°C (54°F)

Clear blue sky and bright sunshine this morning.

Well Done Arnie.

20th September 2021

Away we Go...

We welcome our seasons first group of anglers this morning.

The river height is... NO, (joking aside), it's well below summer level.

Air Temp is 7°C (45°F) and Water Temp is 13°C (55°F)

Grey and overcast this morning.

19th September 2021

Tomorrow we welcome our first anglers of the season.

Like the majority of rivers in Scotland, we have had and continue to have, very low water levels.

The last small rise we had was in early August and prior to that, mid May.

In the current conditions, it will either be a Sunray Shadow on a floating line, a small fly fished sub surface, i.e. size #14, followed by a last resort, a Red Francis fished deep.

Our daily reports start in the morning.

Tight Lines.

30th September 2020

One Today...

Alan H was once again our saviour today, Alan landed a 15lber from the Cauld Hole.

Janice H hooked a fish in the Bridge Pool but it proved to powerful to be controlled and got off.

We end September with 26 Salmon/Grilse and 2 Sea-Trout with only any realistic rod effort in the last 9 days and a couple of single rods fishing earlier in the month.

Both Steve and I are under no illusion we could have had a lot more fish if there had been more angling effort.

Something to think about.....

30th September 2020

The river is 8" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 11°C and Water Temp is 8°C

Cloudy this morning with a brisk downstream wind. Rain is on the horizon and we have reports of it pouring to the West of us in Biggar.

29th September 2020

One Today...

The bright sunshine spoiled things today, the weather was better suited to BBQ than fishing.

The morning session was fishless. It was a relief to finally get some cloud cover and with it came some fish.

Alan H saved us from the blank with an 8lber from the Bridge Pool.

Ian H dropped 2 fish this afternoon, one of them being a lump!!!

One is better than none.

29th September 2020

The river is 9" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 7°C and Water Temp is 8°C

A slight downstream breeze and we have bright sunshine that could spoil things in the low water.

28th September 2020

6 Salmon and 1 Sea-trout...

Not a bad way to start a Monday.

Top rod honours today go to Ian H with 3 fish, a 14lber, a 9lber and a 6lber from the Bridge Pool.

2 Fish for Alan H, a 14lber and a 13lber again from the Bridge Pool.

After celebrating his 80th Birthday yesterday, David H landed a 10lber in the Clure followed by a 5lbs Sea-Trout.

All of the fish were caught in the morning session, this afternoon it all went quiet.

I have the catch records dating back to 2001 and with the addition of our catches today, it has been the most successful September on record.

Well Done everyone.

Nothing Today...

After a cold start this morning followed by a wet afternoon, our 2 rods blanked today.

Looking at the catches downstream, the temperature change seems to have done the fishing good.

Roll on tomorrow.

24th September 2020

The river is 10" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 3°C and Water Temp is 9°C

One Today...

The wind made things hard today but we still added a fish to the catch book.

Arnie S has found his favourite spot in the Bridge Pool which gave him a 7lber which had the colouring of a spring fish and was returned.

River fish of various colours sploshing about in a couple of the pools.

We could do with a lift of water to move them on.

22nd October 2020

The river is 10" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 13°C and Water Temp is 13°C

We have a strong, gusty downstream wind to contend with, on the upside it is cloudy and overcast.

21st October 2020

Tales of Woe...

We managed to lose 2 fish today, Arnie S and George W losing a fish each in the Bridge Pool.

To add insult to injury, George got the 2020 Caberston Swimming Gala underway with an up to the neck dip!!!

With the conditions more suited to BBQ's than fishing, they did well to hook a couple.

The Lees...

Unfortunately, the hut on The Lees beat was broken into on the evening of Saturday 19th September.

All of the fishing tackle belonging to boatmen Malcolm and Paul has been stolen. Rods, Reels, Lines, Waders, Wading Jackets and Lifejackets and boxes containing 100's of flies.

If you are offered any tackle, on "the cheap" namely Hardy Bougle and Cascapedia reels, Hardy 13' 6" Sintrex and 15' Swift rods. A Mackenzie 15' rod and waders, jackets etc. please get in touch.

21st September 2020

COVID-19...

A brief insight into what we are doing at Caberston to minimise the risk from Coronavirus.

Each morning, before anglers arrive we spray all areas of the hut with a disinfecting fog.

Before commencing fishing, we check anglers temperatures each morning and require them to use the hand sanitiser and wear a face covering.

Along with our normal table and the addition of some folding tables, we can have a socially distanced lunch.

With the addition of a Gazebo, we can also make use of the outside table for tackling up and/or lunch.

We have also added Perspex screens to the Mule for transport to the opposite bank and we have hand sanitiser on board for use after opening field gates.

We are doing everything we can to keep you safe during your visit with us.

Following the "early bird gets the Worm" mantra, Arnie S landed a 13lber in the Bridge Pool at 06:45 this morning!!!

Thanks to Arnie for the Pic.

After that the sun came up, the forecast cloud cover for the afternoon didn't materialize, Arnie was up against in the gin clear water.

16th September 2020

One for the Ghillie...

Whilst waiting for our lone rod to arrive (arrived lunch time) A fish made the mistake of showing itself to Steve on more than one occasion.

3 casts later, Steve landed an 8lber from the Weaver.

Once Alexander D got fishing this afternoon, he hooked a fish in the Cauld Hole and after playing it for a while "the bugger got off"

Alexander is still out fishing so we might have more to report later.

A 5lbs Sea-Trout for Tammy W today before the sun broke through and became Costa del Caberston.

It is the last day of spinning today so it will be interesting to see how it effects the catch numbers for the rest of the river this week.

11th September 2020

2 Yesterday...

Just spoken with Steve this morning and he landed 2 fish yesterday evening.

A 10lber and a 8lber, both from the Bridge Pool.

It's such a shame that no anglers are out fishing not just Caberston, but the upper river in general.

With regular little rises of water over the past few weeks, fish are here, not in great numbers but there are plenty to come !!!

10th September 2020

We have no anglers booked until the later part of the month so until then ...

9th September 2020

One Today...

