Upper Caberston is located in the beautiful upper Tweed Valley in the Borders of Scotland.

The Beat consists of approximately a mile and a third of double bank fishing winding its way from Traquair Water at the upper limit, right down to the Bridge at Walkerburn

The Beat is fished by 6 rods rotating in pairs around the 10 named pools including the (in)famous Cauld Hole where, in the years before the weir was breached, the poachers could snitch salmon out of the salmon ladders using that well known "fly" the Walkerburn Angel.

All the fishing is from either bank or by easy wading with good access. One of the beauties of Upper Caberston is that neither bank is troubled with trees to ‘reach out’ and grab your line.

There are a few spring fish and a summer run of Sea-Trout, the prime Salmon fishing months are late September, October and November when the main run of autumn fish run.

Significantly the beat is often fished at its best when many of the lower beats are washed off. One of Upper Caberston’s unique features is that virtually the whole beat is fishable under quite a wide range of water heights – no water is wasted.

Starting in the 2025 season, our Ghillie is Gary Kennedy.

Gary has fished since the age of 6 years old and was first introduced to salmon fishing with a double handed rod on the lower Tweed aged 16 years old.

Gary has had 20 years of experience as ghillie on the Cleuchhead Beat on the River Annan.

Gary works full time during Sepember and October and part time during to off season keeping the beat immaculately maintained.

Accessing Upper Caberston could not be easier, Upon arrival at our gate, follow our private road which runs parallel with the river to our safe CCTV covered carpark adjoining 'The Bothy'

Upper Caberston is blessed with a delightful bothy constructed from green oak and is fitted with mains hot and cold water and electricity.

It has a fully equipped kitchen with a gas hob, microwave, fridge and a hot water urn.

A fully fitted WC with a toilet and hand wash basin.

A sitting room with a wood burning stove, comfortable seating and a table, allowing you to recharge at lunchtime and to share the day’s highs and lows with the rest of the party over a ‘wee dram’ at the end of the day.

Newly introduced in 2010, is our Kawasaki ‘Mule’ which is used to transport our rods to and from the upper and lower pools on both sides of the river. This not only maximises your fishing time on the river but is also a welcome service to our rods who’s legs are ‘not a young as they used to be’.