After a long absence, we welcomed James S back to Caberston and it was great to hear that James landed a 13lber in the Clure.

Back she goes...

Thank you to the passing trout fisherman for his assistance and pictures.

Tales of woe for Alexander D who was snapped by a powerful fish in the Bridge Pool. It's difficult to keep them under control when they move in to the fast water.

9th September 2020

The river is 1' 2" on the gauge.

Air Temp is 16C and Water Temp is 13C

Another bright sunny start with a downstream breeze.

8th September 2020

One Today...

On his first visit to Caberston, Alexander D got off the mark this afternoon with a 10lber from the Bridge Pool.

Long may it continue.

8th September 2020

The river is 1' 1" on the gauge, after rising slightly yesterday.

Air Temp is 18C and Water Temp is 13C

Sun is shining this morning with a downstream breeze.

7th September 2020

One Today...

Another fish for Tammy W today, a 7lbs coloured grilse from the Bridge Pool.

4th September 2020

3 Today...

Whilst busy cutting the hedges around the Bothy, Steve heard Splosh, this caught his attention but continued cutting, not long after Splosh.

That was enough and away with the hedge trimmer and out with the rod.

True to form Steve landed a 8lber and a 10lber, both from the Weaver.

Also getting a bend in his rod was local angler Tammy W with a 8lber from the Clure.

All as clean as a whistle.

Tammy and Steve both saw small pods of fish running hard through the beat.

Fish running and no anglers fishing for them!!!

30th September 2019

3 Today...

Top rod today, numbers wise, goes to Ian H landing a 12lber and a 8lber in the Bridge Pool.

Ian also lost a bigger fish in the tail of the Bridge Pool and was left with a straight hook.

Top rod weight wise was Alan H who landed a 14lber in the Clure.

Alan also lost a strong fish in the Runners, it was on for 10 minutes during which he never seen it....... and then Ping!!!

Lots of plucks and takes today.

30th September 2019

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge.

Air Temp is 6C (43F) and Water Temp is 10C (50F)

Nice and fresh and overcast this morning, fire is on and Steve is waiting for our 3 rods to arrive.

28th September 2019

Nothing Today...

Tales of woe for Andy H as he had 2 offers in the Bridge Pool, but couldn't get them to stick.

The water has been dirty all day but is dropping and clearing. Providing we get no more heavy rain, it should be spot on for Monday.

28th September 2019

Apologies for the delayed report, an IT problem which I thought was sorted, then became unsorted after a software update.

As Steve predicted we had another big rise last night.

At 08:30 this morning the river was 2'10" (86cm) and steady on the gauge but running dirty.

Air Temp is 10C (50F) and Water Temp is 11C (52F)

27th September 2019

2 of One and 1 of Another...

The morning started with a bang for Dudley H who stepped into the Clure, made his first cast and bang fish on....... and fish off.

Second cast, nothing.

Third cast, Bang and Dudley landed a 3lbs Sea-Trout.

Fourth cast, Bang, this time a 4lbs Grilse.

Fifth cast, Bang, fish on....... and fish off.

Not a bad way to start your morning, 5 offers and 2 landed.

Dudley was using a 1" copper tube Posh Tosh with a fast sinking tip and was using what is called the Snow White technique.

In the afternoon and not to be outdone by his fishing partner, David S landed a 7lber in the Bridge Pool.

There has been heavy showers all day so Steve is expecting another rise tonight.

27th September 2019

The river is 2' 3" (69cm) on the gauge after another rise through the night and is coloured.

Air Temp is 8C (46F) and Water temp is 11C (52F)

26th September 2019

Nothing Today...

Nothing for our 2 rods today, we have seen fish but the water started to rise and colour up again, this seemed to put the fish down.

A full team of 6 rods tomorrow.

26th September 2019

The river is 1' 4" (41cm) on the gauge and falling.

Air Temp and Water Temp is 13C (56F)

The water is a light tea colour and Steve has already seen a fish this morning.

Our 2 rods have a lot of water to go at today.

25th September 2019

A Sea-Trout...

Difficult conditions today with the coloured water, but our rods stuck at it using bright flies and as predicted by Steve, the water clarity improved allowing Graham B to land a 5lbs Sea-Trout in the Bridge Pool.

Graham was using a bright Gold Bodied Willie Gunn.

The river is steady at 1' 6" (46cm) and we have seen small groups of fish running through.

A new team tomorrow.

25th September 2019

The river is 1' 8" (51cm) on the gauge and is carrying a lot of colour but is fishable at the sides.

The SEPA gauge at Peebles is falling so Steve expects the colour to clear.

Air Temp 14C (57F) and Water Temp is 13C (56F)

24th September 2019

Update...

2 Sea-Trout have been entered in our catch book. Trout angler Johnny G called into see Steve and declare that whilst fishing in the evening, he landed an 8lbs and 4lbs Sea-Trout in the Clure.

As I was unsure of the protocol regarding this, I have checked the Clerk of the Commission and the Sea-Trout must be declared in our catch records.

Thank you to Johnny G for taking the time to see Steve and declare his catch.

24th September 2019

Nothing Today...

Apologies for no river condition update, Steve's mobile didn't take kindly to being dropped this morning.

We started the day with the river at 9" (23cm) on the gauge.

Air Temp was 13C(56F) and Water Temp was also 13C (56F)

I travelled up to the beat to meet our team and unfortunately, found one of our team suffering with a dose of the "Mexican Two Steps" and was staying close to the hut.

Throughout the day the river has been slowly rising with last nights rain and at close of play the river was 11" (28cm) on the gauge.

Graham B in the Weaver.

Other than seeing a couple of fish, nothing for Steve's catch book.

It is pouring with rain at the close of play, so all eyes on the gauges for tomorrow.

23rd September 2019

Nothing Today...

Bright sunshine and low water are never a good mix.

With rain forecast tonight and for most of the week, it can only get better...

23rd September 2019

Today we welcome our first group of 4 rods for the 2019 season.

The river is 9" (23cm) on the gauge, yesterdays rain hasn't moved the gauges very much but will have freshened the water.

Air Temp is 13C (56F) and Water Temp 14C (57F)

Nice and overcast with a slight SE wind.

11th September 2019

2 Today...

Another fish for Steve with a 8lber from the Cauld Hole, followed by a 5lber for local angler Tommy W in the Clure.

Small pods of Grilse running through and no anglers to fish for them. Sigh!!!

29th September 2018

Nothing Today...

Another day of bright sunshine and a very strong downstream wind making casting difficult.

We only had one rod fishing who stuck it out, but sadly the Salmon gods weren't smiling.

29th September 2018

The river is holding steady at 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water temp is 9C (48F).

Air Temp is 8C (46F). We have bright sunshine and a very gusty downstream wind.

28th September 2018

The one that got away...

Tales of woe for us again with Andy H losing a fish in the Bridge Pool this morning.

The odds were stacked against us with bright sunshine and gin clear water.

Ken F in the Cauld Hole

Alistair M

We though we might be in for a better shout this afternoon when we finally got some cloud cover but it wasn't to be.

We could do with a good lift of water to bring us a more captive audience but as Steve says "That's Fishing"

28th September 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 9C (48F). Air Temp is 3C (37F).

Our first hard frost this morning and a light NW breeze.

27th September 2018

Blankety Blank...

Nothing today for our team of 2 rods other than a couple of greedy trout to keep them on their toes.

Bugger!!!

27th September 2018

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge. Water temp is 12C (54F). Air Temp is 16C (61F)

A very bright, warm sunny morning with a strong downstream wind.

26th September 2018

2 Dropped...

Tales of woe today for John B and Jim F who both lost fish in the Weaver.

The river is slowly rising at the moment.

The good news is that Steve has seen fish in the beat.

26th September 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 11C (52F) and Air Temp is 15C (59F).

We still have a very strong downstream wind and it is raining. Steve has described it as a "filthy morning".

A big shift in water and air temperatures from yesterday.

25th September 2018

Nothing today...

Back up to the beat today to visit our rods and it was very clear on the drive up the strong wind was back.

When I arrived it was disappointing to hear from Steve that no one had even so much of a touch and the wind was making it a challenge to cast.

John B in the Island Pool

As we sat in the hut enjoying lunch and the warmth of the fire, you could hear the wind was getting stronger.

Phillip P in the Bridge Pool

Our team fished on in the tiresome wind for no reward, we never saw a fin or tail all day.

Strange creatures those Salmon, strange creatures.

Tomorrow will be better.

25th September 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 7C (45F) and Air Temp is 6C (43F)

Good catches reported in the lower river yesterday.

24th September 2018

A Birthday Present...

Double congratulations to Phillip P today, Phillip celebrated his 65th Birthday and even had a cake at lunchtime.

The icing on the cake was he also landed an 8lber in the Bridge Pool.

He just missed out on the cherry, when he hooked a fish in the Gooselandale and it swam full throttle towards him faster than he could strip the line and the rest is history.

Also opening his account today was John B, John landed a 10lber in the Upper Runners and also had a brief encounter in the Bishops.

Many Happy Returns in more ways than one.

24th September 2018

The river is 1' (30cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 7C (45F). Air Temp is 5C (41F).

A fresh morning with clear skies and bright sunshine.

22nd September 2018

One for the Ghillie...

Steve added one more fish to his catch book, a 9lber in the top of the Bishops.

Steve also lost a fish in the lower section of Bishops along with the Sea-Trout he lost early this morning in the Weaver.

Fish are still thin on the ground at the moment with the odd one here and there. Stark contrast to last year when we had good water levels through August and September.

The river gets its day of rest tomorrow so fingers crossed more fish nudge forward for Monday.

22nd September 2018

The river is 1'3" (38cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 9C (48F) and the Air Temp is 8C (46F)

We have no bookings today so Steve has assembled a small team of 4, including himself.

Steve has already lost a Sea-Trout in the Weaver!!!

21st September 2018

A Sea-Trout...

Back up to the beat to visit our team and the first thing you noticed was the wind was a lot cooler than earlier in the week.

The river had also crept up to 1'7" (48cm) and carrying a tinge of colour.

David S

The good news was that Alan H had landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout in The Clure earlier.

Alan H

We were hoping to see some running fish but they don't seem to have got here in numbers just yet.

We could have done with the rain arriving two weeks earlier, we know they are on the way and are close.

As I left for the drive home the river was starting to drop.

Roll on tomorrow.

21st September 2018

The river is 1'4" (41cm) on the gauge and rising. Water Temp is 9C (48F) and

Air Temp is 8C (46F). We also have a very fresh downstream wind.

20th September 2018

Rubber Hooks...

Guess who's back, back again.

Tales of woe for Dunlop Dudley H. Dudley lost a spanking clean fish in the Bishop's this afternoon.

The river is dropping nicely but we really could have done with some of the colour clearing.

Steve has spotted a good few fish running hard through the beat.

Tomorrow will be better.

20th September 2018

The river is 2'2" (66cm) and falling after rising to 4' (1.22m) last night.

Thankfully the colour is fishable this morning. Water Temp is 10C (50F) and Air Temp is 9C (48F). We have a strong downstream breeze but nowhere near as strong as yesterday.

19th September 2018.

Nothing Today...

Well the forecasters got it right for a change and we had very heavy rain all day and gale force winds to contend with, our team stuck it out, but had nothing to show for the efforts.

The river is rising and starting to turn dirty.

Just a Tad Breezy!!!

We are expecting a big rise of water but fingers crossed it will be fishable tomorrow.

19th September 2018

The river is 11" (28cm) on the gauge and rising. Water Temp is 12C (54F) and Air Temp is 13C (55F).

It is raining very hard, Steve was like a "drowned rat" just taking the water temperature. We also have a very strong downstream wind which is forecast to go gale force.

18th September 2018

Nothing Today...

I went up to the beat today to visit our team of rods and the forecasters got it wrong with the rain falling further North. Without the rise of water, fish were very thin on the ground.

Scott L and Ed the Dig

Graham B and George W enjoying the late afternoon sun.

The weather forecast for tonight and tomorrow looks like it could spoil things, although a lift of water will be most welcome.

Once again all eyes on the gauges.

18th September 2018

The river is 10" (25cm) on the gauge. Water Temp is 12C (54F) and Air Temp is 15C (59F).

The river level gauges upstream are starting to show a slight rise. The forecast looks challenging shall we say.

17th September 2018

1 Today...

A most welcome Salmon today for Graham B, not was it only his first fish of the season, it was our first angler caught fish of the season. A 8lber from the Weaver.

Thank you to Graham B for the photograph, the Salmon Gurning competition is on!

Ed the Dig got a brief handshake in the Bridge Pool.

The team has been kept on their toes with lots of plucks from greedy Trout.

All eyes on the weather and river level gauges for tomorrow!

17th September 2018

New Season...

Welcome to the start of our 2018 season.

The river is 11" (28cm) after rising to 1'6" (46cm) yesterday.

Water Temp is 11C (52F) and Air Temp is 10C (50F).

30th September 2017

A Sea-Trout...

Scott H scored again this morning with a 7lbs Sea-Trout from the Clure, tales of woe for the other lads as they dropped 3 fish.

Our season starts in earnest on Monday.

26th September 2017

1 of each...

After another good rise of water on Monday, Frank G was out of the blocks early this morning as the river was clearing and was rewarded with a 7lber from the lower Bishop's.

This afternoon Steve had a cast and landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout from the Bridge Pool.

All returned.

23rd September 2017

A grilse run...

5 for the book today and another 5 lost!!!

Ken P was top rod landing 2, a 6lber and a 7lber, both in the Clure. Scott H landed a 5lber in the Weaver.

Steve took the biggest fish, a 10lber in the Cauld Hole.

Last but not least and a very big congratulations on landing his first ever salmon for Ken W with a 6lber in the Clure.

All returned

A great day lads and good to see the Grilse.

p.s. 2 rods are still fishing, so there may be more news tomorrow.

22nd September 2017

1 Today...

After a good rise on Thursday and the colour clearing on Friday, Tommy W had a cast and caught a 8lber in the Clure.

Ken P also lost a fish in the Weaver.

It's looking good for tomorrow.

16th September 2017

Another 2 ...

Another 2 for Steve's catch book.

A 8lber for Frank G and a 6lber for David D, both from the Clure and both returned.

13th September 2017

On the move...

Another good rise of water got Steve and the boys out fishing. Top rod was Paul L landing a 10lb hen and a 8lbs cock fish, both in the Clure.

Tales of woe for both Steve and Tommy W, they both managed to lose their fish in the Weaver.

Lots of fish running at the moment.

8th September 2017

1 for the book...

With a falling river, Tommy W decided to have a cast this evening and was rewarded with a 8lber from The Weaver which he returned.

Well done Sir.

2nd September 2017

Early arrivals...

After celebrating the 1st Birthday of his granddaughter Ava, Steve and the boys had a cast this afternoon.

Getting things underway, Scott H, who has recently qualified to fish for Scotland landed a 10lber in the Weaver, not bad I hear you say... Scott was using a trout rod with 4lbs line with grubs and nymphs for the trout and grayling!!!

Scott also lost a fish later in the Bridge Pool.

Paul L landed a 8lber in the Island Pool and not to be outdone, Steve also landed a 10lber in The Clure.

All hen fish and all returned.

Well done lads.

30th September 2016

A quick cast...

After finishing off the final preparations for the arrival of our rods on Monday and the river at the perfect height of 1'5" on the gauge, Steve and I decided to have a wonder down to the Bridge Pool for a couple of casts. It would be rude not to....

Me being me, I let Steve go down first (I know a mistake) and sure enough after a handful of casts he was into a fish.

A welcome grisle of 3 lbs, I went down to fish the lower part of the pool and Steve shouts "in again," a nice little Sea-Trout of 2 lbs. Both returned.

I caught zip, Steve 2 - John 0 Grrrrr

28th September 2016

Ready for the start of the season...

As I touched on in our newsletter we have had a busy year in the run up to the start of the season. The winter storms caused some serious damage. Having to clear the 1000's of tons of debris was bad enough but as the river finally started to drop to a normal level in late spring, we could fully see the damage to the riverbanks and pools.

The Bridge Pool.

Major erosion to the right bank, a new island and major gravel deposition on the left bank. This meant that only the upper part of the Bridge Pool was fishable !!!

Well we cant have one of our best pools out of commission, so after a great deal of backwards and forwards with the various different bodies and box tickers, work got under way.

A new 800 ton boulder toe was installed in the riverbed along a length of 180 meters and the riverbank was re-graded to a gentle slope.

We then used the gravel deposited on the left bank as backfill, (we are only allowed to remove 50% of the gravel from the left bank under SEPA rules). This was then covered in top soil after which a geotextile mat is placed over the top soil (what looks like sand in the picture above), the mat is secured with steel pins and another layer of boulders secures it where it meets the river.

Another layer of top soil, which is then grass seeded and a fence erected with a stile at each end and one in the middle.

An improvement is an understatement.

The Cauld Hole.

The Cauld Hole also suffered with major gravel deposition on the left bank, this made not only the top of the pool very narrow, it also changed the flow of the river towards the right bank.

Once again we are bound by SEPA rules and we could only remove 50% of the gravel, even so this was a huge difference as you will see from the pictures below not only the amount we removed but also how the pool is reinstated.

A very busy year and a lot of hard work by Steve has the beat not just back to its best, but even better.

22nd September 2016

One for the book...

Frank G landed and returned a 7lbs Grilse in The Clure. Frank also told Steve that he saw a pod of coloured Grilse running through The Clure on the rising water.

10th September 2016

4 Salmon and 1 Sea-Trout...

After a much welcome rise of water to 4' on the gauge on Friday night, which then dropped back quickly on Saturday Steve and his friends went fishing and were rewarded.

First up is Gary W who landed and returned a 12lber in The Clure. Peter T landed and returned a 11lber in The Bishops and Steve had a good session landing 3 fish, an 11lber in the Lower Runners, a 14lber in the Bridge Pool and a 4lbs Sea-Trout also in The Bridge Pool, all returned.

Good stuff as looking at the Fish Tweed and Tweedbeats websites, only 1 Sea-Trout has be recorded so far.

Well done lads.

Meanwhile on SFF....

30th September 2015

The river is 1" (2.5cm), Air temp is 4C (39F) and the water temp is 10C (50F).

Another cold and foggy morning.

29th September 2015

I went up to the beat today to keep Steve company and do some odd jobs, we need some water!!!

I don't know what was funnier, Steve's face or the trout fisherman in the background who turned around and must have been thinking what the hell is he doing!!!

On a more serious note, as we do sometimes get washed off (hard to believe at the moment), I thought it would be a good idea to offer an alternative to sitting in the hut watching the river.

In the event of a flood we have purchased 6 trout kits so we can offer a day on a local trout stillwater( we are rarely washed off for more than a day), we will supply a day ticket and all the kit, rod, reel, line, tippet and flies etc.

As a salmon angler myself, I have been washed off many times, even in Russia so I thought offering an alternative to sitting twiddling your thumbs is a good idea.

I am just waiting on the delivery of the trout flies and once they arrive I will happily offer this to our anglers faced with the current low water.

29th September 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, Air temp 6C (43F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

Another chilly and foggy morning.

For our rods arriving on Thursday, I would recommend a floating line, a long tippet in the 12lbs range and small flies 14s - 16s.

28th September 2015

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, Air temp is a chilly 4C (39F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

Cold and foggy this morning, we really could do with a rise of water, especially as we have some very big tides this week that potentially could have brought us a fresh run of fish.

It will be interesting to see how the lower beats on the river score.

We have no rods fishing with us over the next 3 days so there will not be an evening report. I will still be updating the river conditions of a morning for our rods coming on Thursday.

26th September 2015

Nothing today...

With the conditions remaining the same as they have been all week, we added nothing to the catch book.

Many thanks to Michael Evans and his two teams that have been with us this week, I know all of them have left with new skills and knowledge.

We have no rods on the beat Mon. - Wed. For our rods fishing Thurs. - Sat, unless the weather changes dramatically over the next few days I would expect us to be using floating lines, slow sink tips and small flies.

Now where did I put that book of rain dances!!!

26th September 2015

The river remains at 2" (5cm) on the gauge, Air temp 10C (50F) and water temp is 11C (52F). It is very overcast with a slight variable breeze.

25th September 2015

Nothing today...

I went up to the beat today to meet Michael and his team of improvers. When I arrived they were on the right bank of The Weavers practicing the snake roll cast of the right shoulder in the blustery downstream wind.

The river is low enough that some of them waded across the river to the bothy for lunch.

After lunch they set off to fish the top of the beat from both sides, however with a low river and bright sunshine the odds were against them.

Nothing for the book today but they are enjoying themselves......... where's the rain when you need it!!!

25th September 2015

The river stubbornly remains at 2" (5cm) despite the rain showers in the West.

Air temp 10C (50F) and water temp is 11C (52F)

24th September 2015

Our first fish of the season...

Congratulations to Lewis T for landing and returning our first fish of the season, from chief bottle washer to salmon catcher extraordinaire!!!

Lewis landed a 6lbs Grilse in The Clure on a baby cascade.

Well done that man.

24th September 2015

The river remains at 2" (5cm) on the gauge, Air temp 9C (48F) and water temp is 10C (50F).

23rd September 2015

Close, but no cigar...

I went up to the beat today to visit Michael and his team. I found them all in good spirits even though we needed some water in the river.

Even more frustrating was that Mother Nature kept teasing us with very dark clouds to the west of us, but when they passed over they produced nothing more than a couple of minutes of light rain.

John, Terry, Jane, Michael and "Geraldine the Salmon"
After Lunch Michael gave Jane and John a short lesson on single handed rods.
Terry fishing Shaw's

Whilst Terry went off fishing under the ever watchful eye of Steve the Ghillie. It was when Terry and Steve moved down to the Bridge Pool that Terry didn't quite get the cigar. Whilst fishing a Collie Dog with a steady stripping action, Terry hooked a fish but after a very brief tussle, it got off.

Tomorrow we welcome Michael's team of improvers with the emphasis more on fishing with some one to one tuition. Hopefully we can land our first fish of the season.

23rd September 2015

The river has dropped back to 2" (5cm) on the gauge, Air temp is 8.5C (47F) and the water remains 11C (52F).

Michael is teaching his group "sinking lines" today, I've told Steve to fill the birdbath!!!

22nd September 2015

Nothing today...

Michael's team were on the right bank today but sadly didn't connect with anything.

Steve says they are seeing fish, mostly coloured but no takers, however the small group are enjoying themselves.

Rome wasn't built in a day.

22nd September 2015

After a small rise last night the river is 4" (10cm) on the gauge, Air temp is 8.5C (47F) and the water temp is 11C (52F).

21st September 2015

A brief encounter of the Bishop's kind...

Nothing for the book today, John H had a brief encounter in The Bishop's. The group have saw both fresh and coloured fish in the beat.

The river is slowly rising so fingers crossed for tomorrow.

21st September 2015

Welcome to our first day of the 2015 season and we once again welcome Michael Evans and his team for a week of Speycasting courses.

We have had light rain all night but the river is yet to show a much needed rise.

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, Air temp 12.5C (54F) and the water temp is 11C (52F).

30th September 2014

And then there was none...

I went up to the beat today and our 2 rods had called it quits and made for home.

The weather was more like July than the end of September. The temperature again rising to 21C (70F). Myself and Steve were in short sleeves.

Steve decided to cut some logs for the fire in preparation for hopefully normal weather returning and I got the tractor out and cut Walkerburn RFC's pitch ready for Saturdays home game.

Before heading for home we decided to check the water temperature, at 15:30 this afternoon, I wish I hadn't, it was 17C (63F)!!!

Who would have thought a fishing report could contain log cutting and grass cutting.

Bloody weather!!!

30th September 2014

The river is down to 1" (2.5cm)on the gauge. Air temp 17C (63F), water temp 14C (57F).

Unbelievable temperatures at 08:20 on the last day of September.

29th September 2014

Sunburn...

Nothing today and the weather could not get any more un-seasonal. It was everyone in short sleeves as the blazing sun took the air temperature to 21C (70F).

Low and warm water with a blazing overhead sun, could the odds get stacked anymore against the chances of catching a fish!!!

The silver lining is that all the forecasts are pointing towards rain by the end of the week.

YIPEEE!!!

29th September 2014

The river remains at 2" (5cm) on the gauge. Air temp 14C (57F), water temp 12C (54F)

We only have 2 rods on the river, so the can enjoy having a bank each to themselves.

27th September 2014

Groundhog day...

The same story again I'm afraid, a low and warm river with salmon not on the take.

Frustrating not just for our teams of rods, but also for Steve and myself.

The end of our first week and I would like to say Thank You to Michael Evans and his two teams of rods. I know you will be all better equipped with your newly learned and improved skills to tackle your next fishing trip in hopefully more favorable conditions.

Thanks again,

John

Now where's my prayer mat and book of rain dances!!!

27th September 2014

The river remains at 2" (5cm). Air temp 14C (57F) and water temp is 12C (54F).

The strong downstream wind that we had yesterday has eased down to a more cast friendly level.

26th September 2014

Nothing today...

I went up to the beat today to meet Michael's team of improvers.

I found them in good spirits even though they were being buffeted by a strong downstream wind, but they had Michael on-hand to improve their casting skills.

The team increased fly size to deter the trout and parr but as like yesterday, they are seeing fish, but non of them wanted to play.

At lunchtime, out of curiosity I took the water temperature and it was an unbelievable 14C (57F)!!!

Absolutely crazy for this time of year.

26th September 2014

The river has shrunk back to 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp is a warm 17C (63F) already. The water temp is 11C (52F).

25th September 2014

Nothing today...

Nothing today for Michael's team of improvers, a few fish have been showing in the pools but are reluctant to take unlike the trout and parr which are giving the team that initial "tug" fix.

It is trying it's hardest to rain at the moment but nowhere near what we need to raise the river levels and cool the water temperature.

25th September 2014

The river has had a small rise to 3 1/2" (9cm) on the gauge, air temp 15C (59F) and the water temp is 9C (49F).

We have a brisk SW wind which is forecast to strengthen.

24th September 2014

A first fish...

Congratulations to Jonathan G on catching not only his first fish, but our first fish of the season.

A Sea-Trout of 1 1/2lbs from The Bridge Pool, which Jonathan returned.

Well done that man.

We have a new team joining us tomorrow for Michael Evans Improvers Spey Casting Course.

24th September 2014

The river is 2" (5cm) on the gauge, air temp 12C (54F), water temp is 10C (50F) and we have a strengthening NW wind.

The team will be learning about sinking lines today from Michael and Steve has offered to fill a tin bath in the car-park for some deep water!!!

23rd September 2014

A mixed bag...

I went up to the beat today and met Michaels Evans team of beginners in high spirits and thoroughly enjoying themselves and the surroundings.

We had none of the rain forecast and the weather can only be described as a balmy 16 degrees with a very slight downstream breeze, perfect for teaching and learning, but not really good for salmon fishing, especially combined with low water.

The team did however manage a mixed bag consisting of 2 salmon parr, 2 trout, a canoeist paddle and a wasp's nest!!! Don't ask.

Oh and Michael's dog Riffle managed a carrion crow

The team will be learning about sinking lines tomorrow, the only problem is finding somewhere with deep enough water.

Don't you just love the weather...

23rd September 2014

The forecast rain has failed to materialise, all we have had was some light drizzle last night.

The river remains a 2" (5cm) on the gauge, the air temp is 12 C (54 F) and the water temp is 10 C (50 F).

I am heading up to the beat this morning to pay everyone a visit and will post an update this evening.

22nd September 2014

Close, but no cigar...

Michael Evans had his team of beginners learning the single spey cast today with floating lines.

One of his team has already mastered the art of "involuntary catch & release,"

Eric L hooked and lost a fish in The Clure, it was tempted by a small cascade double.

Other members of the team were kept on their toes by trout taking their flies.

The team are being spurred on by fish that are showing in various pools.

Rain is forecast for this evening and tomorrow so we are hoping for a welcome rise in water.

22nd September 2014

Away we go...

Our first day of the season and we welcome Michael Evans and his full team of rods on his Basic Spey Casting Course.

Steve tells me the river is sitting at 2" (5 cm) on the gauge, the air temp is 6 C (43 F) and rising, the water temp is 10 C (50 F).

Steve said when he opened up the Bothy this morning the air temp was a chilly 4 C (39 F) but the fire is lit, cups are ready for tea's and coffee's and the biscuits are out and he is looking forward to welcoming everyone.

I will update on their progress this evening...

30th September 2013

One today.

After doing a few jobs today, Steve had a cast in The Bishop's and landed a 6lbs Grilse which he returned, his friend Peter T lost a fish, also in The Bishop's.

30th September 2013

The river remains below summer level, air temp 12 C, water temp 49 F.

We have no rods on the river for the next 3 days so Steve and I will be having a cast in between log cutting etc.

28th September 2013

Nothing today, so far.....

The weather beat us today, we started with misty overcast conditions, which quickly evaporated into blazing sunshine and Steve tells me the temperature got up into the mid 20's!!! Coupled with a now sub summer level river, the odds were certainly stacked against us.

Cecil D received a couple of offers in The Clure and The Bishop's but nothing to show for it.

Some of the team left early for the long drive home but Steve tells me that some are staying on to try after the sun moves off the water.

I will update later this evening if I receive any news.

I think that 7 Salmon & 2 Sea-Trout for a team of beginners and improvers in such low water conditions is pretty fantastic.

Well done men.

Michael Evan's and his Improvers Team.

28th September 2013

The river is now below summer level, air temp 14 C, water temp 48 F. It is very misty this morning with visibility down to 20 yards.

27th September 2013

One of each...

A quieter day today compared to yesterday, however it was another great day for Colin F, after catching his first ever salmon on Tuesday he caught his biggest Sea-Trout to date, a 10lber from The Bridge Pool.

Colin

Later in the afternoon Ken F added to his brace of 16lbs & 13lbs which he caught on Thursday, with a 5lb grilse from The Bishop's.

The weather conditions seemed to be perfect for fishing, it just seems no one told the fish.

David Somers trying to better his 20lber

27th September 2013

The river is now down to 1" on the gauge, air temp 14 C, water temp 49 F. Dull and overcast.

26th September 2013

4 Salmon (including a first fish), a Sea-Trout and 4 lost........

A fantastic result for the team of improvers, the odds appeared to be stacked against them in the form of low water and bright sunshine. However it is a amazing what a bit of cloud cover can do.....

Leading the way with his first ever Salmon was Bob M, a 12lber from The Clure, Bob also lost another 2 in the same pool. Later on he hooked into a very big fish in Shaws, the fish decided it wanted to return to Berwick and stripped his reel of line and backing and then threw the hook!

Cecil D landed a small Sea-Trout and lost a fish in The Weaver.

Ken F stepped into The Clure and was rewarded with 16lber and a 13lber, he also had a brief encounter in The Bishop's.

Ken 1

Ken 2

David S claimed the biggest fish of the day, a 20lber from The Bridge Pool, David joked as he returned his fish that "it was to big to fit in the Porsche to take home"!!!

David

61lbs of Salmon and a Sea-Trout all returned, not a bad at the office

26th September 2013

The river is just under 2" on the gauge, air temp 12 C, water temp. 49 F.

A new team of rods on the river today including some Caberston regulars on Michael Evan's Improvers course.

25th September 2013

Treasure Island...

After a brief encounter in The Clure yesterday, Graham M caught his first ever Scottish salmon this afternoon from the Island Pool, a lovely 10lbs hen which he returned.

Terry T also had a brief encounter this afternoon in The Clure.

I think that 2 salmon landed and a couple of brief encounters is a very good result for 3 beginners fishing in very low water conditions.

We have a full team of 6 rods for the second half of the week taking part in the Improvers Spey-Casting course.

25th September 2013

The river remains stubbornly at 2" on the gauge, air temp. 17 C, water temp. 51 F.

The team sounded in high spirits this morning, no doubt spurred on not only by yesterdays fish, but that a fresh Sea-Trout was splashing about outside The Bothy.

Today is the final day for our team on the basic course and they will be learning about sinking lines. Hopefully more good news to report tonight.

24th September 2013

Fantasy Island!!!

A very special day today for Colin F. Colin was only into his second day on a basic spey-casting course and after learning the mechanics of the double spey this morning, this afternoon he put it into practise and was rewarded with his first ever Salmon.

A 5lber from the Island Pool. A fantastic result which I am sure will be etched into his memory for the rest of his life

I am sure a dram or six will be sank tonight.

Congratulations Colin.

24th September 2013

I went up to the beat yesterday to visit our team and the first thing I noticed was how warm it was, the air temperature was hovering around 18 C.

The team were learning the single spey off the left bank under the watchful eyes of Michael and when they got down to the business of putting into practise what they had learned whilst fishing in the afternoon there were some very respectful casts going out.

They were spurred on even more by the fact fish were showing in various pools of the beat.

Alas Rome wasn't built in a day and no fish were tempted by their efforts.

This morning the river remains at 2" on the gauge, air temp. 16 C, water temp 49 F

23rd September 2013

And so it begins.....

Today we welcome our first team of rods for the 2013 season.

They are led by Michael Evans and are taking part in his 3 day Basic Spey-Casting Course.

The river is showing 2" on the gauge.

18th September 2013

2 More and a Sea-Trout.

A lovely fish this morning for James M, or as he known to Caberston regulars "Old Jimmy". Jimmy often gives Steve a hand around the beat and has fished the river longer than he can remember, we think only God has fished it longer!!!

I quite often give Jimmy the opportunity to have a cast and bless him he can only manage a couple of hours (he is in his late 70's), but that didn't stop him fishing The Bridge Pool at 07:30 this morning!

Jimmy hooked and landed a lovely Salmon of 11lbs and lost another, Steve tells me he is still grinning like a 5 year old.

Steve had a cast this afternoon and was rewarded with a 6lbs Grilse also from The Bridge Pool. He also landed a 3 1/2lbs Sea-Trout off the gravel shelf at the top of The Weavers directly opposite the Bothy.

Steve also lost what he believes to be a big fish in the top of the Upper Runners, he had it on for around 15 minutes and never even saw it, he said it was very powerful, moving back and fourth across the river, taking line as it saw fit, all he could do was hang on until it slipped the hook.

Another one for the "One that got away" memoirs.

16th September 2013

THE FISH HAVE ARRIVED!!!

After a welcome rise of water last week which saw good numbers of fish enter the system, we had another rise of water over the weekend and today after putting the finishes touches to the beat in readiness for the arrival of our first rods next week.

Steve thought he would have a cast in The Bridge Pool, he was rewarded with a 12lbs Salmon which took him 20 mins to land, Steve also landed a 4lbs Sea-Trout, both fish returned.

Not bad for a hour and a half of fishing.

Steve was using and intermediate line with a 5' fast sink tip, the fly was a RS Snaelda as featured in the newsletter.

28th September 2012

UPDATE

Steve decided to have a hour on the Bridge Pool and landed a lovely fresh 8lber.

28th September 2012

WHAT FLOODS?

I went up to the beat yesterday to drop off some parts and see if Steve needed a hand with anything as the river was nearly 7' on two occasions this week.

When I arrived the only signs of any flood where the puddles in the fields, Steve had already cleared all of the debris from the riverbanks. What a man. The river was just under the 4' mark, which would normally be perfectly fishable for us but the water was still dirty.

We are looking forward to the water settling for our first team of anglers arriving on Monday and await to see what 'bounty' Mother Nature has given us as there has only been 2 Grilse, a 9lber and a Sea-Trout reported on Fish Tweed in the last 3 days.

This high water really opens up the prospects for Upper Caberston.

21st September 2012

UP SHE COMES AND SO DO THE FISH!

After finishing his Speycasting course on Wednesday, Michael Evans and Steve the Ghillie decided on Thursday morning to have a cast or two. Michael lost 4 fish and Steve lost one, then the rain came and it rained and it rained some more!

The river peaked at 6'6" leaving debris everywhere including a couple of dead sheep!

Steve began the clear up this morning and was helped by James (Jimmy) Morton and by mid afternoon, with tired backs they decided to down tools and with the river dropping to 3'6" they decided to have a cast. Oh are they glad they did.

Jimmy had a great session landing a 12lbs Salmon, 3 Sea-Trout, 2 Brown Trout and a Grayling!

Steve landed 2 Salmon, 10 and 8lbs respectively and 2 Sea-Trout.

All of the Sea-Trout were in the 4lb range and all fish were returned with the exception of a Sea-Trout that Jimmy took for home for his tea.

(A message for Craig P from Steve, Can you hurry up with the net!!!)

19th September 2012

ONE FOR THE BOOK AND THREE LOST

I went up to the beat yesterday and found our team of rods thoroughly enjoying their beginners Speycasting course.

Neil C lost a good fish on Monday in the Bridge Pool, the fish swam upstream and took advantage of the slack line and threw the hook. Lesson learnt.

On Tuesday we saw a couple of fish but no hook ups.

Today Neil got in the action again, losing 2 fish, one of which frustratingly snapped his leader at the net.

We did however land a fish, a lovely gleaming 9lber for Matthew G, well done that man.

17th September 2012

FIRST CAST

Today we welcome our first rods of the season, who are with Michael Evans taking part in his 3 day Speycasting course.

It may be a baptism of fire as we have a very strong downstream wind, the river itself is showing 11" on the gauge and Steve tells me fish have been showing in the beat, all exciting stuff.

I will be up on the beat tomorrow to visit our team.

10th September 2012

AWAY WE GO!!!

Whilst making last minute preparations on the right bank, Steve spotted fish moving in the beat and promptly downed tools and got a 'my new C-Scrim rod' out.

Within 10 casts he hooked and landed a gleaming 14lb hen from The Bishops, then moved down to The Clure, and 4 casts in, a gleaming 10lb hen.

Then before seeking shelter from the heavy rain, he moved down to The Gooselandale and landed a coloured 4lb Sea-Trout.

Needless to say he is a happy man, as believe or not, it was his first casts of the year.

30th September 2011

SUNSHINE 1 SALMON 0

Today we had the blazing sunshine, resulting in a blank for our team of rods, who after going through the entire fly box decided to enjoy the sun and the surroundings. The most frustrating thing is that the salmon continued to show all over the beat but were not keen on taking the fly.

With rain forecast for tonight and tomorrow maybe the fish will switch on for Saturday.

30th September 2011

The river is showing 11" on the gauge and we have blazing sunshine, fish are still showing all over the beat and I will give another update this evening.

29th September 2011

TARTAN AND SILVER.

With the river sitting at a perfect 1' on the gauge, we welcomed our first group of the season. Fortunately we had cloud cover and were not baked by the unseasonably appearance of the sun. Matt C got things under way with an 8lb salmon from the Clure, then after lunch Bruce M caught a 2lb Sea-Trout, both fish returned.

The beat is stuffed with fish at the moment, with fish splashing around in every single pool, some dressed in full tartan colours and others pure bars of silver. It has been somewhat of a frustrating but enjoyable day, seeing all these fish and losing 3. But as we all know, that's fishing, and tomorrow's another day.

23rd September 2011

2 MORE FROM THE CLURE.

With the river settling back to 1'10" on the gauge,James S, fishing his final day at Caberston was rewarded with an 8lb Salmon from the Clure, Then later in the day a guest of mine,Barry G also caught and returned an 8lb Salmon from the Clure.

It's a shame we have no more rods on the river until this Thursday, especially when we have fish in the beat. I'll just have to force myself to pay a visit on Monday and have a cast.

22nd September 2011

ALIVE WITH FISH!!!

With the river still holding around the 2'6" mark for James S starting his second day on the beat. This morning he lost a very big fish in the Weaver's, then after having one of Sandra's wonderful packed lunches he fished the Clure and was rewarded with a 7lb grilse and lost another couple.

Steve noticed our weather station was showing a rise in pressure so decided to have a cast in the Upper Runners from the far side and was rewarded with a 23lb hen which was returned, a 12lb cock fish, returned, an 8lb sea-trout, returned and a 4lb grilse!!! All fish today were taken on a Collie Dog and Black and Silver patterns. He said the river is alive with fish and they are showing in every single pool on the beat.

Unfortunately I have had 2 rods that have had to cancel on the 3rd-5th October, so if you know anyone looking for rods, please let them know.

21st September 2011

THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY!!!

We welcomed our first rod of the season, James S taking the opportunity of 3 days fishing prior to starting his final year at university.

What a great way to get the mind ready by having the entire beat to yourself.

The river was sitting at 2 foot on the gauge and a strong westerly breeze. There were running fish showing throughout the beat and James connected with a good fish in the Cauld Hole, unfortunately after having the fish on for 10 minutes it managed to slip the hook.

Then the river then came up to 2'6" on the gauge and the wind really began to blow.

Hopefully conditions will settle for tomorrow.

7th September 2011

AND AWAY WE GO!!!

Whilst strimming the grass on the far side, Steve could resist no longer after seeing fish moving in the beat. After rushing back to the hut to get his rod, Steve had a few casts into the tail of the Gooselandale, just above the weir on the right side, and was rewarded with a very clean 10lb hen to a Sunray Shadow. This was the very spot where I caught my 23lber at the end of the 2010 season.

Steve then decided to have a few casts in the Clure with a Willie Gun and was rewarded with a 12lb hen, also a very clean fish.

Both fish returned.

Well done to Steve, I'm going up to the beat tomorrow and may just be tempted to have a chuck.
